Prince Rogers Nelson

Compassion is an action word with no boundaries.
Prince Rogers Nelson was a musical genius whose boundless creativity and virtuosity redefined popular music. Born on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to jazz singer Mattie Della Shaw and pianist John Lewis Nelson, Prince was literally born into music. Named after his father's stage name "Prince Rogers," he inherited not just a name but an extraordinary gift that would transform him into one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
Prince's childhood was marked by both hardship and prodigy. His parents divorced when he was ten, and he moved between households while navigating the challenges of epileptic seizures that lasted until age seven. Yet music became his refuge and his calling. At seven, he began playing the piano his father left behind. By his early teens, he had taught himself guitar and drums, practicing obsessively in the music room at Central High School after even quitting the basketball team to dedicate more time to his craft.
At nineteen, Prince signed a groundbreaking contract with Warner Bros. Records in 1977, having astonished executives by producing, arranging, composing, and performing every instrument on his demo tapes. His 1978 debut album "For You" showcased this remarkable versatility, featuring Prince on all 27 instruments. But it was his 1982 album "1999" that introduced him to mainstream audiences, followed by the seismic impact of "Purple Rain" in 1984. The album spent 24 consecutive weeks at number one, sold over 25 million copies worldwide, and earned Prince an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.
Throughout his career, Prince released 39 studio albums and composed over 900 songs, blending funk, rock, R&B, pop, and psychedelic sounds into a genre-defying sonic tapestry. He founded Paisley Park Records and built Paisley Park Studios, where he mentored artists and maintained complete creative control. His flamboyant stage presence, androgynous persona, and uncompromising artistic vision challenged conventions and inspired generations of musicians.
Prince was married twice, first to backup dancer Mayte Garcia and later to Manuela Testolini. He experienced profound personal tragedy when his son Amiir died one week after birth in 1996.
On April 21, 2016, Prince died unexpectedly at Paisley Park from an accidental fentanyl overdose while managing chronic pain. He was 57 years old. His legacy endures in every artist who dares to push boundaries, in every musician who refuses to be confined by genre, and in the more than 100 million records that continue to inspire fans worldwide.
