1 de abril de 1956 - 23 de septiembre de 2020
We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.
Maurice C Urfe was born in Notting Hill, London in 1956, the adopted son of Nicholas (a headmaster of the local comprehensive) and Allison Urfe (air stewardess).
Maurice attended school in Notting Hill, but from an early age travelled with his parents extensively, from which he gained his love of travel and exotic destinations. Maurice was never happier than when alone in a jeep on an unknown road in a strange country, with no map, or destination in mind. For Maurice it was always about the journey, one on the road less travelled.
Maurice devoted his life to the study of the human condition, and the potential of us all to reach greater heights. Following in the footsteps of both his birth and adopted fathers, he was an integral part of The Sibley Foundation, an organization founded to promote the betterment of civilization through advanced immersive techniques.
It was on one such research trip as a young man that he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Kelner of George West, Texas. They married young and spent a lifetime together before she was sadly taken from him in 2012. He loved her from the moment he first saw her until the day he died. Wherever he is now, we can be sure he loves her still.
Maurice and Elizabeth had one son, Antonio, who's life was tragically cut short at the age of 19, but not before becoming a father to twin daughters, Lily and Rose who both survive him and miss him dearly.
Maurice spent the last years of his life living in Paris, immersing himself in French culture, cuisine and community. He was truly loved by all that met him, and was taken too soon.

One can mourn the dead. One cannot mourn what never was.

It feels weird writing for someone you barely know, let alone someone you never talked to. I never got the chance to speak with Maurice, I only knew him through the stories of others, and in a way, through Lily. Still, Lily invited me to this page, and so I feel prompted to write a few words. If knowing Lily might have informed me about Maurice as a character, its that he was very calculated. On one end, this might be taken to mean cunning (which may be taken either positively or negatively, but that isn't my point). However on the other side of things, Maurice seemed to be thoughtful. And that's precisely because I believe he was. In letters to others, he showed much care for Lily, and the choice in his words showed an utmost sincerity, regardless of the recipient he was writing to. It is deeply saddening to hear of his untimely passing. I believe Maurice to be of a rare kind especially in these times. He had the ability to bring people together, regardless of distance. He will be missed. Rest in peace.

I have to admit I didn't know Maurice very well. We started emailing somewhat out of the blue earlier this year, when a friend put us in touch. Right from the beginning I found myself charmed by his mysterious, eccentric view of the world -- even though I could find his stubborn nature frustrating at times. :-) Ultimately though, Maurice always struck me as a man of compassion and thoughtfulness, that hoped -- through whatever strange mechanisms he used -- to help people realize who they were, and actualize the best version of themselves. I'm going to miss seeing his name pop up in my email inbox. RIP, Maurice.
