Recuerdos

Phoenix McKay Phippen passed away on September 14, 2024, as he ran in the outdoors he loved so much, and with dirt beneath his fingernails. He was surrounded by friends and his parents, who loved him to the moon. He was 3-years-old.

Three years, three months, and seven days is too short a time for anyone to live. But Phoenix knew how to squeeze joy from every minute. There was not a puddle within eyesight that he did not splash, often against his parents’ advice. There was not a beetle in his Glorieta, New Mexico, yard that he did not touch as he admiringly cooed, “Oh, he’s so cute. I love him.” Phoenix was magic because he saw magic in the mundane. Bandits lurked behind each tree, and he vowed to take them all to jail. A rock, be it driveway gravel or a polished stone, held supernatural potential. “Look! A dinosaur egg,” he’d yell with excitement and in total belief that it would, if placed on the table beside the front door, someday hatch.

He was a nature child, often naked outdoors save for his blue and green crocs as he ran through the tall grass. He loved to poop in the yard. He admired wildflowers, and he’d present them to his mother as he gently rubbed the purple or yellow petals against his face, saying, “Look, mommy, it’s so pretty.” He was also a wonderful helper. He picked groceries from the aisle with his mom, and when dad needed to dig a hole, Phoenix shouted, “Oh, I need to get my tools. Be right back!” And he’d grunt as he dug beside his father with a plastic shovel, pressing one foot against the blade like dad showed him.

For such a young boy, Phoenix held an astounding vocabulary. He taught his parents the difference between a Brachiosaurus and a Dilophosaurus, speaking each syllable clearly, and he warned of the dishonest nature of the Velocisaurus. He especially loved adjectives. An earth worm was incredible. When he wore his “lightning shoes” he could run super, super fast, and indeed he could. The monster truck or backhoe toys he slept beside were huge or enormous, even though they fit in his tiny hand.

His mother and father will miss filling his mouth with whipped cream. They will miss reading him three books every night, and how he had often memorized and would finish the last words of each page. They will miss the dance parties, so many dance parties, to the Talking Heads, to Rage Against the Machine, to the Monster Truck Song, to AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck”—or, as Phoenix would say, “The Thunder Song.” They will miss his sweet calls to build a “compy” nest, to play race cars in Car City, or to help dig sand with his many, many construction vehicles. He was a connoisseur of heavy machinery.

His mother, most of all, will miss his cuddles. She will miss the nights she rubbed his brows as he looked into her eyes, repeating, “I love you, mom.” He was her rainbow child.

A service to memorialize the short but super, enormous and joyful life of Phoenix McKay Phippen will be held on September 28, 2024, in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Pez and Bowie

Phoenix befriended my son, Bowie, at school. Bowie was the new kid, nervous and a little shy, but Phoenix knew exactly how to distract him from the anxiety of a new experience with trucks and games and dino facts. I will always carry a special place for Phoenix, for the kindness he showed my son, and am immensely grateful to his parents for sharing this truly special child with us. Bowie and I will honor Phoenix by continuing to spread the joy and kindness he showed us and others. Jaime and Weston, you are in our thoughts, always.

Konstance (Konnie) Kurrle

Jaime and Weston, I cannot fathom what you both are going through. Your tribute describes him so vividly and makes you feel like you are right there outside running right along side of him and listening to him describe all his dinosaurs. I never met Phoenix in person but I will never EVER forget the day Gina and I went shopping for him, picking each gift so thoughtfully and saying what he'd think (like we knew him) and brought the gifts to your house and spent the afternoon admiring your new landscaping, meeting Weston, talking baby names, and just enjoying a beautiful May afternoon prior to his birth. You both wanted and enjoyed Phoenix to the fullest - watching you throughout your pregnancy, hearing about him when we would get to speak or Teams each other, watching videos of him dancing in his diaper, and two weeks prior we talked about how he was growing into a little man! I love you both so much and pay such a high tribute to you as loving parents and pay tribute to him. God, of course, needs him for something much bigger and I can't wait to find what that was someday. My thoughts and my prayers are with you both. My love and sincere condolences to both of you. I only wish I could be there to do whatever you need or want - whatever that may be. Love, Konnie

Jaime and Weston, our hearts break for you. Your deep love for Phoenix was so apparent to everyone who knew your family. Phoenix will forever be Remy’s first ever best friend, and I couldn’t have imagined a better fellow adventurer or a more kindred spirit. Phoenix, Remy, and Charlie were such a close trio, it was a long hard wait over the summer for Remy for Phoenix and Charlie to finally join him in the “big kids” class. One morning I heard chants of “big Remy! Big Remy!” only to look over and see Phoenix and Charlie beaming with joy to see their friend from behind the little playground fence. (Remy would often run over to them and they’d have chats through the fence.) On the day Phoenix finally moved up classes, we arrived in the morning to see him happily assembling blocks on the little patio. Remy lit up with absolute joy and sprinted over, shouting “SEE-NIX!!!” at the top of his lungs - and Phoenix instantly straightened up and bounced in his chair, grinning from ear to ear, so full of excitement. The gift of Phoenix in Remy’s class again was like a little Christmas Day. Like Charlie’s mom, I was always relieved when we saw Phoenix at the playground when we got to school because I knew Phoenix would help ease Remy’s transition to school with a ready invite into his adventures - whether with trucks, diggers, dinos, blocks, or a wild sprinting, climbing, sliding up and down and all around. On hard mornings, Remy’s big sister would join us in encouraging him out the door with “Phoenix will be at school, Remy! You’ll get to play with Phoenix!” Some mornings everyone in our car was cheering “Phoenix!!!” when we spotted him on the playground as we arrived. Remy is cherishing his many Phoenix memories: climbing up and down the slide in their bare feet, clambering up the juniper trees, and one I hadn’t heard yet - he says: “Me and Phoenix don’t want to go to rest time. We want to keep playing outside.” Then, in a solemn tone, shaking his head: “We want to stay outside but we can’t. It is time for rest time.” I also remember just a few weeks ago, when I was picking up Remy, the kids had been collecting pinyons together. Charlie, Phoenix, and Remy all excitedly ran up to me. Remy told me to hold out my hand and dumped a handful in, and before I could react another little hand appeared and slipped a few more onto the pile on my palm. I looked up and it was Phoenix - he smiled shyly at me, a brightness in his eyes, and I was so touched. It was as if he wanted to share his bounty with me, too. Remy cried very very hard for Phoenix. He misses him deeply and we do too. His generous, adventurous, joyful spirit was such a gift to Remy and to all of us who knew him. We are all better off for having known Phoenix, and we will remember him and miss him forever. Sending all our love, Remy, Cecilia, Scott, and Nika

Bryan, Becca, Lulu, Teddy, and Lena Anderson

Jaime and Weston, I remember the first photos of Phoenix after his birth and watching him grow into a sweet, smiling boy. I always remember the little play date we had with Teddy, baby Lena, and Phoenix in the park with all the overgrown grass. He lit up whenever he looked at his mom. All of our love and support is with you, Phoenix was visibly and deeply loved and adored.
