Recuerdos

Susan Elizabeth Brentnall, 74, of Oceanside, died peacefully September 28, 2021, after a brave battle with Lewy body dementia. She was born to parents Sidney and Marjorie Churm, July 28, 1947, in Nottingham, England. Her father was an aircraft engineer for BOAC and throughout Susan's childhood the family lived in Limerick, Ireland; Nassau, Bahamas; Kano, Nigeria; Tripoli, Libya; and Caracas, Venezuela. She attended Our Lady's Convent in Loughborough for her secondary education. Susan married Peter in 1967, building a life together for 18 years before the birth of their daughter, Philippa (Philly). The family resided in Frimley, Surrey until 1998, when they immigrated to Mountain View, California. She is survived by her three siblings-Adrian, Jane, and Chris-as well as her brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Susan worked as a secretary, telephonist, barmaid, pub landlady, auxiliary nurse, and special education teaching assistant, but it was her role as a wife and mother that brought her most joy in life. Her care and concern for her husband and daughter eclipsed everything until her last breath-and her love extended far beyond biology as she welcomed all of their friends like family. She enjoyed any excuse to gather, whether it be at their home in Oceanside or in the audience at a concert (where she could always be spotted thanks to her infamous bucket hat). A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 20 at 11 a.m. PT on GatheringUs. Donations can be made in memory of Susan to the Lewy Body Dementia Association and PAWS.

What a beautiful tribute to such a fun mama. I adore the Brentnall family so much. I'd love to have the playlist from Saturday to continue to honor Sue... a Sue playlist sounds delightful if you'd like to share. Love you Philly & Peter! xo

Found these in mum's albums - I love how easily she has got me to fall asleep on her. The Coca Cola one I remember granny having in her bedroom at St Bernard's court.

After sitting through that wonderful memorial on Saturday, I have to admit to feeling incredibly jealous of all of you who knew Sue well. I only met her once, when I had lunch with she and Pete not long before the lockdown. A bunch of us used to have weekly Thursday night happy hours and when the lockdown started we moved it to zoom and Sue started attending. She'd be sat on the couch in the background and it wasn't long before she started to share her opinion:-) It was funny because we're a bunch of loud guys who've worked together for decades, talking all over each other, but there would always be silence when Sue had something to say. We soon realized that she could give as good as she got so we weren't on our best behavior for long. Mark F, you are so right about Sue's honesty, yet another thing she shared with Pete. When she started to deteriorate, before her diagnosis, Pete made sure to tell us everything, to make sure we weren't upset if Sue did or said something on our calls, like that could ever happen. So typical of them to worry about others when they were facing such adversity. I'll miss our hours spent on zoom every week

My favorite memory of Sue was when she and Peter showed up with Philly at one of our random apartment parties. They were always the guests of honor from that point on. I'll never forget asking Sue how she was and she, as always, actually told me the truth. She said how things had been difficult for her. She had been feeling depressed. But she was on medication and it had really helped her, and now things were looking up. This kind of honesty made me immediately feel closer to her. She didn't speak in empty platitudes or serve up small talk. This courage to speak of mental illness frankly has continued to inspire me to not pretend things are all right all the time. Sue was loving and warm, yes, but she was also a complex human who didn't hide her struggles. I will miss her so much.

Sue and I talked about our love of dogs and our love of each other's dogs every time we saw each other. She was a wonderful and kind soul and had a spunk in her that was most admirable. Sending love to you Philly, Peter and Ollie ❤️ The celebration of life for Sue was very moving today.
