Recuerdos

Luke 23:43 “And he said to him, 'Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.'”

Born to immigrant parents who arrived in America separately through Ellis Island, Fiorina Meringolo and Vincenzo Perri found each other through mutual friends. They married and settled in Brooklyn, NY, where they raised their family. Vincent Perri was the fourth of five children, a cherished brother to his four sisters—Angelina, Ernestina, Carmela, and Concetta—who all predeceased him.

Vincent is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Jean; his children Suzanne, Flora, Martin, Patricia, Rene’, Vincent, and Katie; and his beloved grandchildren Gabrielle, Dylan, Alexandria, Eric, Julianna, Vincent, and Joseph.

Jean and Vincent’s love story began across the street in their Brooklyn neighborhood. Jean often spotted Vincent walking with his Navy P-Coat collar turned up, hands in his pockets, head slightly bowed. When greeted, he’d acknowledge with a quiet nod. Jean’s mother once asked why her daughter was so taken with a man who barely noticed her. But on New Year’s Eve, fate intervened when Carmela invited Jean to a party at the Perri home. From that night on, their bond grew, leading to a lifetime of love and partnership.

As a young man, Vincent played stickball and handball in the streets of Brooklyn with neighborhood friends, developing skills, camaraderie, and a love for his community. After graduating high school, he attended automotive trade school and became a master of his craft. He went on to own and operate his own gas and repair station, a testament to his incredible work ethic and skill.

Vincent was drafted into the United States Navy, where he proudly served two years of active duty and two years in the reserves. Stationed aboard the USS Tidewater, a Shenandoah-class destroyer tender ship, he worked as a machinist and earned an honorable discharge in 1962.

Vincent was a quiet yet impactful man, a true gentleman whose love, respect, and kindness were felt by all who knew him. He exuded integrity and fairness, always willing to lend a hand without seeking recognition. Whether fixing a neighbor's leaky pipe, teaching his children how to use tools, or helping a friend in need, Vincent’s generosity left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

At home, Vincent was the ultimate handyman, always ready to take on household repairs, renovations, and building projects. He had a passion for teaching those who asked for guidance, whether about mechanics, carpentry, or life’s many lessons. He had a soft spot for rescuing dogs, who became cherished members of the family, and his heart was as big as his talent for making things whole again.

Music was a lifelong passion for Vincent. His vinyl record collection spanned genres and decades, reflecting his deep appreciation for the arts. He also loved attending Broadway shows, where he soaked in the magic of live performances. Vincent had a love for simple pleasures, like savoring cannoli, ice cream, and candy—treats he enjoyed throughout his remarkable 91 years.

Beyond his talents and passions, Vincent had an impeccable sense of style, always looking dapper with a quick smile that warmed hearts. His kindness was matched by his love for his family, who meant everything to him.

Vincent also loved to whittle, and his family treasures the carvings he gifted them over the years—tangible reminders of his creativity and the care he put into all he did.

Vincent was a remarkable man—fair, unassuming, and gracious. He lived his life with quiet strength, helping others and leaving the world a better place in countless ways. He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Vincent Perri was deeply loved, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who cherished him."

My Uncle Vinnie has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of grace, wisdom, and unwavering devotion. He was a true gentleman and a family man, always ready to offer his knowledge and guidance to those around him. He taught us what it means to be strong—not through loud declarations, but by standing steadfastly beside his wife and family, embodying enduring and quiet love. His children, my dear cousins, are a testament to his values: close, kind-hearted, and deeply rooted in the principles of family that he lived by every day. As his niece, I was profoundly shaped by his example and enriched by his kindness and integrity. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered—a beacon of love and virtue in all our lives.

How do you convey the love and appreciation you have for a father that gave you everything.... far beyond materialistic things. To know my father was to know a man of profound love, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication. He gave me the tools to live a meaningful life, the wisdom to navigate its challenges, and the courage to follow my passions. At 2 years of age, I already shared my father’s love for music. He had an ear for music that evoked deep passion and emotion. The record collection he passed on to me was not just a collection of vinyl—it was a collection of emotions, stories, and lessons. Together, we experienced the magic of Broadway, ballets, concerts, and symphonies. Through these experiences, he taught me to appreciate art, not just as entertainment but as a reflection of the human spirit. It was for this reason alone that I began to sing. As my interests expanded, my father was there to witness every step. Sundays were spent taking me to my riding lesson for many years. He watched intently, encouraging me when I faltered and ready to run into the ring if I was thrown off my horse, which was often in the beginning. His presence gave me the confidence to persevere and get right back on. My father was also my teacher in the practicalities of life. He taught me how to change a tire, check the oil in my car, and listen to the subtle sounds of my car that usually revealed a mechanical issue. He wanted me to be independent and ensure I would never fall victim to a dishonest mechanic. I accompanied my father to work on Saturdays and watched him work on cars. I learned from his example. He didn’t just teach me how to fix things—he taught me how to solve problems, think critically, and take pride in my work. Everything my father worked on at home, I observed and took mental notes. Eventually, I took the hammer into my hand to demo, repair, construct, or redesign each of the apartments and/or houses I have lived in on my own. He always offered constructive criticism with every project I undertook. His creativity and craftsmanship touched every corner of my life. As a 2nd year teacher, I had the wild idea of creating an interactive classroom for my students (long before they were the norm). My father was the one who helped me bring it to life. We worked all weekend building something unique, and when I told him how much my students loved it, he beamed with pride. We shared a love for dogs, meaningful discussions about politics, religion, education, and anything we felt important to share with the other, always looking for a distinct perspective and to find deeper meaning, and an appreciation of films that celebrated resilience and hope. Films such as Patton, Chariots of Fire, Hidden Figures, and HUNDREDS more gave way to lengthy conversations about integrity, honor, courage, and respect not only the characters in the films demonstrated but also people we encountered in our lives with these same characteristics. My father may not have held any higher degrees, but his intelligence was rooted in intuition, practicality, and a natural curiosity that could not be taught. He was analytical yet deeply empathetic, always ready to share a new perspective or find deeper meaning in the world around him. This was his being. To both my parents' credit, they were my first teachers. I have made many mistakes; some I have learned from and others I continue to struggle with. I have made decisions after exhaustive research and others from my heart. Whether these life-changing decisions were good, bad, or indifferent, my father supported me through everyone I made, whether I succeeded or failed. He never judged me for my mistakes but helped me to learn from them. He helped me find my voice because he understood I needed to be heard. My father was a man of integrity, honor, courage, and respect. These were not just words to him; they were the foundation of how he lived his life and how he taught me to live mine. Now, with more years behind me than in front of me, I pray I am able to live a comparable life to his: full, meaningful, and impactful. No one will ever understand the magnitude of loss I feel but I take comfort in knowing his legacy lives on in every lesson he taught me, every value he instilled, and every memory we shared. Daddy, I love you. I will forever be grateful for your love, your guidance, and your belief in me. I pray for peace, forgiveness, and for the restorative love for our Lord to comfort us all. Thank you, with all my heart, thank you. Forever grateful, Patricia

Uncle Vinnie, the best Santa Claus ever! I had no idea you were Santa at Grandma and Grandps’s basement in East Rockaway until many years later. You created one of the best memories of my childhood.
