Krysta Torres

11 de diciembre de 1986 - 19 de septiembre de 2023
Krysta Kurt Torres, a brilliant hacker, musician, and artist, passed away just after midnight on Tuesday the 19th of September 2023 in her own home while peacefully sleeping. She was 36. She had been optimistically dealing with cancer since an initial diagnosis in mid 2020. She made it a point to make the most of however much life she had left; a lesson she tried to share with everyone she spoke with.
Most knew her as Kurt, aka KRT_, Kurt Underscore, Zunesuka, and krt_c0c41n3. Kurt was well known and loved in the hacker community, most notably nyc2600. She was a musician with varied styles from drumming in punk/rock bands as a teenager to making electronic music ranging from synthesizers to gameboys. She was also a visual artist and photographer and even had her photography exhibited in August of 2021 in Barcelona, Spain for The Art of Photography exhibition. Regardless of her medium of art, she was always actively unpretentious; more focused on authenticity than the culture that surrounded it.
She was always creative with a sharp wit, had endless energy, and was always up for any kind of adventure. When hearing some of her adventures, many people thought that they were unreal, only to later realize that if anything she was downplaying them. Anyone that knew her knew that she radiated positivity and that she had a knack for bringing people together and keeping them connected.
She had a varied career with diverse and interesting jobs between working for the United Nations, doing malware remediation for a large hosting provider, to a career in cybersecurity for Memorial Sloan Kettering.
She will be greatly missed. Even though we can no longer create new memories, we will always hold dear the ones that we've made with her in perpetuity.

I met Kurt in 2015; she always inspired me as an artist and human being. Early this year, she told me we needed to do a photo exhibition together, and when I said to her that my photos were not that good, she said "We never know what others would think of our work". I wish we had more time. This inspired me to put a book together with my stuff and I'll dedicate this to her. Thanks for being in my life.

I met Kurt about 2 years ago and am forever grateful our paths crossed. Her energy was unlike anyone I had ever met and we became fast friends. I miss you, homie. Thank you for always being unapologetically yourself.

Happy hippie birthday to my wicked-soul-sister! You would’ve been 37 years young! I’m missing you so, and will be missing you this lifetime. Who would’ve thought that a musician/artist/activist/stage actress/ from Sampaloc, Manila, Philippines would end up in New York City doing stints for UN, being a lowkey hacker, game boy musician, vegan, and so much more! What else did you not do??? I’ll always be grateful for the privilege of having you as my lil sister. We may not be able to talk since 2021 but know that you’ve always been in my heart and prayers. Always as we say it. I love you. I’ll see you next lifetime my dear! PS this picture was taken in 2019. I have older photos of you but this has got to be one of the best cos you’re usually full of creative ideas during brunch and how I adored your animated ways of telling me all of the details! Mahal kita, Kimmie-Krysta-Kurt! <3

With work, we only got to meet once in person. However, we spoke so much online because we were on the same team. She was ready to laugh at my dad jokes, even the bad ones - I could always rely on her to back me up with a good laugh. Any time she reached out (or when I did), she'd start the conversation with something like "Yaaaay"or "Yussssss" She'd tell me of stories of her upbringing and the road that led her New York. I look through her pictures and find comfort in knowing she lived an adventurous life. She'd tell me of her social awkwardness in some situations and I got a good laugh in her attempts to overcome the anxiety from new interactions. Krysta was a gem and I will miss her dearly. Rest In Power Krysta. You were one of a kind
