Myrtle Tina Wiebe left her body to be with her Lord Jesus on 5 January 2021, at the age of 87.

Myrtle was born on the family farm at Winkler, Manitoba on 4 August 1933 to Henry and Katherina Loewen. She married her best friend David in 1954. Together they raised four sons and a daughter.  Myrtle always considered this the most important work of her life.

Myrtle always enjoyed getting to know new people, and used her people skills in a variety of occupations, including directing a daycare centre, managing a bookstore, marketing, and waitressing.  She also gave herself to volunteer work in and out of the church, serving as a church secretary or Sunday School superintendent, planting churches, leading groups through grief and loss seminars, providing palliative and spiritual care, or trading homes with a young family so that the parents could have a date night.

She also expressed herself through the arts, whether singing as she prepared a family meal or travelled in the car, sewing and knitting, writing, and most recently painting and drawing.

As she goes to her reward, Myrtle joins her parents, her husband David, her son Roger, her grandson Daniel, and siblings Joe, Neta, Henry, Peter, and John. She leaves behind brother Elmer; sister Anne; son Warren and his wife Sandy; son Randall; son Kevin and his wife Beena; daughter Nola; daughter-in-law Fern and her husband Bryan; grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew, Tyler and his wife Kensie, Kemp and his wife Heidi, Tegan and her husband Michael, Christy, and Brent; and great-grandchildren Matthias and Dietrich.

Most of my memories of Myrtle and David were at camp meeting at DVM, having deep spiritual discussions or singing together in harmony upstairs of the dining room. Myrtle always had a strong opinion, I’ll miss her.

"Aunty" Myrtle's faith has a profound effect on me as a Christian woman, in this era where charisma often takes precedence over character. (In Malaysia, we address older men and women as uncles and aunties). I had the privilege to know her up-close through her children; Kevin and Beena our long time friends and church members when they were residing in Malaysia. The deepest lesson I caught from Myrtle is her confidence in God's sovereignty in the pain of losing her first-born son and grandson within the same week. Her indomitable strength brought a supernatural presence of God to all who were grieving alongside the family. She didn't just love the gospel but she lived the gospel; which was evident in releasing three of her boys to cross-cultural mission; Roger in Japan, Kevin as a teacher in Malaysia and Randall's drama throughout the world. She's also fun and young at heart; I remember her saying that she competed with David on NIntendo in their free time, the joy of being involved in Christy's birthday party and Brent's graduation are some of the fond memories we shared with Myrtle. Myrtle always has a reassuring word. I still have this picture of Christy snuggling up to her with a broken toy or clothes that need repair and she would say "Grandma can fix that". Her parting words to baby Daniel was not a goodbye but a gentle whisper "See you in the morning". That morning has arrived, as Myrtle is reunited with some of her loved ones in glory. Thank you Myrtle that through your character, I have learnt to become a better wife, a better mother and a better friend.

Beautiful service. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. I was only a child when I met your parents here in Mt. Pearl Newfoundland. My parents Ed and Ethel Peddle kept up correspondence with them over the years. Mom passed 2 years ago and Dad Alitalia over 1 year. I do remember your parents coming to our house, though, an they were always highly thought of. Hugs to you all at this time.

It was in November 2005 that Beena introduced us to her in-laws and suggested that they could babysit Suzanna, our daughter who had turned one. David & Myrtle Wiebe would initially come and stay home with Suzy, while we were at work. Eventually they would take Suzy to their home and drop her off in the evening. Suzy became so comfortable with Mrs. & Mr. Wiebe that she began to accompany them on their prayer meetings and errands and affectionately called them - Grandpa David and Grandma Myrtle. Suzy frequently raided grandma Myrtle’s pantry and became a lifelong fan of her cookies. Over the years, all of us became very close to Mrs. Wiebe and a yearly visit to grandma Myrtle during Christmas time became a tradition for our family. Children looked forward to the warm hugs, big smile and delicious cookies that grandma Myrtle would have ready for them. She had the amazing ability to connect with each one of us. She could engage us in conversation that never met with the barriers of differences in our age, culture, values etc. Her unwavering faith in Lord has had a powerful impact on us. Once, while talking about the loss of her son, Roger, she told me, “Our lord has entrusted us with the care of our children. We do not own our children. The ownership belongs to our Lord”. Her ability to surrender herself completely to God’s will was the foundation of her inner peace. And we could experience that peace and serenity when we spent time with her. Rest in peace, Grandma Myrtle. We will miss you dearly.
