Michael (Sal) Salsedo

May 15, 1950 - December 19, 2021

Michael G. Salsedo, 71, of Boise, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his son's home in Oakley, CA on December 19, 2021. Mike was born on May 15, 1950, in Hilo, HI, to Hilario Sr. and Dallia Salsedo. He moved from Hawaii to San Francisco at the age of three, and eventually settled in Hayward where he lived most of his life.

After graduating from Hayward High School in 1968, Mike attended Chabot College where he played football and baseball, led the 1969 football team to a conference championship and was voted Chabot College Athlete of the Year in 1970. He then transferred to Chico State University in Chico, CA. and continued his success in both sports where he received the Chico State University Athlete of the Year in 1972. Later to be inducted into both Chabot College and Chico States Hall of Fame for his athletic accomplishments. While attending Chico, he received his single subject secondary teaching credential in Physical Education.

After graduation he moved back to Hayward where he raised his 3 sons Brandon, Mario and Miguel and was an active and involved father and mentor.

In 1990, Mike's adventurous side led him to participate in a coaching exchange program where he taught a weeklong basketball clinic in Hayward's sister city in Funabashi, Japan.

In addition to Mike's teaching career, he kept himself active playing on several extra-curricular softball teams, both fast pitch and slow pitch in Hayward, CA, and Boise, ID. This athletic drive led Mike to play in the Pan America Games in Argentina in the 1990s.

Mike taught Physical Education for the Hayward Unified School District impacting many students' lives. He enjoyed coaching all sports-football, baseball, basketball, and golf and established lifelong relationships with many of his players. After retiring from 37 years of teaching in 2009, Mike moved to Boise, ID where he continued to enjoy playing golf and spending time with new friends. He was a charming, outgoing and caring man who connected with people wherever he went. Throughout his life, he demonstrated strength and resilience in everything he did, whether it be calling a play on the football field, raising his family, lining up a putt, or battling illness.

Mike's caring side led him back to the Chico area when, after the 2018 Paradise Fire, he arranged a toy drive with the residents of Boise. After gathering a U-Haul full of toys, he and his son, Mario, drove the Christmas gifts to the children of the Paradise area.

Mike is survived by his children, Stephanie of Moscow, ID; Mario (Emma); and Miguel (Mayra) as well as his grandchildren Chloe Marie, Anna Rose, Brandon Jr., Marcos, Nico, Leilani, Julian, Jacob, and Mikey. He is preceded in death by his first born son, Brandon, and his parents, Hilario Sr. and Dallia.

A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in both Idaho and California at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael Salsedo Baseball Scholarship or the Michael Salsedo Softball Scholarship at Chico State to help future baseball/softball players. The web address is https://connect.csuchico.edu/makeagift.

I was saddened hear of Mike's passing in my telephone call with Coach Calkins yesterday. Mike & I played on Coach Calkins first football team at Chabot College in 1968. Although Mike & I did not see one another often after our days at Chabot College, we had mutual respect for one another on and off the football field. The last time I saw Mike was at Coach Calkins Birthday and Chabot Football Reunion a few years ago. I will always remember "The Great Mike Salsedo" for his athletic ability in football and baseball, but more importantly as a man of character and dignity. May you RIP my fellow Gladiator!
