Pete Patterson

Peter Bruce Patterson, Ottawa, Ontario—process control engineer, artist and friend—died on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, after the swift and terminal onset of cancer. Pete was 63 years old. Pete was born July 3, 1960, to Donald and Muriel, in Bracebridge, Ontario. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. He grew up in North Bay, and studied Process Control at Canadore College. In the mid-1990s, he moved to Ottawa to take a job at QNX Software Systems. A true technology enthusiast, Pete excelled at everything he put his mind to and was often found Pioneering at the forefront of new technologies and ideas. He was fascinated by technology and art. He wasn't afraid to do things his own way, like working from home before anyone knew what that was, making his own hours, and taking advantage of his late night creativity and inspiration. Self-taught and self-motivated, he never let society's artificial barriers, like degrees or training, get in the way of pursuing the careers he wanted. Pete was valued as a friend and mentor, who gave generously of his time to novice makers and artists, often tutoring others. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his enthusiasm, charm, quick wit and skill by all those close to him. We express our sincere gratitude to the Ottawa Hospital at-home Supportive and Palliative Care team, Ottawa Home and Community Care Support Services, and St Elizabeth Health Care. We also thank Kelly Funeral Home–Somerset Chapel. Deep enough gratitude cannot be expressed for those who helped Pete in every way, in his darkest hour. At Pete’s request, his body has been bequeathed to the University of Ottawa, Department of Innovation and Medical Education; upon completion of studies, ashes will be interred at Pinecrest Cemetery. Each June there is a non-denominational memorial service held by the University of Ottawa at the Pinecrest Chapel honouring all those who have donated. A gathering of friends will be held on July 20, 2023, 7:00 p.m., at Beyond the Pale, 250 City Centre Avenue, in Ottawa.
