Paul Hawryluk
7 de febrero de 1970 - 16 de diciembre de 2020
7 de febrero de 1970 - 16 de diciembre de 2020
Paul M. Hawryluk, 50, of New York City died on Wednesday, December 16 of natural causes. Paul was born ten minutes before his twin sister Christa to Carla M. and Theodore Hawryluk.
Paul grew up in Bedford, NY and was graduated in 1988 from The Loomis Chafee School, where he was known for his biting wit, sophisticated humor, and hearty laugh. In 1992, Paul received a B.A. from Emory University, where he was a beloved member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, which he served as Social Chair, delighting many with his creativity, including his annual “smog, nog, and grog” party.
In 1995, he was graduated from Tulane University with a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies. Though he adored New Orleans, he made his home in New York. A quintessential New Yorker, he loved walking and exploring the city and sharing his off-the-beaten-path finds with friends and family. He worked for many years in the photography department of the Condé Nast Archive, and enjoyed this work immensely, and later at Bergen Interiors, a small design firm.
Paul’s friends and family remember him warmly as the life and vibrant color of every event – an inventor of fun. He was especially fond of Mardi Gras and Halloween, creating clever costumes that often, to his dismay, left lesser mortals stumped as to their meaning. Paul was a talented artist and writer. He loved creating witty personalized birthday cards for friends and family, which they cherish, and children’s books featuring a talking pug for himself and his friends to enjoy. Paul was well read and well informed and enjoyed sharing up-to-the-minute news. He expertly turned eloquent phrases and enlivened conversations with witty quotes from his heroines Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, C.Z. Guest, or one of the Golden Girls. Paul loved to travel, and his most recent dream was to attend Carnival in Brazil.
Paul is survived by his loving mother, Carla M. Hawryluk of Bedford; by his dear sister Christa H. Collins (Jeff), his niece Phoebe and nephew Theo, whom he adored, all of Concord, MA. In addition to large circles of Emory and Tulane friends, he was cherished in Manhattan and on Fire Island by many, and the diaspora of those touched by his friendship and sense of fun extends from Berlin to Capetown to Hawaii and many places in between.

I was taking a trip down memory lane when I found this sad news. I considered Paul a close friend in my youth, we attended both Bedford elementary and Rippowam together. I will always remember his wit and artistic talent. I have vivid memories of the day he invited me over afterschool and conspiratorially told me he'd discovered how to "make things appear and disappear" on the new video camera he had at the house. I remember getting in trouble because we filmed a "bewitched" scene in which a fire magically appeared in the fire place... lighting a fire when no one was home! I think we were 12? 11? one of many memories I have of Paul, our small group of friends at Ripp... (there are some stories there...lol... that's for sure) I got teary eyed at just the mention of his love of Lucy Ball above, which he had even then. I can hear him ribbing me a little for saying so. and Christa, I know you'll not likely remember me, but we were all in Mrs. Arden's (1st grade? maybe second grade?) class together. I'm sorry for your loss, I regret that I began my journey to reconnect too late.

I had inadvertently let Paul's website lapse but have finally managed to get it up and running again. You can see his amazing illustrations at olliebooks.com.

I was very sad to see that Paul has left us. I got the Loomis mag today and read that he passed. I haven’t seen him since graduation 88’ but the memories will never fade. He was a hell of a lot of fun to be with and we had lots of crazy times. I was lucky enough to be Paul’s roommate our senior year and he was a real character for sure. The world was wayyy better with Paul here. RIP buddy. You made boarding school fun. Here is a photo I just found of Paul and fellow friend/classmate Kathy Williamson. Peace Sandro

Thinking of Paul today and every day. This past year has been so challenging but made easier by the many wonderful memories and love shared by his friends. In many ways I feel I know Paul better now than I did when he was living, which heightens the feelings of loss and regret, but also makes me appreciate his talent and unique personality even more. If you’re out there somewhere, Paul, you are so loved.

Really sorry to hear about Paul’s passing - we attended both Loomis and Emory together and while he was in a different social group and a year after me, our paths crossed often whether in the dorms at Loomis or at Emory parties. He was always himself and comfortable wherever he was. It’s really sad that he’s left so early, as the world was a better place with him. He will be missed.

Thank you for including me in the Celebration of Paul's life. What an incredible tribute. Hearing the stories immediately took me back 30 years to when I knew Paul at Emory. The themes weaving through all of the stories resonated perfectly. Brilliant, funny, brutal wit, outstanding costumes, and a generous soul. I am embarrassed to admit that he and I lost touch in the years after college, but it was so nice to hear from the people who remained close with him and to know that he was surrounded with love. My heart is with his family and friends.
