Donald Joseph Madigan

20 mayo, 1935 - 12 julio, 2020

Someone to listen, someone to cheer, somewhere a shoulder, when shedding a tear, somewhere the kindness, to help us in need, a gem to be treasured, that was Don, indeed! (with thanks from Don's brother Mike)

Biografía

After dancing with Cancer for many years Don peacefully left the dance floor as his loving family and wife of 59 years Stella bid him adieu. Like a comet Don lived fully and vibrantly.

Don was born on the beloved Madigan family homestead on May 20th, 1935 to Gertrude (nee Helferty) and James P. Madigan. It was the height of the depression and black fly season on the rural family farm nestled on the banks of the mighty Madawaska River in Renfrew County, Ontario. They lived in a bustling farmhouse infused with the daily scent of 8 freshly baked loaves of bread cooling on the counter and the sound of a “kittle” crackling on the wood stove. Their home was fuelled with faith, joy and music. Renfrew County held his heart, the Madawaska Valley was his “Home”. He missed it dearly as his life unfolded and drew him to the city. Opportunity and adventure called Don forward at every stage of his life. He began cutting his own trail at just 15 years old, when he left the farm for High School. His big heart, core faith values and grit guaranteed his success. He worked hard towards a tool and die trade on the Avro Arrow Program. In 1954 he transferred from Renfrew to Toronto to fill the need for apprentices. On June 4, 1956, he joined the Metro Toronto Police Service to fulfil his calling to serve the community and protect the less fortunate. Don’s interest in people and his extroverted active, tenacious, work ethic suited the job and propelled his successful 37-year career. “In the folly of youth,” Don was ecstatic to start his career in the motorcycle unit, but after six slushy months he warmly welcomed patrol cars. Don worked in both 14 and 11 Divisions, Headquarters, Fraud, Undercover, Criminal Investigation and Homicide Units. He served 37 years, was seconded to the Criminal Intelligence Services of Ontario and retired as a Detective Sergeant on July 30,1993. Through his work, Don said he met many wonderful people both professionally and personally. He had a great lifelong friendship with Shirley & Kevin (deceased) Boyd and Jean & Chief William (deceased) McCormack.

In 1959 Don was directing traffic at Queen and Yonge, when his beautiful bride-to-be crossed the street. Stella Peplinski, from Renfrew County was also forging a new modern life and career in the big city, training as a nurse. Don said police work brought him the love of his life. Together they raised 4 successful children with their shared core values of work hard, laugh often, and do good. His directions to his children were: “See it coming”, “Be Polite”, and “Lend a helping hand”.

Don was an avid volunteer in his community and mentor to his family. He had a zest for life, and cherished his family, friends and the outdoors. He rarely complained, was fearless and always had places to go, people to see, a job to do, an adventure planned, a chase underway or a party to attend. While raising 4 children with Stella and building a successful career, Don also served on the board of Sancta Maria House, volunteered at his home parish Holy Spirit and, helped his siblings leave the farm and move to the city for better lives in his footsteps. There is no sound as sweet as Don whistling behind the wheel of his vehicle en route to his next adventure. His boundless giving nature explains why, in his scarce free time, Don usually arrived late, but always left them laughing with a twinkle in his eye.

Don joyfully returned to his Renfrew County roots, including music. At 45 years old, he learned to play the violin at night school from the late Graham and Eleanor Townsend. Don was never so vibrant as when he was playing or listening to fiddle music. Upon retirement, he refurbished his mother’s family homestead farmhouse in Palmer Rapids. He joined the Renfrew county fiddlers, the local Lions Club, served as president of Renfrew County Fiddlers and infused his exuberance into supporting the birthplace community of his Irish ancestors.

Don is survived by his 4 children and their spouses: Maureen & Dean Drevniok, Kevin & Debbie Madigan, Robert Madigan & Dr Sue Chappel, and John & Lynn Madigan; his 9 grandchildren: Vanessa Van Decker, Bradley, Michael and Christine Madigan, Joe and Bridget Madigan & Julia Sarah Stone, Julia and John Jr. Madigan, and his 7 siblings: Denis & Carmel (née Peplinski), Vince & Margo (née Donahue), Mary Huene & (late Otto Cohn), Bryan & Jean (née Dwyer), Teresa & Gerald Smith, Jack & Fran (née Dion), Mike & Lynda (née Walsh). Don will be deeply missed by his in-laws: Desmond & (late Loyola née Quinn ) Peplinski, Carmel & Denis Madigan, Mary Anne Peplinski, Dominic and Anna Peplinski, Bernadette and Bill Halkett, Irene and Dick Hill, and daughter inlaw Trish Labuda.

