From mid-1969 to mid-1972 I was the Officer Commanding the Topographic Squadron of the Army Survey Regiment at Bendigo. Joe was a Corporal in my Squadron who was soon promoted to Sergeant.
I thought very highly of him. He was an excellent technician and a talented leader. A great team man, he was a fine captain of the Regiment cricket team. He played a key role in enabling me to sort out an incident with minimum fuss when two fellow members of the Squadron had to be extracted from the Bendigo Police Station. And how did they get there? Sorry! As another member of the Squadron has aptly said, what happens in the Alexandra Fountain stays in the Alexandra Fountain!
After going our separate ways about half a century ago, it was a real delight to catch up with Joe once again at a Bendigo reunion in 2015.
Above all Joe was a very likeable man and friend to many. I feel privileged to join his many friends – I have recognised many familiar names here – who have already painted such a clear picture of such a fine man.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Joe. Deepest sympathy to Vicki, James and Dan. I'm not sure if there is an afterlife, but if there is, Ian and Joe will be chatting about the good old days at Natmap and putting a couple of dollars on some longshot. RIP Joe. Joy Shiell.

Met Joey on my first day at Nat Map in the early 70's and have been fortunate to call him a good mate ever since. Met Vicky shortly after and it was obvious they were destined to be together, I only wish it could have been for much longer.
So glad we were able spend a couple of days together camped on the Murray.
We have no doubt Dan and James will look after the lovely Miss Vicky.

One of life’s true gentlemen indeed. Was my pleasure to have known and worked with Joe over a good number of years. A lovely man who will be badly and sadly missed by all who have known and loved him.

I joined National Mapping in 1978, hardly could speak English.
Met Vicki and Joe who made me comfortable in that environment of map making (had no idea what I meant to do)
Friendship was and still is genuine with people I truely adore.
Joe was a great friend and gentleman who adored Vicki and his boys Dan and James.
Joe had that whicket humor and will be missed.
RIP dear friend

I worked with Joe in the Survey Corps and National Mapping. What a character, he loved his Rabbitohs, was a good operator in his job, a great sportsman but boy he liked to have a good time. We will miss you mate but keep supporting those Rabbitohs.

I am shocked and deeply saddened at the news of Joe's passing. He was one of the first people I befriended when I arrived at the Regiment back in 1968.
From there on we worked together for many years in Bendigo and at NatMap. He was a good friend, always with a cheeky smile and a loveable personality. A wonderful bloke who I'll miss.
To Vickie and family, please accept my deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences. His passing leaves me with a very heavy heart.

A true gentleman. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe during the 100th Corps Birthday celebrations in Bendigo in 2015, when we all shared a holiday house. Sorry to have not met him earlier or caught up with him since.
