Recuerdos

I have my family, my faith, my friends. I am the happiest I have ever been and I'm still me.

Patrick "Paddy" Doherty was born on 6 February 1959 in Manchester, England, to Irish Traveller parents — a man who would one day become one of the most recognisable faces on British television, yet who never lost the values instilled in him on the road: family, faith, and fierce pride in who he was. Paddy's early life was shaped by movement and secrecy. His family travelled between Manchester and sites around Birmingham, and he received no formal schooling. As a teenager, a painful family secret was revealed: the grandparents he had grown up believing were his parents had concealed his birth to protect his unmarried mother, Maggie — a truth kept quiet to spare the family shame within the Traveller community. Paddy carried that wound with characteristic resilience, transforming it into empathy for others. Before the cameras found him, Paddy made his name as a bare-knuckle boxer — tough, fearless, and fiercely competitive. That same tenacity carried him into television, where he first appeared on Danny Dyer's Deadliest Men in 2009. He then became a central figure in Channel 4's landmark documentary series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding from 2010 to 2015, which introduced millions of British viewers to Traveller culture and traditions. In September 2011, he won Celebrity Big Brother 8, beating Kerry Katona in the final and becoming one of the first Irish Travellers to achieve mainstream British fame. Television work continued across the following decade — When Paddy Met Sally, Celebrity Bainisteoir, Gypsy Kids: Our Secret World, The Truth About Traveller Crime, and his travel series with Dan. Beyond the screen, Paddy led peaceful protests for Traveller rights, urged Traveller children to stay in education, and spoke openly about his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2019 to encourage other men — especially Traveller men — to seek medical help. His greatest pride was never a trophy or a television credit. It was Roseanne, his wife of nearly fifty years, their ten children, and a growing family of grandchildren. He bore the unbearable loss of four infant children to Fraser syndrome and the death of his son Patrick Simon in 1996 with grief he never hid from the world. Through every sorrow, he turned to the same anchor: "I couldn't have survived without my faith." Paddy Doherty passed away on 9 September 2026. He leaves behind Roseanne, five surviving children, and a community — and a country — that he made more visible, more human, and a little more understood. God bless.

Paddy is known for his tough persona as portrayed in his various TV appearances, however the reality TV star is also proud of his strong family ties and is often shown on Big Fat Gypsy Weddings as tending to his wife Roseanne and caring for and managing his large family.