As Don would say, “God Bless You.”

A Celebration of Life will be held in Renfrew County, possibly in November, when we can all meet again.

Don, Stella, and their family are extremely appreciative of the outstanding care, support and compassion received from so many caregivers across our great medical community.  The staff and caregivers of Chartwell Avondale kept COVID-19 out of the facility while keeping the community safe and loved.  Don developed a special relationship with each of his caregivers, who worked with each other to create the best care plan for his continued quality of life.  His favourites being Dr Padriac Ward (Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH)), Dr Nathan Perlis (Urology PMH), Dr Aaron Hansen (Oncology PMH), Dr. Coleman Rotstein (infectious disease oncology University Health Network (UHN)), Dr Kichlu (nephrology UHN), Dr Chow (St Michaels), Dr Hoffman (Ottawa Heart Institute), Dr Anderson and the staff at Temmy Latner Palliative Care.  A special thanks to Dr Rebecca Colman and the team at Bridgepoint Health Care Centre who kept him at peace during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, Don’s family would be honoured with your support of the palliative care music therapy program or the Palmer Rapids Area Lions Club in the honoree name of Don Madigan.  Please direct your memorial donation to the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at www.tlcpc.org with a gift designation to the “Music Therapy Program in memory of Don Madigan - Danny Boy” on the memo line.  If donating by cheque to receive a tax receipt please contact Natalie Rennie, Patient Care Manager, Bridgepoint HealthCare, 416-461-8252 x 2771 or by email [email protected].  If making a donation online the Notification Recipient is: Stella Madigan & Family, 66 Helferty Rd, Palmer Rapids, ON, KOJ 2E0, [email protected].

Never had much luck bumping into you in the early Aurora mornings. Searched the Renfrew back roads for the homestead last year with no success. Sad to know you are no longer meandering about and that goodbyes are left to words. Thank you for all the kind inspiring sentiments of encouragement as a young lad when I lost my father. Thanks for being you! RIP Mr Madigan.

I have been thinking about Don a lot since learning of his passing a few days ago. I remember the first time I met him, on a sunny day in Vancouver. Despite being his son Rob’s first girlfriend since Rob’s separation form His wife, and how hard that must have been for Rob’s parents, Don welcomed me with a generous openness and spirit. Over the next five years, whenever I had the opportunity to see Don and Stella, he was always warm and welcoming, as was Stella, the most generous spirits I met in the family.

Don will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him, for all the fire and passion he brought to life and shared with those around him.

My deepest condolences again.

My brother Don was my guide, my good friend and a good cottage neighbour. He often told me that you can't control the wind, but you can adjust the sails. Some good memories I have of him is him driving me on the cross bar of his bike, my first day to School. Taking me to see the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Maple Leaf Gardens for my first time. Loaning me his Mercedes to go out on one of my first dates. Moving me
from the Farm to Toronto and providing me with food & shelter till I found employment. Helping me pick-out my first VW Beetle, my first Nimrod tent trailer and my first Johnson snowmobile. I will miss his sound advice, his words of wisdom, his back up fiddle and his outdoor sportsmanship. - Brother Bryan

Dear Stella, Maureen, Rob, Kevin, John - and your whole family. It was so sad to hear about Donald. Condolences from me and Laurie. I have such incredible memories of hunting season and Donald is always so prominent in those memories. In my memory, he was always the organizer - both in the camp, and setting up the chases. And he was always the first to greet and welcome visitors to the camp. I fondly remember many chases following behind Donald and the dogs through the hills. I remember him lighting a white birch tree on fire - just to burn off the dangling bark. The whole tree would go up in flames for 10 seconds then the fire would be out! And no harm to the tree! Imagine the awe in a 14-year-old's eyes. And the best memories were those nights when the fiddles and guitars came out - Donald always leading. I always wanted to stay overnight but Dad only let us stay a couple of times. Donald (and all the Madigans) was such a huge part of my childhood growing up in Latchford Bridge. Last summer Laurie and I stopped by the house on a morning bike ride and had a great visit with Donald and with you, Stella. I am soooo glad we stopped for that visit. It's the last time I talked to him. Laurie really enjoyed meeting him (and you too Stella!). All of us in Latchford Bridge will miss this proud Madigan patriarch. Hope to be able to see you all at some point at St. Francis in the near future. Take care.

