Recuerdos

I've made many enemies, but I've made a lot of my friends laugh.

Kenneth William Bates was one of the most formidable, colourful, and consequential figures English football has ever produced — a self-made millionaire, fierce competitor, and unflinching survivor whose life story read like something from a novel. Born on 4 December 1931 in Ealing, west London, Ken was dealt a hard hand from the very beginning. His mother died shortly after his birth, his father walked out, and he was raised by his grandparents in a council flat. A club foot requiring multiple operations extinguished any hope of becoming the professional footballer he dreamed of being — but it could not diminish his passion for the game. He built his first fortune through grit and enterprise: haulage, quarrying, ready-mix concrete, dairy farming, and a series of other ventures made him a self-made millionaire long before he entered football administration. His first football posts — chairman of Oldham Athletic from 1965 to 1970, and co-owner of Wigan Athletic from 1980 to 1982 — were apprenticeships for what would come next. In 1982, Bates purchased Chelsea Football Club for just £1, inheriting a club drowning in debt and stranded in the Second Division. Over the next 22 years, he transformed it utterly. Chelsea were promoted to the First Division in 1984, Stamford Bridge was rebuilt and modernised, and a galaxy of international stars — Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli, Gianfranco Zola — arrived in west London. Two FA Cups, the League Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield followed. Perhaps his most enduring act was saving the ground itself: after defeating property developers Marler Estates in court, he created the Chelsea Pitch Owners in 1993 — a supporters-led organisation that placed Stamford Bridge's freehold beyond the reach of developers for ever. In 2003, he sold the club to Roman Abramovich for £140 million, a figure that signalled a new era in world football. Seeking one last challenge, Bates acquired a controlling stake in Leeds United in 2005 — another fallen giant weighed down by debt. His eight years at Elland Road were turbulent and ultimately unsuccessful, though the club survived and returned to the Championship in 2010. Beyond club ownership, Bates played a key role in the formation of the Premier League and served as chairman of Wembley National Stadium Limited from 1997 to 2001. He was never a man to stand on the sidelines. In his final years, Ken retired to Monaco with his wife Suzannah, his companion of 33 years, and their family, where he worked on an autobiography two decades in the making. He died peacefully there on 11 July 2026, aged 94. He leaves behind Suzannah and his five children, and a legacy written in the very fabric of English football.

I worked with Ken on the Wembley Stadium project when he chaired Wembley National Stadium Limited and I was leading the financial arranging team for Chase. Getting involved with football was a new experience for me and negotiating with the FA to commit the marquee matches was challenging. Ken was a delight to work with. He would often call me in the morning to ask me to join him for lunch at the Dorchester where he was meeting a fellow crony, usually another Premier League chairman where gossip would be exchanged. When the FA insisted we went to market to sell the loan despite having no contracts in place, we died the death. Ken later resigned but issued an excoriating letter in his inimitable way. Wembley got built thanks to his vision and is the magnificent stadium we deserve. He was a far sighted man whom I greatly respected.

Ken Bates saved Chelsea. Not only back in 1982 when Bates rescued the club from potential oblivion. But still now, even following the sad news of his passing aged 94, Bates' legacy continues to protect Chelsea. He created the CPO, Chelsea Pitch Owners, which safeguards the future of the stadium.
