A Watford man to the core — he improved every club he served, and did so with quiet dignity.

Kenneth Francis Jackett — known to everyone in football simply as Kenny — was a Watford man to his very core. Born on 5 January 1962 in Watford, Hertfordshire, he joined his hometown club at age 12, grew up in its colours, and never truly left. The son of Frank Jackett, a professional footballer of Welsh heritage, Kenny inherited both a natural affinity for the game and the quiet determination that would come to define him. As a skilful left-footed defender and midfielder, Jackett spent his entire playing career at Watford, making 428 appearances and scoring 34 goals between 1980 and 1990 — a record that placed him eighth on the club's all-time appearances list. Those were golden years at Vicarage Road. Under the legendary Graham Taylor, Jackett was a driving force as Watford stormed to a second-place finish in the First Division in 1982–83, one of the most remarkable campaigns in the club's history. The following year brought Wembley, where Watford met Everton in the FA Cup final. His 31 caps for Wales, earned through his father's heritage, added an international dimension to a career already rich with achievement. Knee injuries ended his playing days at just 28 in 1990, but Jackett had no intention of walking away from football. He stepped into coaching at Watford, and by 1996 had been appointed manager — the beginning of a managerial odyssey that would stretch across four remarkable decades. From Watford to Swansea City, Millwall, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Rotherham United, Portsmouth, Leyton Orient, and finally Gillingham as director of football, he managed more than 750 EFL games and became the most trusted promotion specialist of his generation. He led Swansea from League Two in 2005, guided Millwall to the Championship via the playoffs in 2010, and delivered Wolverhampton Wanderers the League One title in 2013–14 with a record-breaking 103 points. What set Kenny Jackett apart was not merely the trophies or the points tallies — it was the way he carried himself. He improved every club he served and did so with quiet dignity, a deep care for his players and staff, and an unwavering sense of responsibility to the game itself. He was a mentor to dozens of young footballers, a trusted colleague, and a lifelong friend to those lucky enough to know him. Kenny passed away on 11 June 2026 at the age of 64. He is survived by his wife Samantha and their sons David and Ryan. A Watford lad who lived and breathed football, he leaves a legacy that will echo through every club he graced.

There is a deep and profound sense of loss at the football club following the sad news Kenny Jackett has passed away. Kenny holds legend status here following his remarkable achievements as a player, a coach and a manager, and the club has truly lost one of its own. A local lad who quite simply lived and breathed the Hornets, Jackett was a homegrown star who played an instrumental part in some of our greatest successes.

He was a friend, a teammate, a colleague and a mentor to me and many others. A great loss to all that knew him. 64 is way too young. A true Watford man in all senses of the word. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam, David, Ryan and all of the Jackett family.

You gave me the belief as a young kid with a dream of playing football that I could become anything. That dream became a reality with Watford, from schoolboy to youth team and ultimately becoming my manager in the first team. You even gave me my nickname 'Flash' because I was so quick. Kenny you will always have a place in my heart and forever a legend.

Kenny stands as one of the most respected managers to have plied their trade in the EFL, a hugely capable leader whose work across four decades has left a lasting influence on the many players, coaches and colleagues who benefitted from his guidance. He embodied everything we like to see in a manager — humility, professionalism and a deep care for his players and staff. He improved every club he served and did so with quiet dignity throughout his career.
