Seres queridos

Connecticut native Michael Scricca, beloved father, partner and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly on May 16th, 2024 while vacationing in Italy. He was 73.

Born in Hartford, Mike grew up on Adelaide Street in the city’s largely Italian South End and attended Bulkeley High School. He was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine Scricca and step-mother Rosa Scricca, all of Hartford. He later lived in Wethersfield and Glastonbury.

Mike graduated with a degree in history from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York and the University of Rhode Island, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration. He ran track and cross country in both high school and college and was a devoted fan of University of Connecticut basketball.

Beginning his professional career, he worked for the city of Hartford for nearly 15 years, before making the transition to Schwartz Parkin. Mike retired from the Connecticut Technology Council in 2016 after 18 years as director of membership. A masterful networker, he was generous with connections and guidance related to solving business or career-related issues.

A warm, optimistic and articulate man, Mike was a passionate home gardener with his companion of seven years, Amy Ellison. He was proud of his Italian heritage and enjoyed sharing Italian food and culture with family and friends, often arriving at guests' homes with a special bottle of Balsamic vinegar, Italian red wine or cheese to share with his hosts. Mike also loved cycling, playing bocce, reading, and public speaking, serving as a member of Toastmasters for decades and the officiant at his son Justin’s wedding. In recent years, a frequent source of joy was Facetiming with his two young California-based granddaughters Bailey and Marlowe.

Mike is survived by two sisters, Anna Scricca (Edward Brown) and Rosemary Scricca (Mark Kulig); his former wife Francine Scricca; a daughter, Lauren; a son, Justin (Emily Moffitt); granddaughters Marlowe Scricca and Bailey Scricca and his loving companion, Amy Ellison.

It was with great sadness that I read of Mike's passing in the Fall 2024 edition of "The WICK," Hartwick College's alumni magazine. I was friends with Mike throughout college--September 1969 through graduation in May 1973--where he was an outstanding runner on the cross country and track teams and I was on the lacrosse team and used to run with him to get in shape. After graduation both Mike and I stayed the summer in Oneonta, New York. I was looking for a job in the building trades, and stopped by Briggs Lumber Company to see if anyone had posted help wanted notices on their bulletin board. Talking with one of the Briggs employees, he told me they could use someone for a couple of days. The load had shifted in boxcar filled with their lumber, dumping the entire load onto the rail siding next to their warehouse, and they needed extra help to pick up and restack the lumber into their warehouse. I told Mike, as I knew he was looking for some work too, and we went back together and did the job. Briggs Lumber liked us so much they offered to employ us for the rest of the summer helping customers with their orders, loading their vehicles, etc. Around noon each day the "roach coach" would come with its offering of snacks, soft drinks, and food for lunch. It's prices are quite high, and Mike and I thought we could do better. So we purchased candy bars, sodas, snacks from the local grocery store and brought them to work in competition with the roach coach. Needless to say, the owner of the roach coach wasn't too happy, but he never lowered his prices to be competetive. One day a customer came in to purchase an aluminum storm window and frame to be installed on their elderly relative's house. They asked if Briggs had anyone who could install the window and frame. Mike and I thought, "How hard could that be for two college graduates?" So we volunteered. Well, let me tell you, several hours later, with an old house whose wooden windows/frames were out of square, we finally got it airtight, but it was a good thing that the homeowner was seeing impaired as it wasn't pretty! Some years later--it might have been in 1979 while I was stationed at Fort Devens, MA--I had the occasion to visit Mike at his family's home in Hartford, with his parents' garden of fruit trees and other plants. I remember Mike taking me to the Jai-Alai fronton, one of the few on the East Coast other than Florida. I am not a gambling man, but Mike told me I should bet on "Joey" because he was an American-born player (researching just now, it must have been Joey Cornblit). I did, and won $10! The last time I saw Mike was when I was on a work-related trip to Hartford (in 1996 or 1997?) and we had dinner together, catching up on happenings in our lives. He talked about wanting to take a trip to Italy; I told him, if he did, I'd go with him. Over the past several years, I had tried, unsuccessfully, to reestablish contact with Mike. Sadly, this will never happen now. Mike Scricca was a true Prince among men. Known for his remarkable ability to rally troops, strategize, and approach challenges with unwavering determination, Mike was a natural leader who served. His spirit was one of perseverance and grace, and he had an incredible talent for turning obstacles into opportunities, and he made time to celebrate victories, both big and small. But beyond his sharp mind and leadership qualities, Mike was chivalrous, embodying the qualities of kindness, respect, and honor in every aspect of his life. He helped me with my car troubles over the years - too many times to count. Flat tire? He would know a guy at the tire place - and help facilitate the fix with a ride to and from - and make you feel like you were doing him a favor, giving him an opportunity to serve. He was a friend, a mentor, and a guiding light to many, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty and love. Mike's presence will be deeply missed, but his impact is here - in his loved ones and his community. Ti Amo, Mike. Ciao.

Mike was a caring and giving person who always made you feel special. His ability to relate and have empathy for a friend in need was his unique gift. I will miss walks, gardening, and visits with him. When I walked with him, if there was a piece of paper or can on the ground, he would pick it up and dispose of properly. I told his I will call the town, and ask that they appoint him special maintenance keeper of our town parks . He was that type of guy. We need more Mikes in the world.

Mike and the Scricca family lived next door to us on Adelaide Street in Hartford. Mike was a few years older than me. I will always remember the memories of growing up together. Mike was like a big brother to me. We played baseball behind Burr School, football in the streets, and running with Mike around the block to see who had the best time, he was the fastest of the neighborhood. On Sunday mornings we would both go to St. Augustine Church. Mike had a Hartford Times paper route and I would help deliver the papers for him. Mike always had a good attitude and positive outlook on life. I will miss my lifetime friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the Scricca family. Sincerly Frank Conaci

Mike was an active member in Charter Oak Toastmasters public speaking club which is how I got to know him. He always came in with a great attitude and was encouraging especially for new members. He was a particularly good speech evaluator. He had a lot of passion for the club including bringing new members in and was a great treasurer as well. Lots of positive energy from Mike that will be missed. My condolences to Mike's family. Rest in peace Mike. Chad Fagan
