Recuerdos

Steven J Moore passed away peacefully in the late evening on Thursday, November 16, 2017, at IU Health Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife Linda and son Mike by his side. He’d been successfully battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an unexplained scarring of the lungs, for a number of years until the disease suddenly and aggressively set in—wouldn’t you know it?—just as football season began. Steve was born in Bryan, Ohio, on Monday, November 27, 1944, to John J. and Leone Edith “Edie” Moore. He excelled in baseball and football and graduated Bryan High in 1962. Following in his big brother Dave’s footsteps, Steve attended The Ohio State University before returning to Bryan to begin a 35-year career with the ARO Corporation/Ingersoll Rand. Steve married the love of his life, Linda—despite her being from Michigan—on December 30, 1967. When their pride and joy, Michael David, came along in June of 1974, Steve quickly swaddled him in a “Beat Blue” t-shirt, and a shared passion for Buckeye football began that would easily withstand Mike’s eventual graduation from Indiana University. (Against doctor’s orders, they attended the OSU at IU game together last August 31). Reminiscing with family recently, Steve singled out two proud family moments that took place over his last few years living in Bryan: rejoining the Wesley United Methodist Church and seeing Linda join and Mike confirmed; and serving on the committee that spearheaded the local “It’s Time” campaign to get a new middle school built in 1986. Steve’s true calling of “helping people solve problems” flourished when he became district manager of industrial field sales for ARO/IR’s Kentucky and Indiana territory in 1989. He received IR’s “Circle of Excellence” honor four years in a row, and later took a similar position at Tec-Hackett of Indianapolis before retiring in 2012. Steve Moore’s favorite saying was “Keep It Simple, Stupid.” Live the Golden Rule. Keep your word. Be honest. Be optimistic. Be prepared. Be kind. Steve relentlessly tended to others’ welfare before his own. He sacrificed countless personal interests in favor of helping forward his son’s music career, and tirelessly supported Linda as she cared for her mother, and later her sister, in their home. Later-in-life thrills for Steve included his Buckeyes winning another championship, his Cubs finally winning the World Series, his son playing the Grand Ole Opry, and, otherwise, simply watching movies and tooling around town with Linda. He was her “lemonade man,” always making lemonade out of lemons, looking on the bright side, and maintaining a sense of humor till the very end—which, in his case, was spent chuckling under his breath at Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein while slipping into sedation, and passing away only after the infamous campfire scene in Blazing Saddles. Steve Moore was preceded in death by his mother, Edith, his father, John, his mother-in-law, Marian Dean, and his brother-in-law, Bob Buchanan. Survivors include wife Linda, son Michael, brother David, David’s wife Sharon, Dave and Sharon’s kids Jan, Terry and John and their families, Linda’s sister Cynthia Buchanan, and Linda’s brother Bill Dean. In lieu of a service, there will be a celebration of Steve’s life held in Bryan in the spring of 2018. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Steve’s name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at PulmonaryFibrosis.org. Condolences and requests for updates on Steve’s spring celebration may be posted at Qeepr.com/profile/StevenJMoore/. The Moore Family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and entire staff of IU Health for showing such care and compassion during Steve’s final days.

I was saddened to hear about Steve's passing, so unexpected and premature. Steve, our BHS football captain, was one of the most popular guys in our class and also one of the nicest. I remember his ready smile and his warm, considerate nature. Linda and Mike, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss.

The news from Mike that Steve was out of medical options and that he had chosen to go peacefully hit our family like a hard punch. Linda, Mike and Cindy our thoughts and prayers go out to you in this difficult emotional transition. Steve and I and our sons shared many Boyz of Summer moments which we look forward to sharing at the celebration of life in Bryan next year. Our many years of shared family Christmas gatherings are especially treasured.
