A.N. Philipose, dearly known as Papa, Appacha and Babychayan, was known by all as a gentle and caring person. He was faithful to God till the end, despite the many challenges he faced in life.

He was faithful and supportive of his family in the midst of trials, providing for all their needs through sacrificial and selfless love. He was a loving and devoted husband to our mother, Annamma Philipose. As children we fondly remember how Papa would help Mummy in the kitchen and many other ways in which he showed how much he loved and cared for her. He was a loving father and a proud parent, almost to a fault, bragging about our little achievements as if we were the President of the United States or the Queen of England.

His ability to connect with different kinds of people across age groups and cultures truly set him apart. He welcomed his daughters-in-law from different cultures with open arms. When there was a decision to adopt a child into the family, Papa was not only supportive, he went all out to show his joy in that family decision. His first daughter-in-law, Sudha, says "I will always remember the man with twinkling eyes and gentle ways who welcomed me into your family with a hot cup of fabulous chai."

He gave us all a rich heritage of trust and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. One of his favourite songs was "Dukhatinte Panapathram" where one of the verses says

"Kashtanashtam erivannal bhagyavaanayi theerunnu njan Kashtametta Karthavodu, koottaliyaayi theerunnu njan"

It means our suffering is actually an opportunity for us to share in the suffering endured by Our Lord Jesus Christ, echoing the truth of Scripture.

He was gentle but influential in his workplace, through his diligent work ethic, his ability to win the trust of his seniors and the favour of God. He was a trailblazer, being the first in his family to leave the comfort zone of home and moving to a new land with a language he was not familiar with. Later, he helped many make that transition, helping them move from Kerala and tap job opportunities in the city of Pune.

He cultivated the culture of an open home, even with a small home. His home was open for all, and many have stayed there while finding their feet in a new city and culture.

Even on his death bed, he welcomed visitors. He was not consumed by his own suffering; he carried in his heart the many people God had put in his life. He prayed for everyone by name. When his nephew Joe asked him what is his message for the family, he said, "During this evening time, I praise you, My God. Bless all those who are dear to me." During his life, his eventide, his death, Papa showed us the way of trust, faithfulness and selfless love. We are so grateful for him. Thank you Papa!

Appacha was so gentle, caring and loving. He loved spending time with all of his family. Every day if we asked appacha how he was he used to say "same as yesterday". He would never tell us about the large amount of pain he endured everyday. That's something I admire about appacha..He never complained about the many struggles in his life. I loved listening to appachas stories from when he was a child. Just recently we were looking at old pictures of appacha and he had such a sweet smile even though he had so much pain. I also admire the way appacha used to maintain relationships with people far and wide. He used to make an effort to stay in touch with people. Appacha was loved and will be missed by so many people. He has helped and supported so many people throughout their lives. I will miss appachas birthday collages a lot and his presence during important occasions. I'm so glad that I was able to spend time and have memories with Appacha. -Aliza ❤️

When I think of Appacha what comes to mind is this quiet, steady, gentle, faithful man. A man who did not draw attention to himself but stepped in to encourage and help others around him when needed. As the oldest son, he certainly carried the responsibility and helped his siblings. He helped my dad settle in Pune and find a job. In fact, he helped many people find jobs with his influence in early years of the Malayalee community in Pune. He stood with others in their suffering and in his he trusted God's goodness. Over the years with his accident and his knees growing weak he continued to be cheerful and loving. In his last weeks, even when he was physically exhausted and there were very few words, he face lit up and smiled when I mentioned people names and how they were doing. He genuinely loved people. He inherited the best from his parents, a strong and steady spirit from valiya Appacha and a loving spirit from valiya Amachi. May we receive the best from his life and legacy as we celebrate his homegoing to rest that is promised. Hebrews 4:9-10 The promise of "arrival" and "rest" is still there for God's people. God himself is at rest. And at the end of the journey we'll surely rest with God.

Appacha was the most gentle soul I have met. It has been my joy to know you all my life. You made an effort to stay in touch even though it’s been almost seven years now that we have met in person. He was blessed and a blessing leaving behind a godly legacy. John 11:25-26 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.

Babychayan was the corner stone of our family. We survived in Pune because of his constant prayers and support. My foundest memory about him is how he used to remember everyone on a daily basis and also was the first to wish everyone on thier special days. He has left behind a void in our family. May his soul rest in peace.
