Recuerdos

Never missed a game. Never stopped giving everything he had.

Cornell M. Green was born on February 10, 1940, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and came of age in California as one of the most gifted athletes of his generation. A standout at El Cerrito High School, he went on to Contra Costa College before transferring to Utah State University, where he became a two-time All-American basketball player in 1961 and 1962. In thirteen seasons on the hardwood, he set a Utah State record with 1,067 career rebounds — a mark that still stands — and scored 1,890 points, ranking sixth in program history. What happened next was the stuff of football legend. With no college football experience and only a single season at the high school level, Green signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 1962, bypassing a fifth-round NBA draft selection from the Chicago Zephyrs. The basketball player became a cornerback almost overnight — and he made it look natural. Known to teammates simply as "Sweet Lips," Green earned a spot on the NFL All-Rookie Team and never looked back. Over thirteen seasons with the Cowboys (1962–1974), Green did something no defensive back of his era could match: he played every single game. All 182 regular-season contests. All 15 playoff games. He never missed a snap. From cornerback in his first eight seasons to safety beginning in 1970, he recorded 34 career interceptions — tied for fifth in Cowboys history — and set a franchise record with ten career blocked kicks. His relentless athleticism and competitive fire earned him five Pro Bowl selections and four All-Pro honors, including first-team recognition in 1966 and 1967. Green was a cornerstone of the Cowboys' famed Doomsday Defense, and the capstone of his playing career came in Super Bowl VI, when Dallas dismantled the Miami Dolphins 24–3. His assignment: shadow Hall of Famer Paul Warfield, widely considered one of the greatest receivers ever to play the game. Green held him in check. That singular performance spoke to everything he was as a competitor. After retiring as a player, Green transitioned seamlessly into scouting, first with Dallas and then with the Denver Broncos, where he spent twenty-eight years. He earned the AFC Scout of the Year Award in 2010 and retired from the game in 2015 at age 75, having spent approximately 46 years total in the NFL. Off the field, Cornell was a devoted husband to Betty Ruth Green for nearly sixty years, a loving father to sons Randy and Ronney, and a proud grandfather to five grandchildren. He passed away on October 21, 2026, at age 86, after a long battle with dementia. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet excellence, unmatched durability, and the kind of greatness that does not require a headline to endure.

We had a lot of those guys that played for the Cowboys that Gil Brandt found were basketball players and ended up being great. Cornell Green, a bunch of them ended up being great football players.

Tom Landry

He had the athletic skills from basketball to become a fine defensive back. His only transition was playing a sport where you could tackle someone with the ball, and Cornell never had a problem dealing with that.

Cornell Green shut out (Miami wide receiver Paul) Warfield. Warfield was like a mega-bomb, and the fact that we were able to prevent him from being who he was – in my mind, the greatest receiver I've ever seen – was remarkable.

You could tell he wasn't brought up in football, because he had his own technique, which worked very well. He probably could have played all three positions back there. I was just a young guy, 21, in the backfield, and here were all these guys… Cornell was just so helpful to me.

Dallas Cowboys Organization

Cornell was a true trailblazer having never played football in college, yet becoming a multi-time Pro Bowler, All-Pro and NFL Super Bowl Champion with the Cowboys playing defensive back from 1962 to 1974. He was a member of the 25th Anniversary Cowboys Team as well. Cornell remarkably never missed a game in 13 seasons, becoming one of the best and most dependable teammates to ever wear the star.

Gil Brandt

I mean, if Cornell had any kind of hands, he would've had three times as many interceptions as he got ... and the guy played basketball in college.
