Eileen Branigan Schenk passed away peacefully on Dec. 14, 2020 at home from heart disease. She is loved by many including her family: Jim, her husband of 51 years, her children Megan Fitzpatrick (Matt), Devin Schenk (Jill Korach), her grandchildren Nathan, Laura, Kat, Jonah, and Ada, and her sister Kathy Wohlfrom (Jim). In order to keep everyone safe during the COVID outbreak, the family is celebrating her life in a small ceremony. As a graduate of Seton High School, Mt. Saint Joseph College, and Boston College, she was an incredibly passionate and skillful social worker and community organizer. Eileen and Jim met when she hired him to work at the Catholic Social Service Bureau in 1968. She and Jim started Imago in 1978 an ecological education organization that is rooted in the concept that living in harmony with the natural world. Since then she helped found other community organizations such as Price Hill Will, organize thousands of workshops, conferences, community events, and speaking engagements oriented toward loving the Earth. She was an active participant in her high school “Club” and Price Hill Garden Club. She loved genealogy and Cincinnati.

I was an Americorps volunteer at Imago Earth Center and learned so much about community organizing during my tenure. What Jim & Eileen created is truly inspirational and I feel blessed to have been a part of it even for a brief time. The lessons I learned from the Imago community have stayed with me 20 years later and I continue to share them. Eileen will live on through all of those she inspired.

Eileen was a treasured member of the Price Hill Garden Club, where I thoroughly enjoyed her company on the many club outings. Her wealth of experience and her shrewd perspective engaged us all. We met Eileen (and Jim) in the early 80's when we moved back to Northern Kentucky. We had an affinity right away for them since they worked together as a couple as we did. And we've always known them as a couple - Eileen and Jim - together. Eileen was very different from Jim, but seemed to bring out the best in him. They had a real interdependent relationship, where both made the other a better person. How lucky you have been, Jim, to have shared 51 years with Eileen.

I met Eileen thru Ruth Traut in the 1980's I started going to the First Friday pot luck suppers at Pat Dolan house(because they were free) just bring a dish. I loved the misson of caring for the earth and I joined Imago and became a core member. Eileen always attended all the hundreds of gatherings I went to .She was always warm and welcoming. She kind of stayed in the background were Jim did much of the talking. But Eileen knew how to run a meeting and get us back on track when we veered off on a tangent. She was always so "old shoe" .never formal or stiff.
Very friendly. I haven't been in touch for years
But I cherish those memories.

Eileen was an inspiration to me in our shared field of social work. She is one of the most gutsy and strong women I have known. She was steady, clear, bright and seemed never afraid to speak up. I remember her offering wise and clarifying insights in meetings - always focused on going forward and finding solutions. And, Eileen was easy to be with - always kind, generous and welcoming. I feel so grateful to her and the many ways she influenced my life and the lives of so many.

As one of the "Club Girls", I have been Eileen's friend since High School at Seton, class of 1956, and at the Mount. I echo everyone's praise of Eileen, however, I appreciate her ever more each Spring when I drive down West 8th Street. The street is lined with flowering trees, all due to Eileen's efforts to get the trees and plant them. I will miss her each month at Club, but love her more each Spring. Thank you, Eileen.

I found some nice pictures in my family album, and it made me remember all the pleasant times that I saw aunt Eileen. She was always very kind and supportive to my family. I remember her since I was seven and stayed at her house. Later, in every visit to the family reunion and a couple of times at her home. I admire all the work she did with uncle Jim and the stories she told me, and how she was sincerely interested in your wellbeing; we always felt welcome when we were around her. I remembered in of the last visits, she took us to eat in an Indian restaurant, and we had such a lovely time, and now whenever I go to one, I remember that day. I wish I could have seen her this year too. We will miss her a lot and her conversations and beautiful smile.

I’m so blessed to have known Eileen. I was part of the Imago community for several years and when I lived on Enright I was part of the shared meals commitment where several of us gathered together each night and took turns cooking. So I always felt very welcomed as part of the Imago community. I admired Eileen’s commitment to Imago and to the Earth and she presented a calmness and groundedness that I greatly admired. I feel blessed having known her. My deepest condolences to Jim, Megan and Devin.

I have always admired Eileen and Jim for so courageously giving up their salaried jobs to begin Imago. Even more generously, using their home for its headquarters for a long time. They have been way ahead of most of us in this city in their vision of "how to" live in harmony with nature in the city. They have been effective educators through all of the creative things they have planned. They have had a significant impact on thousands of lives. I am one of them.

I loved Eileen’s passion, practicality, and wit. She had such a big heart. I met her when we were both advocates fir our neighborhoods. I will miss the ever-present twinkle in her eye (and its occasional transformation into a righteous anger).

I met Eileen when I came to work at Imago in 2010. I was drawn to how keen and thoughtful an observer she was - she saw people and delighted in them. She set an example of humor, humility and dedication for us all. Sending all my love and prayers to Jim and the whole family.

My mom wrote a recurring article for the Imago newsletter, that as a kid I didn't understand or just didn't pay attention to. I'm reading them now and just loving her wit, intraspective nature, and deep thought. What a treasure!

Eileen is probably the most admired and accomplished person I've known in my 42 years of living over the ridge from her. She led us through the establishment of Price Hill Will. So kind, so welcoming. Ive loved traipsing Imago all these years. What an example she has set for us all. Thankful to have known her.

Eileen is a Price Hill friend whom I have known close to 30 years. I met her when I started to become more involved in community events and volunteering in Price Hill, and she always inspired me and empowered me to get involved and use my talents. She and Jim supported me when I wrote my first book and sold it on the west side. I am grateful for her leadership and contributions. Since you were Irish , Eileen May God hold you in the palm of His Hand.

I knew Eileen was a firecracker from the moment I first met her and Jim. They welcomed me with open arms, eggs, and bread when I first came to the village 7 years ago with my son. I will miss our porch talks and her remarks as we added more and more children to our family. I will miss her clever jokes. I'm sorry to see you move on.

Eileen and I found during a warm exchange of familial memories that our ancestors came from the same village in the north of Ireland, Irish Catholic and Irish Protestant. We laughed, loving each other and Ireland itself.

I met Eileen as a college student about 16 years ago. I worked on a committee with her for the EarthSpirit Rising Conference. She immediately gave me confidence and a voice in the environmental movement. She was welcoming and appreciated my skills as an artist and teacher. She had this dry humor about her that I found so endearing and I also appreciated her honesty...she would always speak the truth. Over the years she made me feel like a very important member of the Imago community. I'm thrilled that I had the honor of knowing her. We are all beneficiaries of her great work to establish Imago and all the wonderful things it does for our Earth. Her legacy is a powerful one and I will always hold my memories of her close to my heart.
