Bob was the first member I met when I joined Charleston National. I was contemplating building a house, and had already joined the club as a member. I don't recall what the occasion was, but I sat with Bobby over a dinner at the club including an adult beverage or two. We hit it off immediately, not an oddity when it concerned the Bob-strocity. I was in the midst of a rather unsatisfactory marriage at the time, and Bobby commiserated with me, but said something like "I probably don't deserve it, but I've found a real great GAL. Sue -- is the most wonderful woman I've ever met. I can't believe how lucky I am." After all these many years, I'd have to say that Bobby knew what he was talking about. They are wonderful together, and I feel privileged to have known them individually and as a couple.

Bob arranged a Ryder Cup style tournament between a few of us from Charleston National vs. some of his friends from the U.K. Our team had a few golf members plus the Charleston National club pro, and his father, another PGA member. We had a great, like GREAT TIME. Before engaging in golf combat, I met with Bobby (for cocktails?) and we visited a friend of his, who ran a guest-house in London. Knuckles convinced me to pretend to be a Polish National in trying to get a room at his friend's establishment, with Bobby remaining out of sight. I tried my best to be a pain in the a.., when I arrived at his friend's door; demanding a room, demanding to pay in Polish currency rather than Euros, etc. I think I'd gotten Bobby's friend to his last thread of decency, when I mentioned that I got my reservation by result of a reference from Bob Ollerhead. At which point, the guy said "Really??!! Ollerhead??!! Where is that S.O.B? " and we all had a huge laugh about it.

Booby was true friend and a great golf partner. Enjoyed many rounds of golf with him.

On our trip to England to play in a Ryder Cup style competition between a bunch of us from Charleston National, and Bobby's buddies from the U.K., we had lively competition and more than a few "moments". One of my faves is the day we played Walton Heath, where a Ryder Cup had been competed, and whose membership included Winston Churchill among other noted members. (Bobby had some high class friends.) The "gentleman" who arranged the British lineup, which included "The Voice of Golf on the BBC" as well as several club pros, was a wonderful, if flawed golfer whose life included regular bouts of drunkenness, cocaine use, and a general "flair" for life. The day in question was a heat wave, absolutely outside the norms for England, and Bobby's English friend was suffering from a "bout with the Devil" from the previous night, but was dressed all in black. In an effort to fight off the sun's rays, he had put his hankie, soaked in water, on the top of his bald head, somewhere during the round. As the rest of our (U.S.) team waited at the 18th hole, tied for the lead with our U.K. friends, Bob's friend came up the 18th fairway, obviously suffering from the ravages of an intense hangover as well as the extremely hot temperatures and an unfiltered sun, his hat/hankie/sunshade had disappeared; his bald head directly affected by the merciless sun. Knuckles, in the perfect English accent called out, "I say, Stewart, it seems you have lost your hat." HOnestly, I don't know who won, but it doesn't make a difference. We all had a super time. Always a super time with the Bobster.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby when we both worked as caddies at Kiawah. Bobby and I spent many rounds of golf together, and shared lots of banter about sports. He affectionately gave me the nickname "boom boom" and always made me laugh. He will be missed!

Booby was a dear friend and a great golf partner. He sure loved the game. Last summer he learned of my visit to England for vacation. Having spent some time there, he shared with me all the sites and spots I needed to see while there. What a nice addition to our trip. He will be missed. Skip Evans
