Mika Klein
23 de agosto de 1969 - 22 de diciembre de 2021
23 de agosto de 1969 - 22 de diciembre de 2021
Stefyn Mikaela ("Mika") Klein passed away from heart failure at home in Van Nuys, California, on December 22nd. She was 52. Mika was born on August 23rd, 1969, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Henry Frederick Klein and Cecelia Jane Ford Klein, and lived in Los Angeles from age 8. After receiving her B.A. in art history from UCLA in the department where her mother taught, Mika became interested in architecture and went on to receive her M.F.A. in 1996 from the University of Oregon. She subsequently worked for several LA-based architecture firms before assuming the title of Senior Facilities Planner at Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC). Among her myriad responsibilities at Mt. SAC, she directed the planning of capital projects on the campus. She remained at Mt. SAC until her death.
Mika was smart, vivacious, boundlessly energetic, raucously funny, warm, friendly, generous, and full of kindness. She loved her work at Mt. SAC, where she wove together her sense of social and environmental justice with her responsibilities as an architectural planner. When the pandemic hit, she went into high gear, redesigning the school's classrooms and labs so students and faculty could safely return to them. An avid reader, Mika also loved to dance and had a passion for cats, art, music, fashion, costume, and excellent design in general. Athletic as well, her special loves were soccer, hiking, and working out with her trainer. But it was her family, friends, and co-workers on whom she bestowed her greatest love and appreciation. Mika leaves behind a grieving family, including her husband Gregory Joseph Papazian, her parents, her younger sister Sacha Mareka Klein, her nieces Mikaela Siobhan Sanders (Mika's namesake), age 11, and Liadan Mareka Sanders, age 8. She left an indelible impression on everyone she touched, making it all the more difficult to say goodbye. We will forever miss her.

Around August or September of 2021, I had 2 really “important” things I wanted to share with Mika. First, was an idea I had for our annual Halloween costumes for the department (which I had learned, when I was first hired in 2018 that Facilities went all out for). A new show “Monsters at Work” on Disney+ featured a rag-tag group of monsters who worked in, what else, but… Facilities! I thought, this writes itself! We can all be different monsters with a passion for fixing things. The main character reluctantly has to join the department after realizing he can no longer be a scarer as the company now functions off of children’s laughter not screams- and alas he is not funny. He joins the team in the basement begrudgingly to just have a job. The team is goofy, strange and ultimately the best group of monsters in the company and proud of the seemingly humble work they do. This captures our group too- and I thought the idea would tickle Mika if she had not thought of it first. I did not get a change to tell her. Time just passed. The second thing I wanted to tell Mika was that I was naming my daughter-in-womb Michaela. Luckily, I did get to tell her this in person and this did tickle her. We had a nice chat about pronunciation, how we were going to spell it, and the invariable nicknames to follow. I let her know we were planning on “Michael-a” in honor of my husband’s middle name, Michael; which I consider traditional. But, leave it to Mika to provide a teaching moment of “everyone has their idea or truth of traditional.” Touché. My daughter, Michaela Marie, was born 12/13/2021. She will do you proud, Mika, I promise. So far, “KK” (Kay-Kay) and “Kaya” have been her nicknames that our 2-year-old can pronounce. In honor of Mika’s famous genius stream of consciousness, here goes my own reflecting on her…calling my office to help fix the tool rails in her office…her coffee mugs with funny and of-the-moment sayings e.g. “The future if female” (assuming this was hers, could be Nafi’s but either way she would approve)… the Keurig reusable pods with inevitable coffee grounds everywhere…. Her correcting grammar and word usage via email… her pink backpack… bumping into on campus with Patty… her thousands of colored pens… which allowed for her color-coded furniture and space plans... trying to find her the “just right” guest seating for her office where the U-shape desk was just too big for the space… her ginormous monitors… looking at fabric samples… her glasses… her haircuts… her obsession with finding these flat trays at coordinating cart for 11x17 drawings… she gave my first daughter this polka-dot artist smock for feeding in lieu of a bib telling me “because food will get everywhere!”…that I deeply regret now giving to my sister-in-law thinking “I won’t use this” (grr, at least I still have my memory of it)… meow… Scooby… snort… how she created this digital grid paper on her tablet that she could take notes on with pens and have that sketch-feel but tech-advanced… Smartsheet, enough said… Seeing her having fun in the photos of every room on campus that her team documents for our shared drive… she is indispensable to our department, one-of-a-kind is an understatement. After Mika’s Celebration at Life, I did some googling to read a bit more on what was being published about her. Something that popped up was her public Pinterest account she writes that her friends dubbed “Mikapedia.” A peek in to her mind. I decided to follow her, even now, so I can look in from time to time and remind myself of the things she cherished. She reminds me so much of my mother in that she just likes so many things- a wonderful quality of being positive and open. The big and small things bring so much joy- from art to architecture, fauna to flora, jewelry to fashion, coffee to coffee, unicorns to rainbows, glitter, sunshine, travel, EARTH… her “pins” hold it all. I found it comforting that her board with the most pins was “Gifts,” items she was thinking about for others. How fitting. She gave us all so much. I carry around a saying with me often- “Leave the party before the party leaves you.” Not the most poetic, but essentially to know when it is time to go and move on. Mika, you are at the next party and we truly miss you at ours; but I know wherever you are- you will make it fabulous.

