Growing up in the 1970s there were no computers or internet... Space itself was a huge topic and every kid wanted to be an astronaut, including me.

Michael George Browning was born on May 26, 1964, in Tampa, Florida — a city that would become the epicenter of a musical revolution he helped spark. He picked up drumsticks at age 13, drawn in by the thunderous power of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Slayer, Mercyful Fate, and Celtic Frost. That early fire never dimmed. It became the engine of a career that would reshape heavy metal. In 1983, Browning co-founded Morbid Angel with guitarist Trey Azagthoth, and together they began forging the raw, aggressive blueprint of what would become Florida death metal — blast beats, technical riffing, and an atmosphere of genuine menace. He served as drummer and vocalist on the band's foundational recording "Abominations of Desolation" in 1986, an album that captured the genre at its most uncompromising. A personal falling-out with Azagthoth led to his departure that same year, and the album was shelved until 1991 — but its influence on the genre was undeniable. After a brief stint with Incubus, Browning founded Nocturnus in 1987, a band that broke new ground by weaving keyboards and science fiction themes into the death metal framework. The vision was uniquely his own, shaped by a childhood spent watching sci-fi films and dreaming of space. The 1990 debut "The Key" is today regarded as one of the most innovative albums in extreme metal history. Over the decades that followed, Browning remained restlessly creative, contributing to Acheron, After Death, Voodoo Gods, and collaborative projects with vocalist Lisa Lombardo. In 2008, he released the solo album "Mike Browning's Inner Workings – Trancemissions." Then in 2013, he reformed his vision under the name Nocturnus AD, releasing the critically acclaimed albums "Paradox" (2019) and "Unicursal" (2024) on Profound Lore Records — proving that his creative fire had never faded. Off stage, Browning was known as one of the most down-to-earth figures in a scene not famous for humility. He collected medieval weapons and Ancient Egyptian artifacts, tinkered with 3D graphic design, and loved muscle cars. He is survived by his daughter, born in 2007. Michael George Browning passed away on July 13, 2026, at the age of 62. He leaves behind a legacy as a founding father of death metal — a drummer, vocalist, and visionary whose work continues to echo across generations of heavy music.

Mike was an innovator, always ahead of the curve in everything he a part of. He was so humble for someone that accomplished so much and was respected within the music community the world over. Mike was a true fixture and staple of the Tampa Metal community for 3 decades. Mike came to still see local bands regularly and would come to shows, sometimes multiple a week. Mike was roughly 20 years older than myself and was heavily influential to me as a musician and a guide post, a walking encyclopedia from a man that was there when it happened. He never badmouthed anyone publicly, even those that had wronged him. I honestly will likely look for Mike at shows for years to come and I now know that familiarity can diminish "aww" and that was the case with Mike, I'll never loose sight again of how much of an innovator Mike truly was and his music will live forever in the eternal ether.
