Joan Wilcox Tidwell did a by great job in her tribute. I will only add the term "Hammond America" was coined by Nita herself. Her disk jockey friends and owners of the local radio station and started using it in their commercials, and other on air descriptions of Hammond. I am happy to say it is still used by the radio station and many of her friends here, her hometown. On her occasional visits to Hammond after adopting Taos as her home, her love for her new home was obvious to everyone who was fortunate enough to see her when she was here. Taos and Hammond have both lost a special person. Please let us here know when the mid summer tribute is scheduled, It would be a great reason to visit Taos. If we can not make the event it would another time to remember Nita.

I'm so sorry to hear of Anita's passing. She and I spent time together when I was doing research for a paper I wrote. For someone who was not raised here, Anita had a love of Taos, and knew so much history about her adopted home, she was phenomenal. She always asked me to bring my little dog with me when I was doing my research, they got along so well. I have lost a good friend and I miss her. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

Nita was the life and soul of Hammond, America. She brought us together with her sharp intelligence, irreverent wit, curiosity, and warmth —all the way from first grade till the shockingly unbelievable day she died. Her maroon car, The Jigger, stuffed with giggling “legal” high school girls inside and giggling illegals in the trunk regularly transported us to the Mitchell Drive In until the night it hit a bump at the pay window, the trunk sprang open and our gig was over. Oh Nita, how much we had of you, how much we laughed and adventured together, and how many memories you left us with. Thank you for every one of them and for a life you made yourself that made so many other lives way better. We will always love you and never forget.
