Recuerdos

Patricia Marie McCarthy, 67, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026 after a brief illness, surrounded by her family and others she loved just as dearly. She was a devoted mother and grandmother; a loving aunt, godmother, sister and cousin; and a cherished friend to many.

Patricia – known to everyone as ‘Tricia’ – was born on September 13, 1958 in Lansing, MI to Daniel (Pat) and Mary McCarthy. A proud Michigander, she spent most of her life in Lansing and it is where she raised ‘her boys’. For a brief period, she lived with her family in Coleraine, Northern Ireland – an experience she still found deeply rewarding decades later. Upon her return she held a variety of jobs and in the later stages of her career worked with the Michigan chapter of the National Association of Social Workers – an organization whose mission and people were meaningful to her. In everything she did, personal or professional, her work ethic was plainly evident. She set the standard for working mothers, stretching pennies with aplomb and often with a sense of humor. Yet she was never too busy to be involved in her community, volunteering for causes she thought were important. She found just as much meaning in her life outside of work – as a mother and homemaker, daughter and caretaker, friend and ally.

She was a creative person with eclectic tastes and appreciated peculiar things, especially giving kitschy cards and gifts to people for a laugh. She was a gracious host and phenomenal cook, with a knack for elevating gatherings with little touches that were never pretentious. The crafts she made for people’s Christmas gifts and her Chex Mix each had a cult following. Tricia celebrated the differences in people and so many of the things she enjoyed were about supporting someone else in their own passions – particularly taking an interest in the music and art of those close to her. She was a voracious reader and loved following all things politics. She was a great listener and could always be counted on to pick up the phone when you needed to talk.

Tricia was an unflinchingly loyal person: a rock to her family and friends, though God help you if you ever got on the wrong side of her. She valued authenticity and loved people for who they were. Tricia cared deeply about social equity and sticking up for the little guy. She lived her values far more than she preached them and would be the first one to open her heart, her home or her checkbook whenever she thought someone could use the help.

Tricia is survived by her two sons, Rob and Chris Byerly; her grandchildren, Kristina and Nick Byerly; her sister Liz and sister-in-law Donna (Tim); and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and extended family members she loved just as much. She is preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Dan, Tim and Bridget.

A remembrance and celebration of her life is being planned for later this fall. Details on the date, time and location will be shared as soon as they're finalized. In the meantime, the family welcomes your memories and extends its gratitude for the overwhelming messages of support.

Dear Rob and Chris, What a beautiful tribute to your mom. I hope your families are healing each day from your loss. I met Tricia in the 7th grade at Otto Jr. High. We both were from families that read the newspaper from cover to cover so we had much to debate about and loved to skip out for lunch to nipnsip! I will always think of Tricia as the person who was the most fun to be with at football games, at school dances and many concerts we attended together throughout high school and college. I don't know if you know but our 10th grade class built our train float in your grandparents garage - so not only did everyone in our class know Tricia but we knew both of your grandparents as well! Tricia was outspoken, humanistic and funny. She was an excellent writer. We often saw each other when I came to Lansing to visit. We both were big fans of Ireland, her second home and for me a favorite travel spot. We were both political junkies of the same elke. I think I might have been the first Jewish person Tricia knew and although I don't represent all the viewpoints of Jewish people - your mom would often call me to find out what I was thinking about the Middle East, anti-semitism, etc. I loved your mom and have so, so many fond memories being together. I hope all these wonderful memories of Tricia, your mom, will ease your grief. She loved live so! Attached please find pictures of your mom in striped shirt hanging out my car - "the banana" going to a football pep rally, college Halloween Party, Tricia, Julie Carr and me. and the last one is Lisa Crumley, Tricia and I more recently visiting on one of my trips to Lansing

My condolences to Tricia’s family. I only knew Tricia as NASW staff. A constant trusted name that I always saw in print that made feel there was stability at the State office. The one time I spoke with Tricia she was so polite and patient. She told me to call back if things didn’t work out. May she rest peacefully. 🪽

I bought the Carriage Hill House in 2016. Tricia and I became good friends immediately. Your grandfather was an artist and arborist. I repeatedly called Tricia to help identify all the beautiful trees. Also to get advice on the sculpture in the backyard. We would get together talk and laugh. She watched the house evolve. She gave me a couple pieces of art that I had professionally mounted. I love them and will remember Tricia Always.

I am so saddened to read of Tricia’s passing. She was a guest of mine in my styling chair for many, many years and truly one of my favorite people to spend time with. She always gave the best advice, shared many stories, and was so gracious. Her love for her grandkids was so loud and her sons, she spoke of you all every visit. She will be so missed!

I’m so sad to learn about Tricia’s passing. She has been a dear friend since we met working at Michigan National Bank. Nearly 50 years. Holy cow (as she would say). Though we haven’t been in touch as often since I moved to Arizona, she has always been in my thoughts and heart. I cherish the times we have seen each other in my trips back to Michigan over the years. Rob and Chris: I wish you peace and healing. If there’s anything I can do to help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. My number is 602-247-0184. I hope to be able to make it to the celebration of life in the fall. Love, Jan