Dear Stella & family, I was saddened to hear of Donald’s passing, although I knew he had not been well for awhile, but you sure wouldn't know it .. never a complaint from him, always with a smile & a kind word for everyone. Heartfelt condolences from my family to you all. Donald was one of the first people who welcomed me to the community and specifically St Francis de Sales parish in Latchford Bridge, when I moved up from Toronto to help my elderly parents . Knowing how hard it is at times for someone “ from away” , he always went out of his way to speak to me and was particularly kind to me when my mother died. He was always so friendly to my disabled sister and dad whenever we saw he & Stella at church suppers, fiddle events , etc but I realize that he was a man who walked and talked his faith and love towards others. His wonderful obit of his life and tributes, is a real legacy for his family of a life lived so well. I know the Lord is saying to him, “ well done , my good and faithful servant...” Love & prayers, Catherine Baxter

Hello Stella! It has been a few years since we have been in touch, but wanted to reach out with words of sympathy. As you remember, Don gave such wonderful service to Sancta Maria House, and I was lucky enough to serve on the Board with him, in the 80’s! His sparkle and smile, his sincerity and caring were hallmarks of himself. Reading his obituary and tributes brought back many memories of him and the contribution he made to SMH. So be assured of prayers for you and your family as you live with the memories. Most sincerely Mary Ellen Daly-Carey.

It was with profound sadness that I read Don's obituary. I was aware that his days were numbered after receiving a call from him in which he said, "I am on my way out." His last words to me were, of course, "God bless." Because of his faith, I believe Don came to terms with his pending death and was hoping that it would come soon.

Don and I met while working at the College Park Courts and had developed a friendship that spanned over nearly four decades. Although I only met Stella and Maureen, I felt I knew the family as Don often talked about them. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. I had the privilege of spending a day with Don and Stella at their Helferty home and welcomed them to mine.

He was a very dedicated husband, father, grandfather and he cherished his extended family. He will leave a big gap in their lives. Don was also a loyal friend to many. I will always remember him as such.

To you, Stella, and your family I extend my deep and heartfelt sympathy.

What a beautiful tribute to an incredible human being! I first met Don when reporting for The Valley Gazette. What struck me right away was his genuine interest in a person-he took the time to stop and chat and care-a special quality that is often hard to master in this hectic life, yet he did it with ease and flair. May His love and laughter continue to guide and protect all of his grieving family's lonely hearts, the ones I have met and the ones I have not, during your loss on this earthly plane. Xx

Being in Don’s presence made you feel always included, he made sure to speak to everyone in the room at gatherings and made everyone comfortable and at ease. I truly have never met anyone that you could call at any time day or night, or stop in to visit, who would put everything he had personally aside to focus on you and make time Leto chew the fat. He always made time when he had none and always gave me great police advice on the job but also great and inspirational words of wisdom. The last time we talked he told me, “Keep the Faith, Michael”, I will Don, God bless you, and on to bigger things up there.

I remember when I was in highschool I was showing Uncle Don a CD player I bought at a discount electronic store on Young Street. The speaker blew while he was testing it out. Don went with me back to the store in Toronto - I didn't think I would get good help. I don't know what he showed them in his wallet but they gave me a replacement with no hassle. Throughout my young adult years, Don would stop in for a visit and maybe give some feedback to my parents on how I was doing and making sure no one was messing with me. I know he will still be that gaurdian angel from heaven. Love you very much Uncle Don.

Don has been the elder of the Helferty side of the clan for all of our adult lives. He set the bar for the rest of us on many levels; enthusiasm for what others were doing, his adventures spirit never let up, and he never wasting time on unproductive thinking. These were just some of the example he set for us. Those are more than memories, there reminders on how to live a good life as he did.

On a winter day in the beaches, we drove past Kew Park and spotted a man in a red puffy jacket that looked suspiciously like Uncle Don, walking Maureen’s dog Seamus. Rolling down the window, dad called, “Donald!...Donald!...Donald!” To no avail. Fed up with him, mom hung out the window and hollered “UNCLE DOOOOOOON!” His head perked up. “Oh well hello there.” He said. He scooped up Seamus and climbed into the backseat with us. Amidst the catch ups and ‘how are you’s he got distracted: “are those marshmallows?” (Classic Madigan sweet tooth, scoping out the treats) We offered him one. “Oh those are good, I think I’ll have another if you don’t mind”
We love you, our always UNCLE DOOOOOON ❤️

To Stella, Maureen, Kevin, Rob, Johnny and all my extended cousins, my deepest condolences on Don’s passing. This superb obituary sums up his life perfectly. At many family functions, I never saw Don without a smile on his face or that twinkle in his eye. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

Hi there - this is Lorna Helferty Bob’s daughter Teresa Edwards and I wanted to pass along how much I enjoyed knowing cousin Donald. My son Calvin and I had a recent visit to the farm with Donald and he was able to show my son around and tell son stories. Very sorry for your loss, he leaves a big memory for everyone who knew him.

