Souvenirs

The music will never stop playing.

Yuji Ohno (大野 雄二, Ōno Yūji) was a giant of Japanese music — a jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader whose work transformed the sound of anime and left an indelible mark on popular culture across generations. Born on May 30, 1941, in the coastal resort town of Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, he grew up in the founding family of Hotel Ohnoya, where the refined atmosphere may well have nurtured his lifelong sense of style. He began studying piano in elementary school, and by high school was teaching himself jazz entirely by ear — a self-directed passion that would define his entire creative life. He enrolled at Keio University to study law, but it was the university's prestigious Light Music Society big band that truly shaped him. Those ensemble years in the early 1960s gave Ohno both his feel for large-scale jazz arrangements and the camaraderie of the bandstand. After graduating, he worked as a jazz pianist with the Koji Fujika Quintet and other groups through the late 1960s before making the transition to composition for film and television. His breakthrough came in 1976 with his score for Kon Ichikawa's acclaimed mystery film The Inugami Family. Then, in 1977, he composed what would become his masterpiece: the iconic theme song and complete score for Lupin III: Part II. The music — a dazzling fusion of big-band jazz, funk, and disco — was unlike anything anime had heard before. Cool, sophisticated, and irresistibly alive, it set a new standard for what a cartoon soundtrack could be. Two years later, he scored The Castle of Cagliostro, one of the most beloved films in the Lupin franchise. Ohno remained prolific for decades, composing for Captain Future, Space Adventure Cobra, and Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars, as well as live-action films, commercials, and NHK's long-running travel series Chiisana Tabi (Small Journey). In 2006, he founded Yuji Ohno and Lupintic Five — later Lupintic Six — to bring his Lupin music to concert stages, performing with the calm, cool grace that fans and colleagues always described as his hallmark. Known as a true gentleman who met every fan with warmth, he made his final live appearance on May 30, 2024 — his 83rd birthday — at Billboard Live Tokyo. Yuji Ohno passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 4, 2026, at his home in Tokyo. He was 84. His music will never stop playing.
