Recuerdos

A lifetime given freely to the game he loved.

Frank Goode was one of Australian rules football's quietly formidable figures — a sharp-eyed full-forward whose dedication to the game extended far beyond his playing days. Born on 19 December 1939, he grew up through the grassroots of Victorian football, honing his skills at Moe and Heyfield before earning a place in the Victorian Football League. In 1961, Goode pulled on the royal blue and white of the North Melbourne Football Club for the first time, standing 183 cm tall and playing with the composed intensity that would define his career. Over seven seasons, he played 73 games and kicked 107 goals, wearing the number 13 jumper with pride. His finest hours came in 1965 and 1966, when he was the club's leading goalkicker two years running — posting 38 goals in 1965 and a career-best 49 in 1966. An injury to teammate John Dugdale gave Goode the opportunity to cement himself as a genuine full-forward, and he seized it completely. In 1963, his teammates recognised something beyond statistics, voting him the club's Best Clubman award. When injury curtailed his playing career in 1967, Goode turned his passion toward coaching. He spent three seasons guiding North Melbourne's Under 19s, laying the groundwork for many young players. He then took the senior reins at Sandringham in the Victorian Football Association from 1971 to 1972, before joining Footscray — later the Western Bulldogs — as an assistant coach. In 1981, he stepped up as senior coach for a game against Melbourne when Royce Hart fell ill, a testament to the respect he had earned within the football community. His service to the game did not end there. Goode spent five years as a member of the AFL Tribunal from 1982 to 1987, contributing to the governance and integrity of the competition. He also served as a North Melbourne delegate to the Combined Past Players and Officials Association, maintaining his bond with the club throughout his life. Heyfield Football Club, where his journey had begun, later inducted him into their Hall of Fame. Frank Goode passed away on 19 October 2026, aged 86. He leaves behind a legacy built not on headlines, but on goals kicked with purpose, young players guided with care, and a lifetime given freely to the game he loved.
