Recuerdos

Juan de los Santos aka Johnny was born on July 14, 1937 in Fujian, China. He was the fourth child among 5 siblings. He had 3 older brothers and 1 younger sister. When he was 16 years old, his dad took him to Hongkong to learn English and Cantonese. When he turned 18, he moved to Manila, Philippines to help with a family glassware business. He adapted quickly and was able to learn Tagalog, (a Filipino dialect) in addition to English and Cantonese. He later enrolled at Adamson University at night while working at Oxford Textile Company during the day. Working at Oxford led him to his passion for this industry. His boss liked him a lot and taught him basic textile dyeing and bleaching business and treated Johnny like his own son. Johnny graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1967 and then worked full time at Oxford Textile Company. In September of 1968, Johnny met Jean through his cousin. They both got engaged in January 1969 then got married on May 11, 1969. Johnny came from a Buddhist background and was not a Christian when they met and later became a devout Christian. Johnny and Jean migrated to the States in 1981 and brought their 5 children here in 1983. When he first moved to the States, he wanted to make sure he had a stable job to provide for the family. His first job was as a lab technician at Texprint. He worked there for 8 years then started his own company, LA Gentex. He was well loved by his workers as many of them have been with him for 3 decades. He was very hardworking and very passionate about his business and worked until his passing. He came to the U.S. with the American dream where he worked hard and lived in an apartment, commuting on a bus to owning his own home, company and providing for his family. No matter how stressful life can get, he always had a smile on his face to show everyone that everything is ok. On December 27, 2020, he passed away unexpectedly in his home. Johnny is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean, 2 daughters, Jennifer, Jackie, and 3 sons, Jefferson, Jantzen, and Jamyl, in laws, John, Diane, Afshin, Tiffany and grandkids Lauren, Christian, Madison, Aiden and Cameron.

Uncle Johnny was the first in our family to migrate to the States from the Philippines, because of that, he became the go to person for relatives and friends who are new to the country. He was always so helpful and was so hospitable that he even let some of them stay in their house until they were financially stable to live on their own. I, on the other hand, stayed with them from their apt in LA, to their townhouse in Alhambra and then to their house in San Gabriel During my 1st year in LA,Uncle Johnny encouraged me to look for a job so that I can gain work experience,I found one at a bowling alley but the hours were from 3 to 11 pm so I was not going to take it but he said he will pick me up after my shift because he didnt want me to take the bus late at night, he gave up his sleep for me, it showed me how caring and selfless he was. He also told me to treat his house like it was my own and that i can stay with them for as long as i want Rent Free. I admire him so much for being a risk taker, for being smart, successful, and hardworking. i also love that he always carries a sunny disposition despite all the problems. He was the coolest uncle anyone could ever ask for. My LA journey started with Uncle Johnny, he was the reason I came here, now that he is gone, there is a void in my heart. I feel like I lost my dad for the 2nd time because he was my dad here in the States. Uncle Johnny and Auntie Jean treated me like a daughter and my cousins treated me like a sister. Not only did he give me a roof over my head but he gave me a loving home at a time when I was so homesick. I am so blessed to have him as my Uncle. 4chiak Thank u for all the love, support and guidance u have given me all these years and most of all, for helping me live my American dream i am forever grateful. I know heaven is now your new home but we here on earth will hold on to wonderful memories of you I will miss u tremendously, will miss your signature smile, i love u, rest in peace 4chiak until we meet again!

Papa Johnny, Seems like yesterday that we were together. Then I opened my eyes to realize you were gone forever. It pains our hearts to know you're not here with us for the rest of our lives. Family parties and dinners won't be the same because you won't be there. There's going to be that empty chair near that dinner table, where it's going to be empty and cold. You are a man that gave us inspiration and courage to achieve our goals. You told us our rights from wrong and most of all you put others before you. If I had to do my life over I'd chose you to be my father in law. I love you and honor you. You take all of our sorrows away. I am happy to call you my dad in law and am proud to be your daughter-in-law. You meant the world to us. You treated me as your own. You always took me as your real daughter and will forever be grateful for that. You filled a space that no one will ever replace. You will be forever in our hearts.

