Message from Peter Bonanno: Paula was such a special person. Warm, caring, unpretentious, brilliant, tenacious, decisive - just a few of the attributes that come immediately to mind. She had a kind and generous spirit, and a laugh and a smile that would light up a room. I remember so vividly how warmly Paula greeted me when I joined the team in 2012 and how she always went out of her way to make visitors to Hong Kong (myself included!) feel so welcomed. During our six years as colleagues, I always marveled at how Paula went about her work and, more importantly, how she treated those around her. Paula was kind, empathetic, and supportive, while also being driven, impactful, and determined. Paula was focused on her work and delivered outstanding results, yet she did not let her professional career define who she was. She led by example and served as a role model to so many colleagues. Paula also had a wonderful sense of humor that often had the effect of diffusing tense moments and reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously when grappling with the issues of the day. In sum, Paula was both a consummate professional and one of the most decent and genuine individuals I've ever met. I feel so fortunate to have known this exceptional person. I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Paula's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. May the wonderful memories of your wife, mother, sister, and friend be a blessing.

Message from Andreas Schlafer I met PauIa for the first time almost 10 years ago when she was in Munich for a leadership program. Since then, we have worked together on several complex and difficult projects (Sale of our Korean business, Moving somebody to China, Global Distribution matters etc.). Paula ALWAYS had a good and efficient solution for our highly complex problems. She was a legal professional with a true business mindset. Apart from that, she was one of the most friendly colleagues I have ever worked with. You could have real fun with Paula even on the most difficult projects. I am very sad to hear about her passing. I will include Paula and her family in my prayers. Andreas

When I came to Hong Kong in 2015 Paula impressed me right from the start. It was not her capabilities as a lawyer, which were clearly impressive as well. It was rather her character and personality: I experienced her as reflective but confident, strong but vulnerable, having a great humor but controlled, caring for people and caring for business, always wanting to understand the big picture and prepared to take responsibility as a senior manager of the firm. The weekly meetings with her were so valuable and meaningful and very important to me. We were always there for each other when something bothered us business wise. She was a true partner who enriched my professional life at AllianzGI beyond words. She talked a lot about her kids and Paula was clearly a role model for so many female colleagues who struggle to balance the career and the private life. Her decision to give up the very promising career path at AllianzGI and to move to Toronto was very brave and a reminder to so many of us what really matters in life. I am so sad about her sudden loss and cannot believe it still. For the family I hope that you will get through this difficult time and I am sure that Paula is watching and taking care of you from above.

I met Paula almost twenty years ago through a common friend who thought it was a good idea for us to link up given we both graduated from Osgoode and lived in Hong Kong. My impression of Paula then was someone who was very kind, gentle and humble but also motivated and practical. Over the years, our paths continued to cross whether as alumni and gathering with common friends or because we ended up doing similar legal work for different asset management companies. We would trade notes on what certain CSRC rules meant or best practices for a legal team set-up. Probably sounds mundane but I treasured having a warm trusted resource to bounce ideas off of. I had the privilege of joining Paula's team at AllianzGI in 2016 and got to see another side of her. As a boss, she was fair and wise, she was able to focus on important issues and prioritize between a multitude of matters. She was always calm and organized and knew when to delegate and when to step in when her guidance was needed. She was tough and decisive but never failed to communicate with a pleasant and professional demeanor. Amidst all this, my impression of Paula did not change one bit, she was still the kind, gentle and humble person that I knew from before. It was a bit of a surprise when Paula decided to leave AllianzGi to return to Toronto in 2018. It was sad to see her go but I knew our paths would cross again. Returning to Toronto was something that also featured in my plans and we even joked that Paula would open her own practice in Toronto and hire me as a junior partner. I thought we had years of friendship ahead of us. When I moved back to Toronto in 2020, as expected, Paula was extremely generous and supportive offering lots of information and tips and passing on resources to make my transition smooth. My biggest regret is that whenever I came back to Toronto to visit these few years before moving back, Paula would offer for me to stay with her family. I declined and stayed at a hotel instead. I wish I could have spent more time with her and enjoyed her company. I also regret that because of COVID lockdowns, we never got to see each other since I moved back to Toronto. I kept saying, let's wait to see if the situation improves around Christmas, and then, after Chinese New Year; but it never happened. Paula, I will miss you. I know our paths will cross again, just maybe not on this earth. I look forward to seeing your radiant smile in heaven.
