Souvenirs

He earned every note of his success.

Calvin Hayes was a British musician whose talent at the keys and behind the drum kit helped define one of the most distinctive sounds of the 1980s synth-pop era. Born on November 27, 1962, in England, he grew up immersed in the music industry — his father was the legendary record producer Mickie Most, founder of RAK Records, who had shaped careers across two decades of British pop. Rather than coasting on that legacy, Calvin set out to build his own name through his own performances. His professional career began in earnest in 1981, when he appeared as drummer and keyboardist on Kim Wilde's self-titled debut album and joined her promotional band on the road. It was a formative chapter that forged lasting friendships and set the stage for what followed. In 1986, Hayes co-founded Johnny Hates Jazz alongside vocalist Clark Datchler and bassist Mike Nocito, a group that had first come together through the Hot Club. The chemistry was immediate and the ambition unmistakable. The band's breakthrough arrived in April 1987 with "Shattered Dreams," a sleek, heartbroken anthem that cracked the Top 10 in several countries and announced Johnny Hates Jazz to the world. Their debut album, Turn Back the Clock, released in 1988, topped the UK charts and produced four consecutive Top 20 singles. Over 1987 and 1988, the band made eight appearances on Top of the Pops — a measure of just how firmly they had captured the public imagination. Then, in late 1988, a near-fatal car crash brought everything to a halt. Hayes endured nearly a year in a body cast and roughly two years of hospitalization, a period of pain and perseverance that few could have weathered. The band released a second album, Tall Stories, in 1991, but the weight of his injuries ultimately led to its dissolution. Through the 1990s and into the early 2000s, Hayes stepped back from public performance. In 2009, the original trio reunited for a celebrated series of nostalgia concerts across Europe and Southeast Asia, giving fans a long-awaited second chance to see the band live. He eventually settled in Spokane, Washington, with his wife Kathy, finding a quieter life far from the stages of his youth. Calvin Hayes passed away on July 10, 2026, at the age of 63, after collapsing at his home. He is remembered as a musician who earned every note of his success.

I've known Calvin since I recorded 'Kids in America', so more than seven years. We got involved at a family party, because Calvin is a good friend of my brother Ricky.
