Scott Donald Reid passed away on June 29, 2021.   Husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, Scott leaves behind a powerful legacy of genuine kindness, compassion and goodness.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sherry, who has been on this journey since they met at age 13 as freshman in high school.   Blessed to be surrounded by family while residing in Phoenix, Arizona, he remained a constant presence in the lives of his kids, son Brian, with wife Jennifer and their kids Jackson (17) and Brennan (14) and daughter Lindsay, with husband Kevin and their kids Cooper (14) and Morgan (12).   He was committed to being a loving brother to his sister, Judy and her family, including kids Tammy and Troy and their families.

He remained close with many teammates, both football and baseball, from his time at Pico Rivera High School, UC Berkeley (Football), Cerritos Junior College (Baseball), and Arizona State University (Baseball).  His athleticism earned him recognition as a member of the All-American Baseball Team in 1967 and as a member of the College World Series All-Decade Team for the 1960s.  Despite being drafted a few times by other teams in 1965 and 1966, Scott’s professional playing career began after being drafted in the second round in June 1967 by the Philadelphia Phillies organization.   After time in the minors, Scott played two years in the Major Leagues for the Phillies before transitioning into coaching and scouting roles for the remainder of his career.  Reid served roles as a scout and front office executive for the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers, retiring in November 2020. He was recognized by the Major League Baseball Scouts Association in 2017 as a “Legend In Scouting” as he approached his 50th year in the game.

He will be remembered for his unquestionable work ethic and dedication, and his true passion for his family and his work.  There was not a person he spent time with that he didn’t want to talk to and get to know, from other scouts or folks in the industry, to ticket takers and stadium attendants at any venue he ever attended.   He was a friend to all and a mentor to many.   His impact will be felt in many ways for the generations that are blessed to enter the next phases of their lives with memories in their heart of their time with him.

Rest in Peace, Scott.   We hope every meal has three items in heaven.

Please join our family and friends for a celebration of the life of Scott Reid on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Mountain View Lutheran Church in Ahwatukee (Phoenix, Arizona).   For complete details and to RSVP, please visit the EVENTS page.

My heartfelt condolences to Sherry, Brian and Lindsay. Scott was one of the all-time greats in our game and in life. As kind as they come and a gentleman personified. I always looked forward to being in his company - always willing to share his knowledge and always a willing listener. RIP my friend - you are deeply missed.

On behalf of Sun Devil Baseball, our thoughts are with the entire Reid family as you celebrate Scott's incredible life Friday evening. The program has always taken great pride in the progression of many Sun Devil Baseball student-athletes once they left Tempe to pursue their dreams in professional baseball. Scott is no exception as his name is all over the ASU record books for his contributions as National Champion, Major League Baseball player, and decorated front office executive. We are forever proud of our teammate for his contributions to the great game of baseball and for representing Arizona State University with such great class and pride. May he rest in peace eternally. Sincerely, Coach Willie Bloomquist and Graham Rossini on behalf of the Sun Devil Baseball program.

How often do you meet someone who greets you with a warm and genuine smile each and every time you see him, regardless of how much time has passed between encounters? Mr. Reid was one of those rare individuals. To see Mr. Reid and spend even a few minutes with him was time well spent and an interaction that would brighten any day. My career in our game was a direct result of his influence, and for that I will forever be grateful. I will hold dear those occasions the last 20 years when our travel schedules would lead us to the same press box or scout section affording me the opportunity to visit with him about our game and life in general. Each one was a blessing. Mr. Reid was a humble example of class and character, and someone whom I will always admire and remember fondly. I regret I am unable to be there this weekend to properly pay my respects. My heart and thoughts will be with you as you gather in his honor.

Scott represented the very best of the game we love. The outstanding teams he helped to build are a testament to his baseball acumen, yet his greatest legacy remains the care and kindness he invested in all of his relationships, at the ballpark and everywhere he went. My prayers will be with you from afar as you celebrate Scott’s extraordinary life.
