Recuerdos

“A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” – Maya Angelou

Alene Tena Marie Hopper Mize (Tena) was born on April 7th, 1955 in Orange California (St. Joseph’s Hospital). Tena’s parents , Lila and Alton Hopper, raised Tena along with her two sisters, Alice and Sarah, and her two brothers, Bobby and Randy. Tena grew up in Santa Ana and graduated from Los Amigos High School (class of 73). Tena is survived by her sisters Alice McClain and Sarah Nix.

On January 10th, 1976, Tena and Bob Mize were married. Together, they raised their children (Amie, Carla, Jacob, Jason, Mary, Sandra, and Tatiana). God gifted Tena with a beautiful angel-like voice that allowed her to lead worship at First Southern Baptist Church of Fountain Valley, Calvary Chapel Cypress, Calvary Chapel Westminster, Calvary Chapel West Grove, and finally, the Bridge Community Church of Anaheim.

Tena touched thousands of young peoples’ lives. From the youth ministries at church to the high school choirs of John F. Kennedy High School, to the many soccer teams her children played on.

Tena went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 23, 2020. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, understanding, and most importantly, her love for others.

Ms Tena was my second grandma. She let me play her piano and is the reason I wanted to learn how to play. She is also the reason I love dogs because I got to play with her dogs all day. She took care of me when I was sick. I love you Ms Tena!

Nana, I was blessed to call you my friend, work with you, know you, and share laughs with you. I am sad I never took a picture with you but you will forever be in my heart. Your smile, positive attitude, hope, faith and encouragement impacted ALL who came in contact with you. I can not mention the fact that you were a phenomenal cook who make the best banana and pumpkin bread ever!!! Every time I see "tortilla soup" I think, "but it's not Nana's Bomb Tortilla Soup". I think there were other words used to describe it, but we'll leave it at bomb tortilla soup. I will miss your smile, laugh, sassiness, and spirit. I loved it when you'd call me Syl! I Love you and your family more than words can say. I will miss you and cherish every moment I spent with you. Love you Nana!

Tena and I have known each other since we were 14 years old enjoying trips with the Youth Group at the Church and singing in the Choir. Tena had a beautiful voice and sweet spirit. When I found out that she had adopted transracially, I loved her even more since I'm adopted from Korea. Thanks Tena for sharing some of your Life Joy with me.

What can I or anyone really say about such a selfless, strong, beautiful human being. Just being in her presence made me a better person. The void left in all of our hearts can never ever be replaced. Thank you for taking care of our kids like they were your own. Thank you for working tirelessly. Thank you for setting an example for all us to follow in everything we do. You will be missed more than words can express. Always and forever in our hearts. Love, The Marvin Family

I came across this Senior photo of Tena in one of my parents photo albums. Tena had given it to our family with a sweet touching message. My dad was the pastor of the church she and her family attended growing up. Though I was younger I have fond memories of her. She was so beautiful inside and out and brought so much joy to those around her. She will always hold a special place in my heart and my families. Praying for you all during this difficult time.
