Chris had the most engaging smile of anyone I know in graduate school. It was because his sense of humor was so strange and attractive. He found what was cool and weird and just about everything and didn’t take everything entirely seriously at the same time. He was somehow both, to me, deeply medieval and ironic at the same time. And of course, he had serious things to say. I loved talking to Chris about music most of all. I looked up to his opinion about rock ‘n’ roll and its history in every conversation. He what’s the kind of person who would draw you to eerie parallels between, like, The Beach Boys and Godspeed You Black Emperor, and despite overwhelming odds, correctly defended Animals as Pink Floyd‘s best album. His record collection is inseparable from my memory of him. Hopkins denying Chris tenure was one of the great injustices I have personally known, and I have never stopped being angry about it. It’s not just that Cris is brilliant scholarship and citizenship were not given their due. It’s that Chris was actually the humanist you want to have a beer with in the humanity-challenged academy. Chris was your friend, never your frenemy, and someone I wished would be my colleague forever.

I valued Chris as a scholar and a colleague. I first met him at Kalamazoo, many years ago when I was ABD, where he was giving a paper, and I distinctly remember how cool, calm, and collected (and smart) he was - he was a model for us younger scholars. Reading Sculptural Seeing gave me another model for how to compose and draft a sharp, thoughtful monograph. I fondly recall the two of us getting scolded by the guards at the Abegg-Stiftung, in Riggisberg, for sneaking photos in the galleries. He is already missed by the field.

My time in graduate school wouldn’t have been nearly as fun without Chris. He became the social coordinator for our year’s cohort, and often hosted us at his place. In our first semester, he decided that we should have a group meeting every week the night before our methods seminar to go over the readings, but we always ended up just hanging out. Chris was very good at converting stress into jokes and competition into community. He made me laugh all the time. I’ll never forget his smile or the almost-cartoonish face he made when he thought something was absurd. He was the perfect mix of nerdy and cool just by being himself. As a scholar, it was always evident how passionate he was about the art he studied — he was an art historian for all the right reasons. He was also a caring friend who showed up when we needed him. I can’t believe he’s gone.

At I Tatti, we remember Chris with enormous fondness. He was a gifted scholar, a wonderful colleague, and a dear friend whose kindness, humor, and generosity enriched our community in many ways. We also remember with great happiness the fellowship year he and Sarah spent in Florence, and the joy of welcoming the birth of their son during that time. We are deeply saddened by Chris’s passing and he will forever hold a special place in the I Tatti family.
