He devoted his entire life to the fight for Jharkhand's identity, rights, and pride.

Sudivya Kumar — known warmly to friends and colleagues as "Sonu" — was one of Jharkhand's most dedicated public servants and a towering figure within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). Born on 26 July 1970, in Giridih, Bihar (now Jharkhand), to Shambhu Nath, he came of age during the defining years of the Jharkhand movement and devoted his entire adult life to the cause of Jharkhand's identity, rights, and people. Kumar's association with the JMM stretched back to the movement's earliest days alongside its founder, the revered Shibu Soren — known as Baba Dishom Guruji. That bond shaped every chapter of his political journey. He contested the Giridih Assembly seat in 2009 and again in 2014, finishing second in the latter contest, but he refused to be discouraged. In 2019, his perseverance was rewarded: he won from Giridih with 80,871 votes, finally carrying the mandate of the people he had long served. Five years later, in 2024, the electorate renewed its trust, returning him to the assembly with 94,042 votes. His legislative career ran alongside his growing prominence within the JMM, where he served as General Secretary and earned a reputation as the party's "think tank." He was the trusted troubleshooter Chief Minister Hemant Soren turned to in moments of crisis — none more consequential than January 2024, when Soren was arrested on money-laundering charges and Kumar steadied the party through the storm. In December 2024, Soren appointed Kumar to his cabinet, where he held portfolios spanning Higher and Technical Education, Urban Development and Housing, Tourism, Art and Culture, and Sports and Youth Affairs. As Higher Education Minister, he engaged directly with students during tense disputes over JPSC-JSSC examinations — a hands-on style that defined his approach to governance. Among his final official acts was leading a Jharkhand delegation to Karnataka to explore cooperation on tourism infrastructure. In the early hours of 6 September 2026, Sudivya Kumar was rushed to Mercy Hospital in Giridih after complaining of chest pain. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at approximately 4:00 am. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his wife Shweta Sharma and their three children — two daughters and one son. The state of Jharkhand declared a two-day mourning period in his honour. Soren, who called Kumar his elder brother in grief, perhaps said it best: his absence left a void that cannot be expressed in words.
