Recuerdos

"And be kind and tenderhearted toward one another, forgiving one another, even as God has also in Christ forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32

William “Bill” Vernon Hardy went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on December 16, 2024 in Brockville. He was born in Clarkson Ontario on April 21, 1943 to Anson Alan Hardy and Madeline F. Lawrance.

Bill is survived by his wife Susan, his four boys Fraser (Carol), Gordon (Deborah), Daniel (Kerri) and Allan (Hannah), his sister Anna Broeker (Charles), and sister-in-law Jeanette Langevin (Fred). He was blessed to know his 11 grandchildren - Austin, Nathan, Brandon, Ashley, Grace, Brianna, Micah, Avery, Bryson, Liam, and Ollie, and 2 great grandchildren Gavin and Ezra.

Bill attended Oakville Trafalgar High School and went on to study Forestry at the University of Toronto where he graduated in 1967. It was in university where he met the love of his life, Susan Jean Briggs, while changing a lightbulb in her student residence💡. The bulb burned bright and the 56 years of marriage that followed provided inspiration and a solid foundation for an ever expanding family. He demonstrated a deep faith in Christ and was an outstanding husband and father.

Bill’s early life on the family farm and love of the outdoors led him to a career with the Ministry of Natural Resources where he spent many years exploring much of Ontario’s beautiful wilderness. He was passionate about serving those around him in his involvement in the local church community where he had several roles including mentoring men’s groups, contributing to the Fix-it Team, and managing large-scale building projects.

Early in his career as a Forester in Parry Sound, Bill came across a beautiful piece of cottage property that caught his eye. Together, he and Sue used the land to build a legacy of peace, love and acceptance for anyone who travels down the cottage road.

Bill will be remembered for many things including his wisdom, patience, sense of humour, dad jokes, amazing cinnamon buns and pulla bread, love of nature, chainsaw skills, campfires, and his ability to make everyone feel like part of the family. He had a great passion for the outdoors, loved walking the cottage property, and was often found exploring the forest with a compass around his neck. He will be remembered as an outstanding husband, father, papa, uncle and friend.

When I think of Bill I recall his laughter, his cooking, his quiet welcoming nature. The ease in which he made you feel part of his family, and the wisdom he had. You knew you could learn from him in the many things he just knew so much about. Sitting at a bonfire at their cottage, Christmas dinners, so many wonderful memories. Grateful for who he was and for his family. He has created an incredible legacy and will be missed until we see him again in eternity. Our prayers with you all. Love Maria McWhorter (Chattillon)

Uncle Bill was one of the best men I’ve ever known. He has made my life better with the love he showed to me, his friends, my Aunt Sue, his sons who are my wonderful cousins, all of our family & extended Cottage Family. I’ll miss him forever & know he will be with me forever. He was a true woodsman who brought everyone together in the beauty of nature every summer on the lake since I was a baby. So many memories have flooded through since the news came that he had passed a few weeks ago such as his quick, easy laugh, him building the original cottage & us hiking to Johnston rock. One from way back that I especially treasure was him snowmobiling us in before the spring melt & helping him carry buckets of maple sap from the trees to boil in the sugar shack he had built with Herb. We all made delicious maple syrup together because of him. I believe he knows how much we loved and appreciated him. He told me his heart was touched when I asked him to give the blessing to my infant daughter. He blessed her beautifully. He knew how to get a lot done! It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that Uncle Bill could cut down a tree, use those logs to to feed the woodstove & build a campfire to boil water feed 25 of us a corn-on-the -cob & biscuit feast… all in just under an hour on any given day. When his health reduced his mobility, he spoke openly with me from the heart about his grief & the tough adjustment. Then he adapted & lived with grace, gratitude, generosity & wisdom. He always had the steady love of his wife. His goodness & legacy lives on in his sons and their loving families. Our love is with all of you. I picture you up there now throwing some horseshoes & having a laugh with Moe & Herb and all those you loved dearly. Thank you for the memories & the carving you made for me my dear Uncle Bill “Willy Lump Lump” 🛶🍁🧲🌲 I loved being your niece, Lisette ❤️

Although its been many years the memory of my dad and I helping Uncle Bill and Aunt Sue put together a small little cabin on Trout lake is as fresh as yesterday. Cooking on an open fire a pan of fresh caught fish. Its incredible how the years have passed and how the family has grown since that campfire. Who would have guessed how precious that Cabin (now a cottage) is to so many people. It's a shame that with such busy lives and distances we did not have the chance to see everyone before Bill left us. We send our heart felt condolences and hope to see everyone this summer for another fish fry at your cottage. Jeff, Les, Colin and Devin

We called him The Wise one. And for good reason. He will be missed by all who came to know him. My sincere condolences to the Hardy family for your personal loss here on this earth, yet we celebrate with you, Heaven's gain.
