Souvenirs

Robert John Falk, beloved father, brother, partner, and friend, passed away on October 22, 2020 after a brave two-year battle with lung cancer. He was 65 years old. Bob was born on September 11, 1955 to Lois and Alvin Falk and spent his childhood in Waukesha, WI. He remained close with his three siblings Kathleen, Mary and Mike throughout his life, with whom he shared many fond memories of Wisconsin state fair cream puffs, puzzles, and 50/50 soda. A proud badger, Bob earned a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison before moving to Maryland in 1985 with Carol, where they built a family centered around their three children and his beloved Irish Setter Mango. Bob's 40+ years in nuclear engineering brought him a multitude of interesting experiences, places and people, from frigid upper state New York to Mississippi, where he met Keisha. His career would ultimately conclude in a way no one saw coming- working for the federal government. He was most proud of his three children Suzanne, Katie, and Ted, his Green Bay Packers stock, and his eight years and counting of sobriety. He lived for live music, watching storms roll in, cheering on Georgetown basketball, good food, and traveling. In the years before his death, he summited the Patagonia Mountains with his daughter Katie and checked salmon fishing in Alaska off the bucket list with the help of his sister Kathy and son Ted in between cancer treatments. The fish weren't biting but as they say, some of the best fishing memories are the ones where you don't catch anything. His kiddos would like everyone to know that their dad fought and kept his characteristically stubborn attitude until the end. They want their Daddy'O to know they love him and will always think of him, especially at Christmas. They will hang his old-fashioned colored Christmas lights, play Bing Crosby, and wrap presents in newspaper in his honor. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his family Ted, Katie, Suzanne, Keisha, Kathy, Mary, Mike, and a smattering of Falks and Slatterys. His ashes will be spread next to his mother's at a nature center in Wisconsin, as were his wishes.

Bob and I met around 1994. He was a business colleague at first, but we became close friends. We had many great experiences together, but here are a few highlights. Cathy (my wife) and I attended a number of summertime Falk brat-fests. Cathy was honored to be 'best of the wurst' one year. She still has her shirt! Bob and I traveled extensively together for work. A few notable memories...starting with our trip to Cape Town, South Africa in 1995 or so, shortly after Mandela became president. During the 1 1/2 week stay, we toured the countryside and traveled to the top of Table Mountain in a cable car together. A funny story that Bob and I often recalled from that trip was that at dinner shortly after arriving, our server recognized us as Americans and (since the trial of the century was on-going), they asked us if we thought OJ was guilty. It was only then we realized that kind of news out of America is broadcast to all corners of the earth. Ugh! A little later in '95, Bob, Carol and I traveled to Paris, again on business where we all experienced the Parisian cuisine and walked the Champs de Elysee. Our rooms overlooked the Seine, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower was visible in the distance. Perhaps my favorite memory of my travels with Bob was at the end of a job at Wisconsin Electric, we nearly missed our plane back to DC from Milwaukee (they were literally locking the doors to the runway) because we'd made a side trip to Usinger's for bratwurst. I grew up in Michigan, but that's when I learned that no self-respecting cheese-head can E-V-E-R enter the city of Milwaukee without a visit to Usinger's. We'd catch another flight, if necessary, but we'd NEVER miss Usinger's. LOL. Gosh the memories don't end there...from seeing lots of concerts together...to cookouts at our apartment in Mississippi (where we were working a job together there too)...to sharing heartfelt discussions about life, children, relationships, and so on. Bob truly was one of the best friends I had. I'm really going to miss him.

What we remember about Bob when he was married to Larry's sister was his smile and continuous up beat demeanor. We had many good times in the earlier years with him and the family. One thing I do know about him is that his 3 kids meant the world to him through thick and thin. Thinking of you. Our Love, Uncle Larry and Aunt Karen

Dear Suzanne, Katie and Ted, what a beautiful and loving writeup you've created in memory of your Dad. You have done him proud! Our favorite memories of your Dad were at the wonderful Octoberfests especially at the house on Esworthy. He was such a great host and always so happy during those fun filled parties, dishing out his brats! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time, you took such fantastic care of your Dad whenever he needed you, so we hope knowing this, is of some comfort to you at this difficult time. Love, Nancy and John
