Souvenirs

A year ago we lost a one of a kind dad, husband, grandfather, economist/teacher, tennis and golf game organizer, lover of gardening, fishing, birding, dogs, and food. He lived his life on his terms making sure he indulged in these passions every day. He proudly beat to his own drum without giving a thought to how others perceived his image. That included chewing on a pipe stem for decades after he stopped smoking to satisfy an oral fixation, doing his "own thing" in a group exercise class, screaming: OUCH! OUCH! in a dentist's chair BEFORE the dentist actually started just to warm up his lungs, bragging about his kids and grandchildren, playing tennis and gardening with his shirt off even in his 80s, just to name a few. Once he had an idea about something he was not open to flexibility, but he didn't mind teasingly being called a dictator because he didn't take himself too seriously and had a playful sense of humor. At the end of the day the very quirks that I rolled my eyes about and protested the loudest are what I agonizingly miss the most. So folks, at the end of the day it doesn't matter if you agree with someone on every issue, what matters is that their love is pure, unconditional and authentic. I knew I was quirky, but I always balked at the idea that I may have inherited this quality from my dad. But today and every day moving forward I celebrate that I am my father's daughter. And I encourage everyone reading this to be their biggest, boldest most authentic, passionate, quirky selves. We live once. Let's do it with passion, love, authenticity, inclusivity and care for others - especially those most vulnerable. Dad, please keep watching over me and our loved ones.

Love, Amy xoxo

Not sure if I can match my siblings wonderful tributes - but I certainly want to chime in with my heartfelt agreement. Mickey's energy and wit and forehand were all admirable. For whatever reason, the little memory that sticks with me most was I think one of the first time we met our new neighbors and he had us in for hand-made sodas - seltzer with flavorings poured in. So exotic to us! And tasty, too. All my best to the family!

I have so many wonderful memories of Mickey as a child, young adult and now as a woman in my 50s. I remember the day Mr and Mrs. Falkson and their wonderful kids, Linda, Amy, and Arthur moved into 503 Salem Drive. Mr. Falkson made us root beer floats and encouraged us to run around in our adjoining backyards.I immediately felt comfortable with this warm, caring, and fun family. Mr. Falkson was not only extremely knowledgeable but also generous with his time. My conversations with him sparked my interest in economics that would eventually lead me into a career in public policy and economic research that I am still enjoying at the US Department of Labor. There are so many other memories that I cherish but I will mention just one more. My father and I were having dinner with Mickey and Ellen Falkson at an Asian restaurant on the Commons, and Mickey suggested some special dishes that were not on the menu. I hesitated as I am not an adventurous diner but decided to be a good sport and take his advice. And of course, he was right! Not only did we have a delicious meal, Mickey also reminded me to be open to new things and to take the time to enjoy them.

Micky and I played tennis together for something like 30 years, over which period we had a lot of fun, yes, playing tennis but also jabbering away at each other. Occasionally, as a great admirer of Shakespeare, I'd try to toss in a pertinent line from the Bard. In due course, big surprise, he wanted to respond in kind. One of his favorites (I find it nifty too) was following a winner that glanced off the line was "A hit, a palpable hit!" Well, why not? Fencing shares some features with tennis.

Yes, Micky Falkson was a dad, husband, grandfather, economist, teacher, tennis, and golf game organizer. He was also the best neighbor Dad EVER. Like my siblings Catherine and Dana, I was very young when I met the Falksons. Perhaps not surprisingly, Mr. Falkson made a big impression on me. He was loud and opinionated, funny, and sweet. He was trustworthy and loyal, and he just adored his kids and his wife. Linda and Amy would roll their eyes whenever he made a dumb joke or would stop to chat with us on his driveway (ah, the many ways Dads can embarrass their daughters...) But even if I rolled my eyes with them a few times, I was just so fond of him and felt he wished me the best. I look back now, wondering how I knew all this as a child. In some ways children are the best judges of character- they can recognize sincerely. Mr. Falkson was exactly who he said he was. Amy, when I read your description of your desire for us all to be our biggest, boldest most authentic, passionate, quirky selves, I felt a wave of nostalgia and peace. That is so your Dad. And it is so you. I aspire for exactly that-- and feel grateful that your Dad's exuberance for life touched mine. Both my mom and dad appreciated you all so much, and if my mom were still with us she would do a beautiful job of appreciating your Dad's life. But we are still here, and while we have our time on this earth, I will always carry happy memories of your Dad with me.

As it is with many of my memories of Ithaca, I remember Micky Falkson from two distinct eras of my life. Some 40(ish) years ago, I was an eight-year-old on a swing set in our back yard on Salem Drive. Our house was bounded by the woods we didn’t play in, the woods we did play in, and the Falkson’s house. As I would play in the back, Mr. Falkson would be in the backyard gardening or watering something. As he did so, he carried on a conversation with Mrs. Falkson, who was inside their house, as though they were in the same room together. So there in the back yard it felt like we were all in the same living room together. And not just because they were carrying on as though we were. It was also because they were always there throughout our childhood – a friendly, reliable, welcoming presence in our lives. In an era before cell phones, having a phone to use when you were locked out or a cup of milk to borrow for hot chocolate on a snow day was an important part of our childhood. And Micky and his family and their living room was always open and available to us. In an entirely different stage of my life, around 20(ish) years ago, I returned to Ithaca to go to law school. At one point or another, my Dad invited me to play tennis at the faculty club with his tennis group, which was run by Mr. Falkson. Yes, he remained Mr. Falkson. I tried “Micky” once at his invitation and it just didn't feel right. He was as he always was – friendly, interested in my new endeavors, welcoming, and also really quite focused on the tennis. I recall him walking to see me warm up before dividing up teams. And of course it was all the more fun because he made it evenly matched. I join my father and all of you in remembering and missing Mr. Falkson. And my father’s tennis game misses him terribly.

It has been only in the last few years that I've been fortunate to play tennis with Micky. Everyone on the clay courts knew Micky by sound. I was delighted when Micky recruited me to play in a doubles game. I was a confirmed singles player, but Micky did not lose patience or lose heart. It was great to be on his team. I felt privileged. I really appreciated his willingness to set up many games. When I saw him on the court, it was nice to hear him say "I'm going to get you in a game." I particularly appreciated his energy and support of the Cascadilla courts. He seemed like the main driver for the CFTC. I do miss him.
