Souvenirs

Proches

It is with broken hearts that we advise our eldest daughter, Niamh Tara O’Brien (22) passed away this Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021.  She is survived and will be forever loved by us, Brendan and Colleen her parents, her siblings Cara & Aoife, her maternal grandparents Jim & Esther, as well as her aunties, uncles, and cousins.

Niamh had long battled anxiety and depression but was radiant through it all.  Troubling early teen years led to a softer time when our wonderful daughter blossomed into the beautiful adult childhood had promised.  Always the caring friend her concern was for the well-being of others; neither revealing nor sharing her own challenges with those who cared most for her.  As one friend put it “She was bright, kind, wise, genuine, and sweet; she had a beautiful soul and will be deeply missed.”

Niamh had registered as an organ donor some time back and on the form declared, “Save Lives!”  She did.

We are at a loss for words, so we ask you for yours; your pictures, your stories, and your thoughts to share.

We loved having Niamh.  She will be missed each day we live.

A private family memorial service was held and will be shared through this website.  A grander affair for friends and family will be held later, in the autumn, nearer Niamh's birthday.  We hope gatherings will be allowed at that time.

In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to support the Odyssey I program where she was a solid facilitator, having such presence that held youths’ attention:  https://www.bgcbc.ca/donate/  Note:  Please complete the message box below your donation so your gift will be directed towards Niamh’s memory.  For assistance with your donation email Deborah at: dcushing@bgcbc.ca.

Dear Aoife and the O’Brien Family, I had the good fortune of teaching your sister and daughter English in her ninth grade. Niamh was a thoughtful, caring, and perceptive student and a valued member of the class. I am so very sorry that Niamh is gone and my thoughts are with you. “We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world--the company of those who have known suffering.” — Helen Keller Barbara Mushens Burnaby North teacher “

Brendan, Colleen, Cara, Aoife and beloved family and dear friends, I can do so little of consequence for you but I will share what I can that may take you to a time and place for your hearts to sing for a moment. We were so fortunate to have met your girls all together with you in the best of places, Doolin, for a bit of craic and a tune and a time where you were bundled together in a snug - may you be ever so. I knew I had at least this one photo that captured a sliver of that evening - that trip - for you all. No doubt you have many, Keeping you in my heart and while knowing there is just nothing at all that can be said, I can pray that you all find a path to some measure of peace in your cherished, cherished memories and in the comfort of one another.

Brendan, Colleen, Cara, Aoife, I am so incredibly sorry to hear about Niamh. I will cherish the memory of seeing Niamh grow from baby size to a young adult size. The Niamh I knew always had a smile and warmth to her. Though we weren't particularly close, we did get to chat a bit at family gatherings including cousin Joanne's wedding. It's an absolute tragedy that we have to say good bye to her so soon and continue on with broken hearts. I spent a couple hours scouring my computer searching for Joanne's wedding photos to see if we caught Niamh in any (no such luck on finding any of them). I know aunt Julie has a couple photos of when she was a baby visiting great grandma Edna. I will help Julie get you a copy (if she hasn't already). Our lives are forever changed. Please know that you are all loved and reach out if you need someone to listen. Rest well Niamh - until we meet again.

Aoife and the O’Brien Family, My deepest condolences for your loss of Niamh. She was a kind, intelligent young woman and she had a smile that could light up a room. “A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.” - Maya Angelou I hope you are all able to soon share stories and smile together as you honour and remember Niamh. Much love, Heather Smith Burnaby North Teacher

This comes with my deepest condolences again to my brother Brendan, also to my sister-in-law Colleen and my nieces Cara and Aoife. Words cannot convey my sorrow at your immeasurable loss. I remember my mum (Niamh's grandmother), also recently passed, would tell me a game she used to play with Niamh. They would both try to push each other off the end of a bench or a couch, moving over inch by inch:) I'm sure they are playing that game together again now. Rest in peace beautiful Niamh.