My dad has always been my super hero. Whenever I talked about him to anyone, my face always lights up. Even as a little girl, I was so proud that he's my dad. Every one of my friends that has met him used to say, "your dad is so cool" and he was. He was not an affectionate man but he showed his love in his actions. When any of us are sick, he would pop in unannounced and bring us food. When I have a problem, he was one of the first person I turned to. He always knew what to do. He was the rock of our family. He was the one that everyone held on to, to weather the storm. I remembered years ago when I was at my low point. I kept it to myself and pretended everything was okay. I didn't think he noticed that I was in pain. He took me aside one afternoon and told me that he will always be there no matter what my decision was. IT was at that moment that I realized that with his support, everything will be alright. One word comes to mind when I think of my dad. That word is strength. I remembered years ago when he was faced with moving the location of the factory. This was not a small feat and after months of trying to find a new place, he was about to sign a lease to a new location. I remembered sitting in a restaurant with him as he just found out that the new location will not work due to permit issue. So, after all that, he was back to square one. I remembered thinking how stressful this must be for him as time is running out. I wish there was something I could do but I felt powerless. But he just sat there as he smiled reassuringly and said everything will be alright….and it was. For some reason, he always figured it out. My dad is by no means a perfect man but he had a good heart. He dedicated his life to his family. He was loved by all his friends and those that he worked with. He was generous, thoughtful and kind. He was respected as well as admired by a lot of people. Knowing all this, I feel so proud that he is my dad and I had so many beautiful memories that will live in my heart. I'm so glad that my son got to spend time with him and witnessed what a great grandfather he was as well. He was not one to play with the grandkids…but every so often, he would randomly take my son to his favorite toy store and his favorite restaurant and just spend some quality time with him. I will always remember him sitting by the pool and watch all the kids play with a smile in his face. He would always bring snacks out for everyone. This was all it took to make him happy. As it finally sank in that I will never be able to have our talks again, I wondered what happens when the super hero in your life is suddenly gone. How do we go on? I woke up this morning and realized that he lives inside me. His memories will live on and I can hear him say to me as he said all those years ago, everything will be alright. After all, I am my father's daughter and his strength lives in me. I will always persevere no matter what life throws at me because that's what he taught me. He was my dad, my hero, my light….and that light will always burn brightly as long as I live. (I'm attaching one of the last picture I took with just my dad and I. It was my 50th birthday I'm so glad you were there pa!)

One can never prepare for the loss of a parent. I know that it's a part of life, but it still doesn't make it easier to accept. It gives me some solace knowing he's in a better place now. I didn't have a close relationship with my dad. Growing up, he never said he loved me or encouraged me. He just wasn't the affectionate type of person and expressive of his feelings. But I never once felt not loved by him. He just showed it in a different way through his actions and through my family. I have the utmost love and respect for my dad. I aspire to be like him. If I can be just even a fraction of the kind of person he was, I will be a happy man. I saw this quote the other day and I thought this is probably what my dad would want to say to everyone here today. " We live on borrowed time. No one can be sure when the loan will come due. But I'm loving all of mine, I know what time is for, I've borrowed it so I can spend it all right here with you". I love you always dad and you'll forever be in my heart.

When I think of my grandpa, I think of a very selfless man. I remember when he would take Christian and I to church with him and Ama. After the church service, he would always take us to Toys R Us to pick out something. And after that, he would take us to get lunch. He always let us choose the place to get lunch even though most of the time he didn't care much for the food. He always cared about us and loved us so dearly. When all of the family would gather to swim in the pool, he would always come out to just hang out with us even though he never swam. If he wasn't hanging out with us while swimming, he would always make sure we had something to snack on. Whether it was popcorn chicken, boba, slushees, or chips he always made sure something was there. When I would sleep at their house, I remember how he would always wake me up with his jolly voice and prepare my breakfast as I got ready. He was always there every time we needed anything. I remember on one of my birthdays, he made sure to get me the specific doll I wanted since he knew I loved dolls. Kongkong I wish we could've spent more time with you and that I could've hugged you one last time. I love you.

Papa As we look back over time We find ourselves wondering… Did we remember to thank you enough For all you have done for us? For all the times you were by our sides To help and support us… To celebrate our successes To understand our problems And accept our defeats? Or for teaching us by your example, The value of hard work, good judgement, Courage and integrity? We wonder if we ever thanked you For the sacrifices you made. To let us have the very best? And for the simple things Like laughter, smiles and times we shared? If we forgotten to show our Gratitude enough for all the things you did, We're thanking you now, And we are hoping you knew all along, How much you meant to us.
