Biografía

Renae Scott Gray was born to Anlizia and Robert Gray on April 19, 1951 in Portsmouth, Virgina. As a child, and after the death of her mother, Renae went to live with her Aunt Elnora Doggett in New Haven, Connecticut. She subsequently returned to Virginia where she graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1969. Shortly after graduation, Renae moved to Key West, Florida where she met and married Edward Scott. From that union, Renae gave birth to her only child, Michele N. Scott. Renae and MIchele had a special relationship that was unique and unlike most mother/daughter relationships; they often joked that God knew what He was doing when He paired them up, and how they were perfect for each other.

In 1973, Renae settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts and called the city home until her death. She lived in many communities in the city but the "Port," where she resided most recently, held a special place in Renae's heart. She was often sighted walking the streets of the "Port" and talking to everyone regardless of age. Her love for Cambridge moved her to run for City Council in 1987 and 1989.

Her life ambition was to be a social worker and her involvement in the community via her work at the Margaret Fuller House, The Cambridge YWCA, The Haymarket People's Fund, Vision Inc., and her service as the Director of The Boston Women's Fund helped to make that goal a reality. So many people were touched by her passion and her commitment to make our world a better place for all people.

Renae was preceded in death by her sisters, Miriam D. Guest and Myra Brown-Hughes as well as her niece, Stephanie Guest. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Michele N. Scott and her brother, Louis A. (Janet) Brown of Dallas, TX. Siblings in love are Haywood Scott of Key West, FL, Alvaris Schott-Gallagher of San Diego, CA, Marilyn Scott-Conrad of Key West, FL, Marjorie (Leroy) Franklin of Los Angeles, CA, Carmena Scott of Key West, FL and their Mother, Delois Scott of Key West, FL and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Renae had a special relationship with her Grand-niece, Syreta Guest, her partner, Eric Scott and their 3 children as well as her God-daughter, Sydaiya Gadson-Williams.

Oftentimes in life there is your job, and your life outside of work. Because of the manner in which Renae saw the world, there two areas blend together. She worked at Haymarket during our early years on staff before going off to start or lead numerous other organizations. What we embrace is her coming full circle in returning to us at Haymarket over the last decade (2007-2017).She was everything to all of us: an advisor, confidant, mediator, friend, facilitator, greeter, and mentor. Each time she entered the office, there was a sense of calm and tranquility. We miss her dearly, and will work to uplift the values she instilled in all of us.

I am so, so sorry for the loss of this beautiful person in your lives. I did not know Renae well, but she had a grace and presence that affected every group and room she was in with a sense of calm, purpose, well-being and warmth. With sadness and warm wishes, Hilary Graham
