Recuerdos

"Country roads, take me home /To the place I belong" (John Denver) Roy C. Schriever, 63, of Denville, passed away peacefully at Morristown Memorial Hospital on July 1 after an eight-week battle with Covid-19. His passing reminds all that knew him of the impact of a kind gesture, a friendly wave, and a positive attitude. Roy began working for the NJ Department of Transportation at seventeen years old, starting as a maintenance worker and working his way up to area supervisor before retiring in 2014. Dedicated career and volunteer firemen have surrounded Roy his entire life. He began volunteering at age 18 in Secaucus and eventually joined the Denville Volunteer Fire Department. He has been an active volunteer fireman for the last 45 years. It is true what they say about the "brotherhood" as many of the friends Roy made through the fire department became more like family. When he wasn't obsessing over his lawn, he could be found hunting, fishing, or hanging out with his best friends in his bungalow. Some of his yearly trips included fishing in the Florida Keys, hunting in Indiana, and four-wheeling in Canada. With Roy, there was never a topic too crude to discuss or a day too busy to help out a friend. His best days were spent "shootin' the shit", with a cold beer in hand. Roy leaves behind the love of his life, Jo Ann (Corea), to whom he was married for the last 41 years. As high school sweethearts who grew up in Secaucus, they eventually moved to the Indian Lake section of Denville in 1981 to start a family. His greatest joy was raising two children, with whom he was very close. To them, he was known as "Bud" because he was more than a dad; he was also their buddy. He was a living example of what it means to love hard and play hard. He never wasted an opportunity to show people he cared. These are the qualities that will live on in his children and grandchildren. Bud leaves behind many fond memories with his daughter, "Snooks"(Jennifer), and son-in-law, Chris Skomial, and his son, "Buck" (Jason), and favorite daughter-in-law, Rebecca Schriever. Although many saw Roy as a "man's man", he was a softy when it came to his grandchildren. For the last seven years, Roy was known as "Pop Pop" to Hudson and Avery Schriever, and Bradyn, Kendall, and Taylor Skomial. Roy also leaves behind his brother, John, and sister-in-law, Marie Schriever, and other family, including: Stephen and Barbara Schacht, Dominick and Carol Zito, many nieces and nephews, and his four-legged hunting partner, Tucker. The Denville Volunteer Fire Department will hold a short memorial service outside the Main Street Firehouse on Saturday, July 18 th at 10 AM. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date when we can all be together safely. We hope you will join us at that time to celebrate a life well lived. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a donation to a charity that supports first responders and their families such as Tunnel2towers.org Gone Fishin' I've finished life's chores assigned to me, So put me on a boat headed out to sea. Please send along my fishing pole For I've been invited to the fishin' hole. Where every day is a day to fish, To fill your heart with every wish. Don't worry, or feel sad for me, I'm fishin' with the Master of the sea. We will miss each other for awhile, But you will come and bring your smile. That won't be long you will see, Till we're together you and me. To all of those that think of me, Be happy as I go out to sea. If others wonder why I'm missin' Just tell 'em I've gone fishin' (Delmar Pepper)

I first meet Roy at NJDOT 36 years ago. He was a great friend and co-worker. Had many laughs. He was a person you can count on. He will truly be missed. I added some pictures of Roy with the NJDOT Pincic and returement parties that I found. My condolences to the Schrjever family.

My family were members of the SFD Band starting in the mid 60's. So (at least on a part time basis) I sort of grew up around the plaza firehouse. My parents knew and were friendly with the Glaesers and Schrievers. Being slightly younger than Art Glaeser and the Schriever boys, I always thought they were the coolest guys and happy that they even associated with me. I met Roy thru John (Herman). He was one of the kindest and nicest guys you would want to meet. He would always stop to talk to me when we would meet and fill me in on what is new. I always remember his attitude as always being up. I am sure he was a great father and grandparent. I was shocked to hear of his illness and then death. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. A great man

I first met Roy in 1975 while working at the NJ Department. We were same generation employees climbing the career ladder together. His was an excellent co-worker and teammate but even a better human being. He truly cared about those he supervised and seemed like he always had their back. A kind soul, a big friendly smile and always took a time to say hello and chat for a spell or a bit longer. Called Home at too much of a young age. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, grandchildren and entire family. Roy, you were a special dude...till we meet again on the big highway in the sky, rest in peace my friend.

From Sue Kaufmann: To my dear friend and neighbor Roy, and to your beautiful family: Yours was a life that ended up being way too short, but one that was so well lived. What a gift to have lived a life with the only regret being there just wasn't enough of it. As I sit here looking over at the bungalow, I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.... just can't wrap my mind around the fact that I'll not see you again. For 33+ years, you and Jo Ann have been the best neighbors. What a special pleasure it has been to watch your Jen and Jason grow into the remarkable adults they are with such beautiful families. You were so proud of them, so proud. And you were blessed to share your journey with the love of your life, a love story that I know transcends time. Not to overlook your ever loyal sidekick Tucker....he needs no words to let us all know how much he is lost without his Bud, but he knows you left him with one last job to do and he is doing it well. And I have been blessed to have had your friendship all these years. You were always there with a joke, a smile, a helping hand. You were my "honey do" and always made me laugh. The bungalow is empty of your robust energy. The neighborhood is just too quiet and will never be the same. You have touched so many lives, likely more than you ever knew, and we now all struggle to move through our grief to the place where the happy memories reside. So until we meet again, my dear friend....

Joe and I are soo very saddened by Roy's end of journey. We have been blessed to spend time with him here in Tracy/Fredericton Junction, New Brunswick Canada with friends Buddy, Ed, Tommy, Bob and Mike going 4 wheeling, having bon fires, playing cards, and always lots of laughter and stories..and a few cold ones too! He liked the Vodka, tonic and cranberry and my special Margaritas! He always shared great stories of fishing and hunting and showed us that same photo of his big catch! Our hearts go out to the whole family as we feel this loss with you all. Please know Roy's presence will always remain in our memories and we will keep his stories alive. We will miss you Roy, our friend ❤ Kat and Joe

Glen and I will always remember Roy as a fun loving, happy man who adored his wife and was proud of his kids. It's so hard to believe he is gone. Our hearts go out to his family and friends - especially his bungalow friends. You are in our prayers.
