Souvenirs

Rachel "Rohini" Mathai passed away on November 7, 2020 at the age of 73. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, physician and Christian. Rohini was born in Kottayam, Kerala, India to Mary "Molly" and Lieutenant Colonel Nellikal Mani Thomas. She loved her parents dearly as well as her three younger brothers: Mani "Babu", Matthew "Acha", and Thomas "Apu"; their wives (Premila, Neena, Cuckoo), their children (Deepa, Roshan, Pramod, Praveen), and her closely knit extended family. Rohini described herself as an "army brat" which allowed her to live in many different parts of India while growing up. In 1964, she began attending CMC Vellore where she met her doting husband, Cyril, and many other beloved lifelong friends. She married Cyril in 1972 after they completed their medical degrees. Soon after, the newlyweds emigrated to Canada with the help of Rohini's dear aunt and uncle, Sarah "Kunjomol" and Abraham "Abby" Vergis to pursue postgraduate training. She completed residency training in Pathology at the University of Ottawa, during which time she gave birth to her two daughters, Anishya and Sonu. Her world revolved around her husband and daughters whom she loved deeply. In 1986, the family moved to the US. After taking a brief professional hiatus while her girls were young, she completed a second residency in Psychiatry at Camarillo State Hospital in southern California. Again, she somehow balanced the demanding schedule of residency with family life, getting her daughters successfully through elementary and middle school during those years. In psychiatry, she found her calling and enjoyed a long career, retiring after 25 years of service to the state of California, working with the disadvantaged prison population. After retirement, she continued to take on short term work assignments of interest alongside her husband, also a psychiatrist; most recently they worked with the Veteran's Administration. In addition, retirement gave her a chance to devote time to her passions: world travel and being a grandmother to her precious Shane and Sarena Rohini, spending most of her time near them in Houston. Despite living the majority of her life in the US and Canada, Rohini remained proudly connected to India and especially her homeland, Kerala. Though her sudden passing left many of her plans unfinished, there is no doubt that she lived an extraordinary life that should be celebrated.

Dear Rohini, I am so sad at your sudden departure. You are beautiful both in and out, affectionate and kind. I was waiting for your phone call that Sunday 2 weeks ago, as you told me so the previous week. You shared anecdotes from College with me, and we had a giggle. Remember, I called you 'Sundari', and we spent good times at the GOTC in June 2016... Despite the years that passed, we met again and picked up where we left off. Cyril, Anisha and Sonu, our heartfelt condolences to you and her grandchildren at this most difficult time. I pray that you will be given comfort and courage. May her soul Rest in Peace. Becky

I remember thinking how beautiful she was when I saw her as a young girl before I joined Vellore I got to know her much better when we were both psychiatrists In California. She was very good at keeping in touch on a regular basis by phone with her friends. In addition she was always informing me and encouraging me to take various steps in my professional career that she had found helpful for herself. I followed eventually some of her advice and they were very helpful to me. I appreciated her concern and kindness towards me over the years.

This tribute is shared by Shanta Joseph (MBBS Batch of 1963) I was quite amused to read Rohini's description of herself as a ‘ military brat!! The Rohini I met in 1964 in CMC, Vellore was anything but a ‘brat!'....... military or civilian! This is the Rohini I knew....... She was very gentle and soft-spoken; no malice in her and I don't recall her ever speaking ill of anyone. She was very graceful and equally gracious. A recurring description of Rohini referred to her incredible physical beauty: yes, she was but I would add that she was MORE BEAUTIFUL. INSIDE than outside...... and that says a lot. She was always very caring and thoughtful, and this was evident in the way she contacted a few of us, her Vellore friends, when her niece, Deepa, was coming to live in England. I regret the fact that I failed to visit Rohini & Cyril in their home in CA when I was there in Jan 2020; Rohini was so magnanimous about it when she phoned, and we had a very nice conversation. My abiding memory of Rohini is in LIQ ( Lady Interns Quarters) in Vellore hospital campus.....Rohini looking very elegant and radiant..... I still can see her looking exquisite in red and black....waiting for her Cyril! I understand that Rohini was drawn to the Catholic Church....... something I can relate to. So I would like to close with this prayer which is part of Requiem Mass: " Eternal rest, grant unto Rohini, O Lord, and may light perpetual shine upon her. May she Rest in Peace, Amen." Rest In Peace...... dear Rohini!
