Souvenirs

One person, if he is big enough, can give a place this feel.

Charles Latham Gaines Jr. was a force of American letters — a novelist, documentarian, adventurer, and teacher whose restless curiosity carried him to five continents and into some of the most unlikely corners of culture. Born on January 6, 1942, in Jacksonville, Florida, he grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where a love of the outdoors and a passion for the written word took hold early and never let go. After studying at Birmingham-Southern College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude, Gaines pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Iowa's legendary workshop, where he studied under Kurt Vonnegut. He emerged from Iowa with a writer's eye for the unexpected and a willingness to follow his subjects wherever they led. His debut novel, Stay Hungry, published in 1972 and set in Birmingham's bodybuilding subculture, became a finalist for the National Book Award and was later adapted into a 1976 film that gave Arnold Schwarzenegger his first major acting role. Two years later, Gaines and photographer George Butler co-authored Pumping Iron: The Art and Sport of Bodybuilding, a book that introduced competitive bodybuilding to mainstream American culture and became a New York Times bestseller. The 1977 documentary that Gaines wrote and narrated deepened that impact still further. Schwarzenegger, who called Gaines "Oak" for the rest of his life, credited him as one of the people who made him who he became. In 1981, Gaines turned a philosophical debate about survival instincts into something altogether new. Together with Hayes Noel and Bob Gurnsey, he organized the world's first formal paintball game in Henniker, New Hampshire, on June 27, giving birth to a sport now played by millions. He was later inducted into the Paintball Hall of Fame and received its Lifetime Achievement Award. Yet if any single thread ran through his life, it was water — specifically, the cold, clear rivers where trout hold in the current. Gaines fished in more than 25 countries and helped found the U.S. Fly Fishing Team. His essay collections The Next Valley Over and Waters Far and Near are widely considered among the finest works of American angling literature. He received the 2026 Heritage Award from the American Museum of Fly Fishing for his lifelong dedication to the sport and its conservation. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Gaines published 25 books and more than 300 magazine articles, earned two Emmy Awards and two Cine Golden Eagle Awards for his television work, was inducted into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame in 2018, and received the Truman Capote Prize for lifetime achievement in literary non-fiction in 2020. He taught for decades as an Associate Professor in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky. Charles Gaines died of natural causes on July 21, 2026, after a short illness, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Patricia Ellisor Gaines; their three children, Latham, Greta, and Shelby; five grandchildren; and his sister, Hansell Burke. He is remembered as a man whose interest in everything was, as those who loved him put it, utterly contagious.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

That's how the book and the movie Pumping Iron launched me into the mainstream - he wrote that book and then worked relentlessly on the documentary and introduced bodybuilding to millions and millions of people. It's how I broke into Hollywood with my first big role in Stay Hungry - a movie Charles also wrote. Most importantly, it's how I became lifelong friends with Charles.

You hear me say it over and over: I'm not a self-made man. Today, I honor the amazing life of one of the people who helped make me who I am.
