Souvenirs

Samuel Stelwyn Hornbeck passed peacefully at age 90 in comfort care at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula on the morning of July 19, 2021. Survivors are daughter Janis Hornbeck Palm of Oakdale, California, daughter Jeanne Hornbeck (Lance) Pratt of Monterey, California, three grandchildren including John Palm, Michael (Dyan Smith) Palm and Elizabeth Pratt (Dillon Gardner). His sisters are Patricia Douglas of Paso Robles, California and Kathryn (Scott) Loring of Bend, Oregon. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren, as well as his constant companion Daisy the cat. Sam was born in Butte, Montana to Hallie Marie Hornbeck (born Whetstone) and Samuel Franklin Hornbeck. His beloved stepfather was Harry Stelwyn Irwin, from whom he adopted his middle name of Stelwyn. A graduate of North Hollywood High School class of 1949, Sam's Army career began at age 17, and soon after this he met and married Maxine Cass of Salinas. You know she was in for an adventure one way or the other! His career took him and the family to Japan, back to California, Korea, Texas, Germany, Kentucky and Ohio over the course of 26 years. The Sergeant Major retired in 1975, and he and Maxine made their home once again in the Monterey area. He joined the staff of the Dudley Knox Library at the Naval Postgraduate School in 1976. The library was his home for 34 years and the staff his family. Sam was a patriot, a talented trout fisherman, photographer, cartoonist, oil painter and expert prankster. His zest for life was pretty clear to all who knew him, and to many strangers he met along the way. He was a huge fan of Montana, aviation, and classic and antique cars. He was a terrible singer but that didn't stop him from enjoying and sharing all sorts of music, and he wasn't shy about spreading butter on cookies. He had a joke for everyone most every day, even for his caregivers at the end, and some of you remember the filthier ones. Wherever he is now, there are "tight lines," laughter and plenty of goofiness. There was no more loving dad or husband. The family would like to acknowledge that in the end, Sam was a tissue donor, giving the gift of better life to burn patients and cancer patients. He'd be proud to know he is an example to us to check "yes" for organ donation on that DMV application. Ashes were scattered in the Monterey Bay along with those of Maxine.

Donations may be made to American Heart Association, Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust, National MS Society, or Golden Oldies Cat Rescue of Monterey, California.

From the first day I met Sam in the Monterey Airport, he welcomed me with open arms, a warm heart, and, of course, a prank. Sam's joy for life was infectious and he had a remarkable way of bringing levity and fun to everyone he met. I will always remember him with the twinkle in his eye and ready joke at hand.

Sam and his boss! Further evidence that Jeanne and I are cat people by nature!

I barely knew Sam, and only toward the end of his life but this charming obituary makes it clear that this was my loss, that knowing him well would have been a joy.

On this 2022 Memorial Day I honor Sam for his dedicated service to America as demonstrated by the care and attention he paid to the officer-students, faculty and staff of the Naval Postgraduate School where he was the heart and soul of the Dudley Knox Library for more than 4 decades. I miss his witty good humor, willingness to try new things, and the care with which he maintained the Library, once named the Federal Library of the Year. Fair winds and following seas Sam. Thank you for your service and the legacy you left behind.

I have really been struggling to write something. Sam and Maxine were both such wonderful people, and I feel so lucky to have loved them, and been loved by them. How lucky we all have been, to know someone so hilarious and silly as to bring their cat to work. There is comfort in these memories and this gratitude. What else can one say?

Hello friends. We offer this page as a place for you to enjoy memories and stories of our dad, Sam, and to share your own. The early life of Army “brats” is both full of separation and loss, and precious opportunities. We got to live in Europe (we missed out on Japan since we were babies there!), we knew people from all over the world, but were distant from our own family and got pretty good at saying good-bye. “Home” was wherever Mom and Dad and our grandparents were that year. Although the ground under our feet kept shifting, they had our backs no matter what. You who knew Sam know he could fit right in anywhere with humor and grace. An excellent example for us. Since this crazy couple got married as kids (18 and 19!) and had their own kids soon after, they got to experience the joy of grandchildren while they themselves were still young. So much fun! Sam was devoted to taking care of Maxine through her struggle with MS for many years. He was heartbroken and never the same after our mom passed in 2006. Eventually he was able travel to New Hampshire to see my family and I a couple of times. Among those beautiful New England October and summer days we saw a couple of examples of the true Sam, generous and always funny. One was as he and I walked out of a seaside restaurant as another man was walking in. The stranger got one look at Sam, did a double take and happily called out “Mike!! How are ya, buddy?! It's been ages!” Dad said “Hey!! Great!! How've YOU been?!” And they wished each other well and promised to get in touch, etc. Outside I asked “What did you do that for?” and he replied, shrugging, “He was so happy to see Mike!” Then a different time there was a scene in a parking garage. A woman ahead of us in the line to pay the young man in the booth didn't have her credit card, and she started to berate him. Dad stepped up out of line, whipped his card out and paid, ending an ugly scene for all of us, and being the example. The natural ease of a simple act of human generosity with no hesitation. We are so thankful to have been able to be his neighbor in Monterey for the last 5 years. The world is different now since Sam moved on. You were all loved, and we move ahead with gratitude.
