When Nick first entered the Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore, the elevated steps forced him — like all visitors there — to lower his head and look down to show humility. For Nick, being humble and modest was easy, so he proceeded on to marvel at the Chinese architecture and how the original temple was built without a single nail. Awed by one of Singapore’s oldest Chinese temples, Nick decided to make an amateur documentary about it. Prior to that, he had made several others such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Electric Buddhist Monastery in Thailand and a snapshot of life in Kuala Lumpur. Once stricken by dysentery in southern India, Nick was nursed back to health by a doctor who had built a hospital for the poor in a jungle village. In return, Nick filmed the doctor to document his work in the local community and his passion for art and music. Nick was always more comfortable behind a camera than in front of one. He loved the research, travel and production aspects of making videos and wanted to do many more in retirement from his day job as an engineer. He had the skills, schooled in broadcast communications as well as electrical, computer and video engineering. But he simply needed the time. Closer to home, in Pasadena, he would journey out on walks to the mountains of Santa Monica or San Gabriel or the desert of Anza Borrego to find inspiration for his next international project and peace of mind. The Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore was built for the worship of Mazu, a Taoist sea goddess. Perhaps she is guiding Nick to a safe passage.

I recall Nick's first day at LABC. Our manager walked him over to my cubicle and said "John, this is Nick and you both are now the media engineers and support group, so walk him around and show what the heck he is in for” LOL! It was intimidating to us at first what with the studio expansion and tons of equipment being installed, but we nailed it and had fun in doing so. The thing that made such a challenge enjoyable was working alongside Nick. We’d hit a wall with a random complicated issue, and I am ready to stop for the night, but somehow, he’d talk me into staying to try one more thing and often the system that was offline would be up and running. “It is the best job in broadcasting” he would say. Those were good times for sure and I miss them. When told of his passing it was hard to imagine that Nick was gone as we had spoke not but a week before while he was out exploring the desert. Such is life. So long my friend and until we meet again may God bless you and your family.

I did not know you well, Nicholas, but you certainly lived an amazing life and brought the gifts of the world to many who viewed your work. God Bless You.
Evan Calford
My name is Evan Calford and I worked with Nicholas for many years and really got to know him well. Nic always surprised me with the amount of dedication he had to be an effective engineer here at Directv. The number of hours he put in on evenings and weekends to prepare himself for the challenges he faced, without pay no less, always had me scratching my head and we talked often about it. Nic was one of the few people I know that have that "Crest Mount Everest without oxygen" attitudes. I have a lot of respect for Nicholas and frankly can't believe he's not here. I am missing him, his sense of humor, his professionalism and his sometimes hilarious temper. He will be sorely missed here at LABC by all that benefited from his presence and I hold him in my thoughts going forward. See you on the other side Nic.
