In Loving Memory of Richard Eric Unis A Life of Adventure, Service, and Laughter

Richard Eric Unis – A Life Well-Lived, a Joke Well-Timed

In Loving Memory of Richard Eric Unis – A Life of Adventure, Service, and Laughter

Richard Eric Unis, 62, completed his final voyage on March 10, 2025, in Key Largo, Florida, doing what he loved—being on the water. While the world has lost a great man, Heaven has undoubtedly gained more humor with Rich’s wit.

Born on June 10, 1962, in Olympia, Washington, Rich’s love of the water was sparked in his early years exploring the Puget Sound. He grew up in Davenport, Washington, where he fished with his grandfather, ran wild with his buddies, and became well-known around town as “Little Richard!”—a name often shouted by his mother as he disappeared, giggling into the next mischievous adventure.

Rich was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force with over 20 years of honorable service as a Contract Specialist and rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His military career led him and his family across the country and world—North Carolina, Nebraska, Colorado, Virginia, the Azores, and a deployment to Iraq. After his retirement from active duty, Rich continued his dedication to public service as a Senior Executive for the Federal Government.

Rich lived a deeply fulfilling life rooted in faith, service, and adventure. A man of faith, Rich was actively involved in church communities throughout his life and especially during his years in Virginia. His love for mentoring was evident in his years spent volunteering with the Big Brother/Little Brother program, where he formed a lasting bond with his “little brother”, Jason Bartelt. He also gave countless evenings and weekends to the Northern Virginia Sail and Power Squadron, helping with vessel safety checks and boating education.

Rich had a curious and joyful spirit that drove him to explore the world. His travels took him hunting and fishing across the U.S., sailing in the Chesapeake and British Virgin Islands, scuba diving in the tropics, and exploring countries across Europe. He also loved watching college football and cheering for his alma mater, University of Texas (even when it tested his faith). If you ever needed a weather report, he was your guy—especially if you were one of his three daughters, Kristina, Hillary, or Hannah, who never had to wonder about the forecast thanks to his enthusiastic updates.

But above all else, Rich was a devoted husband, father, and friend. He shared 38 wonderful years with his wife, Cindy, whom he met through church in Austin, Texas. Cindy was his partner for everything from weekend winery visits to raising three strong, beautiful daughters—his proudest accomplishment.

He had an uncanny ability to lead with kindness, to treat everyone with respect, and to make people laugh with his sharp wit. When taking family pictures, he would famously say, “You only get one shot!”—a phrase that became both a family joke and an unintentional life motto.

Rich is survived by his loving wife Cindy; daughters Kristina (Eric Balcunas), Hillary (Skyler Samp), and Hannah (Luke Farney); his brother Brian Unis; sister Suzy (Paul) Campbell; stepmother Ralphine Unis; nieces and nephews Heather Campbell, and Travis, Stacy, and Brody Geissler; his “little brother” Jason Bartelt; and cherished in-laws LouAnn Russell and Lisa Russell. He was preceded in death by his mother Ellen Harms Geissler, father John Unis, stepfather Echo Geissler, and father-in-law William Russell.

A life as full as his deserves to be remembered with laughter, love, and at least one good story.  Please feel free to post stories and any photos you might have.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation in Rich’s honor to Warrior Sailing—an organization he volunteered with that embodies many of the values he held dear and honors his legacy as a proud Air Force veteran, devoted mentor, and lifelong sailor.

Warrior Sailing empowers wounded, ill, and injured military service members and veterans through the sport of sailing. By offering hands-on training and mentorship, the program helps participants gain confidence, build teamwork skills, and find healing and connection through time on the water. Their mission goes beyond sport—they foster community, resilience, and a renewed sense of purpose for those who have served.

Fair winds and following seas, Rich. You only get one shot—but you certainly made it count.

Celebration of life will take place at 2 pm ET at The Ministry Building of Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Virginia – 541 Tolbert Ln SE, Leesburg, VA 20175. Reception to follow.