Don was a wonderful brother who took time for everyone which made him late for apointments etc.many times. I enjoyed skidoo trips with him even when he took chances. I didn't care for his pork hocks or under cooked steak but he always insisted I try them which I did. I'd love to share either with him today but can only do it in spirit. He will be remembered fondly by me and my family.
Love always, Teresa

Dear Auntie Stella and Maureen, Kevin, Rob and John and all our relations, our condolences from B.C. Jeff came up for a visit this weekend and we shared our memories of Don. He had a way of making you feel like you were the most important person in his life and gave you 100% of his attention when he was visiting. He always made time to stop in for a visit when we made the long trek home. I really enjoyed this page and all the photos and the milestones. Thanks to all of the family for keeping us informed and connected over the last few months. We're with you in spirit and am sorry to miss the fiddles that will undoubtedly play in memory of Don and his love of music. Love, Nicole

When Don lived across the street from Gerry Yakabuski (deceased 1984) in Renfrew (1956-57) I told him about Stella & Carmel in St. Michael's Nursing (my double cousins) to give them a call if he ever needed a date in Toronto. My late sister Bertille & I loved having a waltz or polka with Don when Stella needed a break from the dance floor. He sure was one of the best dancers in the Ottawa Valley- hope he finds a fiddle in Heaven to play "Little Burnt Potato" for Bertille to step dance to . My request will be "Lake Dore Waltz".. God Bless all of you!

I met Donald when I was about 15, and my parents and I first visited Latchford Bridge. My parents and Donald's mom had been friends for many years, but had not seen each other for 20 some years at that time. I had become Huene's friend by correspondence for about a year before that first visit. Many young men would have ignored their little sister's friend, but Donald always made me feel welcome on my many future visits to the farm. He also became friends with my brother, Martin, who predeceased him.
My sympathies to Stella and family , to his brothers and sisters. He will truly be missed!
God Bless!

John (Jack) Madigan published a tribute .

These are difficult times, but they are softened by some special memories of Don.
Certainly, the Christmas in the early to mid 50’s was a special one, he showed up at the farm with three sleighs, one for Bryan, Mike, and me. I got the biggest one because I was charged with bringing in the wood and water. What they were really the best at was sliding down the Bay Hill. With the logging trucks using it, the tire tracks were just like a skating rink and we felt like we were flying down there.
Another memory was when Don brought home a six-horse Merc outboard and left it in one of the sheds. And just like Don he didn’t lock it up or chain it to a post. No, he encouraged us to use it! And we did. I remember many Sunday afternoons going down the river with Bryan all the way to Snake Rapids. We had never been down the river that far before; with the boat and oars Aumonds Bay was about our limit.
Don had a knack for showing up on special occasions. He came up to go fishing with me when Fran and I lived in Timmins. We went about 20 miles north of the city and launched in the Mattagami River. We caught only one pickerel that evening but with no one else around and no sounds of traffic or city, we felt we could have been on a river near Hudson Bay. We had a great chat!
And he showed up for my retirement in Fort Frances. He was fishing with some buddies up on Mazinaw Lake and happened to mention he was going to my retirement the next day. They asked him where it was and when he told them Fort Francis, they assured him he had to get on the road right away. I felt guilty he had come all that way but really appreciated the effort he had to put into it.
Yes, just when you thought he was down and out, he’d drive in. This past Christmas, I was telling people he was in hospital in Toronto and then he shows up at a Christmas concert the Fiddlers were putting on in Douglas. And towards the end of the program, with the confidence of James P, there he was up on stage with the microphone in hand thanking everyone in the audience for their support and congratulating the fiddlers for their efforts in organizing the event.
He really was a special brother leaving me with special memories!

From our family to the Madigans, our condolences. Don once heard me play Rosebud of Allenvale and always commented when we would chance to chat how much he loved the tune and how I played it. I’m not sure I play it that well but that was his true kindness that went with a big smile.
May his memory be a blessing.