Mika.. miss you terribly. U are a kindred soul in design, and outlook, life that is joy & brings joy, laughter, fun. Halloween... oh maybe 13-14 years ago: I wore short black hair (shocked some coworkers), big black wings & monkey ears...a full-blown flying monkey from wiz of Oz (all to elevate fun 4 my kinder-kid). I was the lone adult dressed for Halloween at work (fun, but awkward). You shared-out pix of SoCa festive ness & your perfectly accessorized costume that day. It was a gesture of inclusiveness that solidified our friendship & passion to live life to the fullest & have fun! I flew into SoCa & you kindly picked me up at the airport to head to AVC for mtgs. 1st time in your Mini. The universe had created the Mini .. just for Mika... it was an extension of her being, in every way.. color/ style/ functionality, & driving in a color-emitting hue bubble with her fave tunes was transformational... even the functional act of travel could be Mika-ized. Mini is forever Mika-mobile. & will forever be disappointed driving in a car without being enveloped in color! Lastly, I think of you every week. It’s been years, sadly since we actually hung out together..in same space! Traveling to LA we connected for dinner.. at one of your fav restaurants...Asian mix. You ordered a fav of yours: birds nest. So like you to share the cool & amazing things you’ve discovered ... with a friend! Never had birds nest b4. Totally addicted to them. Introduced them to the family. Can’t duplicate that restaurants recipe..over the top amazing. But... next best thing is TJ’s ...sells them in freezer section. We eat them almost every week ...& I think of you... & how you dragged us across LA to this restaurant ...bc the food is outrageous ...& what an experience it would be to enjoy it together! It’s just birds nests. But every day working with you was a joy & I carry you with me in trying to elevate everything I do, make the world of learning better for everyone, bring joy, & have fun! I’m so lucky to have known you & I miss you, your uplifting & refreshing no BS..the world is messed up but we can do this energy! The memorial rocked! It’s all you. Will do my best to bring a little Mika to everything I do & everyone I meet.

I am thankful to have known Mika, if even only for a short time. I met her about 5 years ago working on my first project at Mt. SAC and from that time on, she has been one of my favorite clients. I always looked forward to any meeting that Mika would be attending, knowing that she injected an energy into any gathering. Her passion for the work, the students, and the College were incredible and infectious. I feel lucky to have known her and to have been able to work with her. She will be so missed.

Dear Mika, though we weren’t close, just working with you on the various projects or having you in meetings just made everything better. You lit up every room with your charming personality and your beautiful smile. It is very true what everyone has said that just meeting you for the first time, felt like we had known each other for uyears. You are truly missed but will never be forgotten.

Mika opened up a door for myself as well as several other students of the architecture department at Mt. SAC to get a feel for working with practicing professionals, specifically, and more important to myself personally, was to work with professional women. Mika was a part of a great team and wanted others to be a part of her team too. Seeing Mika's smile everyday at work was infectious, her style, as colorful as her energy was influential, and to work and play with her in "Puttin' On The Hits" is a memory and experience I keep and will continue to keep in my heart forever. Mika will be missed but not forgotten.

Mikhaela is my regular customer, as well as her husband Greg. i'm thankful to have customers like you!!! You always treated me well before & after i found GOD. After i found GOD, His Holy Spirit sometimes reminds me to pray for you. i was so shocked when i heard that Mikhaela just passed, hopefully she's in heaven with the Lord now. i pray may the Lord strengthens Greg, and all Mikha's family, and all her loved ones. May the Lord gives you all His peace that surpasses all understanding, may the Lord comforts you all, and provides that you all need. You may not understand the reason now, but hopefully the Lord will give you wisdom, revelation & understanding sooner or later behind on what's happening. Just believe that GOD is good, and HE has given the best for Mikhaela.