So sorry we are only now learning about Rich. Recently something reminded me of him and an internet search led me here. I met Rich while we were both stationed in Northern Virginia. My wife, Margie, and Rich worked on the same team and she introduced me saying Rich is also a University of Texas sports fan. Rich clarified that he is a Texas EX. While I am not a Texas EX I grew up in Austin TX and will always be an avid UT sports fan. It was nice having another UT fan nearby. At my Air Force retirement ceremony (fall 2007) photos from my career were shown. Included was an Austin American Statesman newspaper “military notes” clipping (c.1987-1988 winter). Only then did I realize the clipping also includes Richard E. Unis (uploaded with this post). Margie and I are saddened to learn about Rich. Rich was one of the kindest persons and Margie says he was the best coworker. Our condolences to the Unis family. Margie & Neil Jennings Hook'em!

Wow guess I'm so behind the times. I just looked up Rich on a goggle search wondering where life had taken him and was blown away to find him ,And so saddened with his passing. Rich and I went through basic training together, then were stationed at Lowry A.F.B. for tech school. Rich came to visit and stayed with me for a week in Maine back in 1984. He was a great guy. I'm so pleased to hear he had a full and successful life. R.I.P brother. We'll catch up on the other side.

I moved to Davenport between 4th and 5th grade Summer. Because of our class size, we were split in 2 groups. Richard was in the same grouping as I. He enjoyed himself in and out of class. Valentines Day in sixed grade, we all exchanged cards but Richard gave me an extra gift. A ring. It was Avon with pearls and leafs. (It had a missing pearl or two) We were not a "couple" . Never boyfriend and girlfriend. When he gave it to me, he just said: "you seem to be needing this." He was always a friend, no strings or drama, present in doing school years together. I am pleased to know he has taken ownership of his room in the Kingdom of God. As time moves on, we have lost touch, I did know he was in the Airforce and doing well, but how honoring to the Glory of God that many of the Class of 1980 from Davenport High will have a great reunion in eternity. The best reunion one can attend. May comfort from Holy God surround each of you as you walk on. In His Service, Nancy K (Plumb) Harrison

Skipper Rich was and is my friend. We first met around 1987 in Omaha Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base where we were both young Captains in the 3908th Specialized Contracting Squadron supporting Headquarters Strategic Air Command. We were doing the same kind of thing, contracting for support for SAC, and Rich was awesome at it. Rich and Cindy and I became good friends there and remained ever since. We had lots of important projects back then, Captain Unis had the most prestigious project in the office, the renovation of the SAC Command Post. This is the room you see in the movies when the fate of the world is at hand. He was the hero of the office, making us look good. We went our different ways after that assignment with different tours stateside and overseas and eventually we met up again this time at Langley Air Force Base where we were assigned as Majors at headquarters Air Combat Command. Along with a few other Majors (great guys all) we were doing what we could to assist the 19 or so ACC bases around the world. Rich shared my home with me at Langley and worked at ACC HQ during the week and then hit the road every Friday afternoon to go home to his family in Leesburg. Early Monday morning he would drive straight to work--it was about 3 hours each way. This went on for his two years there without fail. His family was the most important thing in his life. The things we talked about: Back at Langley we studied together to get our master's Degrees, then our professional Contract Management certifications. and we talked a lot about investments. Because of the investments I made then, I was able to buy my family home years later. But the most important thing Rich talked about was his family. How he was so proud of them..... Even funny things like the girls dressing up as Pop icons and doing their dance while lip syncing their songs. Later in life, Rich would be talking about their incredible accomplishments in life. to his last day I know Rich was so very happy with and proud of his family. We met up in Copenhagen as Lieutenant Colonels where I worked in the American Embassy and then we met in Lisbon Portugal and Rich and the family flew in from the Azores and we spent nearly a week in Lisbon for a wonderful time! Last thing. Rich and I talked a lot about getting together and building small wood boats in a workshop. He was planning on a Kayak and I was going to build a rowboat (with a sail if I could). Well, that cannot happen exactly that way now, but maybe I will build something with my son. I want to name my boat "The Unis Unit". That is in memory of Rich and what I used to call the Unis Family members -- The Unis Units. I miss my friend. The best man I ever knew; The Kindest and most professional.

To the Unis family. It’s difficult to come up with the right words for a time like this. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Rich’s friendly nature made him one of the nicest people I could ever hope to meet. He will be missed.
