Recuerdos

Seres queridos

Walter, your battle is now over, no more pain, no more fog, no more suffering. You were more than just my beloved husband, you were my best friend, companion, soulmate and my life’s love- our love will last the test of time – you were the greatest man I ever knew, thank you for a wonderful life. Whether you are my angel or among the stars within the universe your love will see me through whenever I’m feeling lonely or sad. Our love is forever, I miss you always but I will try to go forward, I know it would pain you to see me unhappy so I am trying, really I am.

Walter A. Rhoades, age 81 passed away peacefully on April 21, 2019 at Clove Lakes Health and Rehabilitation.

  • Walter grew up on East 82nd Street in Manhattan where Central Park and museums were in his backyard (as Walter would say).
  • He enlisted in the Army and was a medic in Germany.
  • After his service he began his long and successful career at Chase Manhattan Bank in Manhattan,(35 years)
  • He raised his two daughters in Howard Beach Queens with his former wife Inge.
  • Many years later he met and fell in love with his current wife Cathy and they settled in Staten Island.

He is remembered by all that knew him for his love of family, kindness of heart, and wonderful story telling.   His quick wit and humor would bring a smile to people. He loved his Maine vacations especially sharing them with family and friends, boating on Long Lake, star gazing, playing games and just being around those he loved.   Vermont was another favorite vacation spot but not for skiing, the cold crisp winter sky was prefect for star and planet gazing.  He enjoyed music and loved to sing along with Sinatra and show tunes.

  • Walter is survived by his wife Cathy of 32 years, daughters, Debbie and husband Nick, Dawn and husband Dan, brothers, Edward Sr., Tommy and Paul, grandsons, Nicky, Vincent and Dylan, several nieces, nephews and in laws.
  • He was preceded in his death by his parents Catherine and William, sisters Jane, Grace, brothers, Billy and Charlie.

Walter’s legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren and all who loved him.

When someone dies, those close to them always turn to grief, and mourning. In regards to my Pop Pop, those are the polar opposite emotions we should feel. HE wouldn’t want it that way. Pop pop would only want his loved ones to think of the good times, the fun times, and the highs of his life. I think of Maine and going onto Long Lake with the Alvira Walcat. I think of 1776 and our awesome trip to Gettysburg (I still have the gun knife), and his love and passion for US history. I think of astrology and how much he loved to educate me on the stars and the universe. Not going to lie it was always nice to get a crisp $20 bill in my teen years, for no reason other than he loved me. I think about the weekends I would drive to Staten Island and stay over, we’d always go out for dinner and then go home and just talk. Wed talk about everything, and I truly miss that for the last couple of years we didn’t get to have those conversations anymore. I think about how he got to come to my wedding, and I think back now as I start to tear up just how important it was to see him sing at my wedding, speaking of singing, I’ll never forget sitting in the back seat of the car when all the adults were singing good ole Deano, and at the very end me saying I don’t know but I think they’re crazy. I would like to think that without my Pop Pop I wouldn’t be the man I am today. I tend to think that I get my passion for writing from him, my passion for researching everything I hear from him, my love for the water, and most of all without Pop Pop there would be no Maine, and that is my favorite place in the entire world. So I’m just one person, and has affected my life in such positive ways, I can only imagine what he’s done for other loved ones. I can’t say enough great things about this man and I hope to become a grandfather like him someday. It hurts me knowing we lost a lot of years not being able to have the relationship we once had. I really will miss you more than you know and this really is hard to write. So I will end it with this, you aint gonna tell me I don’t love ya. “Fly me to the moon Let me play among the stars Let me see what spring is like On a, Jupiter and Mars In other words, hold my hand” In other words, in other words I love you. - Frank Sinatra Love always, Nicky, Nitmo, Schwerben Written April 2019

Written by Dawn BAIERLEIN Ketz, 2019.04.21 From the minute we are born to the moment we take our last breath, there is that little time in between it all that we call life. How does one celebrate the life Walter RHOADES… With a gin and tonic, a hat, a great Sinatra song, and loved ones by his side to help him sing it. Now I’m not going to ask you all to sing so don’t worry… But I am going to show you how he can be celebrated everyday.. to do so we must start at the top of the family pyramid Cathy ... In Cathy we see his unconditional love ...no question. A forever partnership built on mutual adoration, respect, and Undying love...Their relationship is a testament to true love. It was an honor to have grownup up seeing that fairytales do come true. In Debbie we see his sensitivity, his emotions, his sense of humor and worry, his love for a good cocktail and a good argument. But Most of all his love. In me, Dawn, we see his love for the arts. Daddy always loved a good show tune or Sinatra song, and let’s face it, we’re both stubborn, opinionated and unpredictable. But again we see his love. In Nicholas we see his sense of adventure. Both love a good party for sure and there’s no better place to party than Naples Maine... A place that Nicholas has embraced and enjoys to the fullest because of his pop pop...And again we see his love. In Vincent we see so many physical resemblances especially dads smile. He was quite the actor and singer… And so is Vincent.. but again, we see his love. Last but not least is Dylan… In Dylan we see dad‘s sense of organization, his sarcasm and quick wittedness and finally somebody inherited his mathematical skills… But one thing remains constant and that is his love. It is within these things that his legacy lives on, and as long as we are open to and recognize the signs we can take him with us wherever we go. He had so many dad-isms/Walterisms “Don’t tell me I don’t love you” “More wine for cyclops” “Only the rocks live forever” And so many more. He always signed his cards to us with Love FUF which meant FROM A U FATHER. but there’s one “ism” that’s very fitting for today We are all made of star stuff.. I am privileged to be his daughter Thankful for the happiness he has given to us. Grateful that he gave me life and that the universe chose him to be my father. Although I was not present when he began his life, I am so very very lucky to have helped him leave us and become part of the universe. So, Look up my dear friends and family... And when you do, raise a glass... a gin and tonic glass... and toast to Walter. For he is now among the stars.✨
