Funny Friend, a “poem” about my friend Susan, by Sudie Daves Thomas (I do not claim to be a poet but I read at lot of Dr. Seuss and so did Susan...) Often now when I sit and think -- About my friend, my spirits sink; I cannot call her, we can’t hang out, I can’t ride by to give her a shout. But, I do have funny memories of my silly friend Susan – DO YOU? I know you have at least one or two -- I know you do! When we were young- you know back then, Susan was up for adventure to begin. During those days, I spent many-a-minute, WAITING for Susan to get ready and with it. Always waiting for my friend, I thought the waiting would never end! Had to count on her to be slow to arrive, But then much of the fun was had on the drive… It was safe to calculate being late When, as usual, Susan was my date… Frustration was destined to fade away Because upon her arrival, it was time to play! A thing we often did Was “ride-around” Rocking out to cassettes And new places we found (or by your house!). She was “tickled pink” to go out with the girls, Even though sometimes this caused her to hurl… Glen our driver, kept us safe, In the Monte Carlo; taking up space. Susan was happy to go out with friends But she often preferred game night in the den… Stupid movies 80’s style made Susan and crew laugh all the while. We laughed so much we watched them again, After dancing and singing with Prince or Van Halen. You know, she was pretty good at sports, Snow ski, water ski, even tennis (doubles in matching skorts!) Don’t forget horseback, she was good at riding too; With that fancy helmet, blazer and those slim, tall boots. Susan had a funny way of getting her kicks, She liked being silly and liked playing tricks… She certainly had that mischievous streak, She enjoyed being devious and making you FREAK! I always had to watch my back With Susan the prankster Ready to attack! Kids in her class Thought that she was Bad-ass, Teaching youngsters as she did, Was the perfect job for this big kid! Crowned princess Susan, she should be, After all that time spent at Disney. She memorized, in her head Every line Audrey Hepburn said, She did the same for Vivian Leigh, Especially as Scarlett in the 19th century. I think she saw herself in them; Strong-willed and clever, with well sewn hem. Wait, where are my boots? Oh and that sweater? There’s Susan, dressed up looking cute, now I remember! Flick and pull of the hair, She could lay it down just right. That was her proven method to get that hair tight. Here we go again, Time for a par-tay… So y’all at the food table Need to move out the way! Susan flashes in my mind all the time Blasting music and singing songs (some version of them); Water-skiing in the sunshine. Eating snickers, skiing the slopes, Biking or walking down Lakeland Drive. Loving and faithful to family, Glen, mom and dad, A fierce momma bear her 3 cubs had. I miss the mischievous spark in her eyes, But I can see where it landed - in Anna Grace and the guys! They are easy and fun like their mom, Generous and kind; in general the Bomb. My memory holds her with a big bright smile, Twinkling eyes, and a voice full of fun - Getting me into things I wouldn’t have planned or imagined, But soon after, I was up for a rerun! I hope everyone who knew her can guess the conclusion, That about all I know to do is dwell on my happy memories with Susan. But also to re-enact them with friends and make more! Stay silly and see what else our time together has in store….
