I met Matt in our freshman year of undergrad. We lived two or three doors down from each other up until our senior year, when everyone in our part of our dorm had to be relocated. During the first week of knowing him, I thought his name was Alex. As he passed by me in the hall -- "Hey Alex! How's it going?" He was too nice to correct me, and I didn't realize my mistake until my roommate pointed it out. Typical Matt. Throughout those years, I would run into Matt regularly in the hall late at night while we were both up studying. He always greeted me with a big smile and asked how I was doing. One time I was coming back from getting some candy from the vending machines, and he informed me that he could eat a whole bag of M&M's in just one gulp. I was amazed, and it was that type of exchange that would really brighten up an otherwise stressful night. I don't think you could be stressed out around Matt even if you tried. One of my fondest memories of undergrad was studying with Matt and our friends Vincent and Hussein late at night in our dorm. It was a windy night and we were sitting right next to a window with a big tree outside. Vincent, Hussein, and I were struggling through a problem set and it didn't look like we would finish. We were frustrated. All of a sudden the branches of the tree hit the window and startled us. Hussein sighed and stated that he wished he were a tree. Vincent looked up and said with conviction "That would be AWFUL!" Matt and I looked at each other and burst out laughing at the whole exchange. Matt had a way of making people feel comfortable and un-self-conscious when they were around him. As someone who used to be very shy, that really stood out to me and I admired him for it. For example, running into people at random would always cause me to panic out of fear that I wouldn't know what to say. But I didn't have to worry about that with Matt. His whole demeanor and personality just put me at ease. I can't really think of many other people that could do that.

Matt was a classmate of mine in grad school. He was always the nicest guy in the room with such a big smile. He was so cheery and genuine that it belied the fact that he was one of the best researchers. Matt made grad school a better place for everyone. May his memory be a blessing.

Matt brought joy to every room he walked into, and I feel lucky to have crossed paths with him in college. The world is poorer without Matt.

It is incredible to me how a friendship, no matter how brief or old, can impact a person. Matt Brennan was a good friend of mine throughout much of high school and we kept in touch here and there afterwards. In high school he was introduced to me by gossip of his genius. He was, at a distance, inspirational and unreachable. But as I got to know Matt as a person through our mutual friend (and his 'brother'), Neil MacAlasdair, I was able to see him as the extremely friendly, kind, modest, and genuine person he was. It was impossible to be around him and not feel welcomed and loved. His charisma drew in all sorts of people and his passion for storytelling and learning made him a constant person of interest to me. His presence in my higher level IB courses made them easier to tolerate and more exciting. I would go to Math society at lunch time to spend more time with him and our friends, and could always count on him for a laugh and good story at the LD. The Matt I got to know as a friend, to travel with to Scotland (among others) after graduating high school, with whom I shared a lot of meals, sushi dinner, movies, conversations, gaming days, an ice storm, and more, is who I will continue to be inspired by and motivated by to keep going and keep loving learning for the rest of my life. Thank you, Matt, for the life you lived. You will be loved and remembered always. Rest in eternal peace.

I was Matthew’s Junior Kindergarten teacher at BSS. He was such a caring, friendly, thoughtful and respectful child at a very young age. He was always happy and smiling and really enjoyed to play with his friends. It is wonderful to hear what a wonderful young man he had become and I feel honoured to of know him. May his memory be eternal and my deepest condolences to his family.

Matthew (Matt) was a legend at UCC - a brilliant student and citizen of both the Prep and Upper Schools. As his dear friend Neil accurately captured today, Matthew was an exceptional person in every way. I will always remember Matthew's love of learning, inquiring mind and kindness in our Grade 1 French class. His Class of 2012 was a special one, indeed! Matthew will remain forever in our hearts. Dear Winnie and Mark, please accept my deepest condolences.
