Souvenirs

On Sunday, November 10, 2019, at 7:24 am, Mary peacefully passed away at the age of 70. She was preceded in death by her daughter, "Baby Nandi" Thigpen, her father, Tom Allen Johnson, her older brother, Fred Collins, her younger brother, Patrick Johnson, her older sister "Baby Elizabeth" Johnson and her younger sister, Jane Marietta Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Willie Thigpen, her daughters, Sonna Ruff and Monifa Giamanco, her grandchildren, Josef Giamanco, Noah Giamanco and Julianna Giamanco, her mother, Inell Johnson, her sister, Ella Johnson, her brothers, Paul Johnson, Bobby Johnson, Michael Johnson, James Johnson and Aaron Johnson plus a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary was born in Los Angeles, California to Tom Allen and Inell Johnson on January 27, 1949. She had a colorful childhood and enjoyed swimming, playing basketball and theater performances. She graduated from Catholic High in Pensacola, Florida and pursued higher education at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana and University of New Orleans. Bachelor's Degree: Sociology/Social Work, Xavier University Master's Degree: Urban and Regional Planning, University of New Orleans Mary was a seasoned professional in the field of Human Resources. Throughout her career, she held many titles. She spent her final managerial years working for the City of Chula Vista as a Senior Personnel Analyst. Mary loved working so much, but with a heavy heart, finally decided in 2007 that she should explore retirement. She wanted to spend more time with her grandchildren and put her feet up a bit. Once retired, she had more time to travel, sleep in, go to movies, window shop and visit friends. That's when she discovered how much fun retirement really was for her! She realized that there were still other ways for her to be useful from home and began seeking out exciting volunteer opportunities. She enjoyed volunteering at her church and for various non-profits in key roles. If someone needed help, she would be first one to get in line. Mary was truly an "Energizer Bunny". She had many hobbies including, but not limited to: gardening, knitting, crocheting, cooking, sewing "angel pillows" and writing poetry. A loving wife, mother, sister, daughter, cousin and friend, Mary will be greatly missed but we can rejoice in knowing that she is now with the Lord -and that's exactly where she wants to be! Stay Tuned for more information on "Mary's Life".

The photo here is of Sonna‘s bridal shower. Every time I was with Mary she was so sweet, so cheerful and always making making sure to tell me how much she loved her son-in-law, my son. As I also love her daughter. We were all so fortunate to have found one another, the Thigpen family and the Ruff family. And now, an important member of the family is gone. She will be missed forever by all of us. R.I.P. Sweet Mary.

I met Mary when I was working for the City of Chula Vista. She always had a smile on her face and ora about her. She would always turn a bad day into a good one just by her presence. I could always go to her to talk to her or pray with her. She is going to really missed. I knew in my heart that something was wrong. Mary was an Anton earth and now she is an angel in heaven. My the Lord be your family Mary during this time of their loss. We will miss your smile and all the love you had for so many ✝️

I have many fond memories of my dear cousin, Mary, which always started and ended with a hug, a kiss, and the words, "I love you!" She loved family and demonstrated her love with action. She was definitely one of the most unselfish human beings who have walked this earth. Rest in Paradise, Mary😇❤️🙏🏽

I met Mary in March of 1983 in 1st grade when Monifa invited me over to play after school. The Thigpens became my friends, and then my family. Soon our parents met and became close friends. My memories of Mary are of her laughing, cooking, giving warm advice and zooming us around town to see movies or visit friends. Mary could cook up a storm! We'd spend summers swimming in the pool and watching scary movies. When Monifa and Sonna were visiting family in the summertimes, Mary would pick my sister and I up and spend the day with us because she missed the energy of the girls around the house. Mary's spirit was great enough to fill the room; her laugh was soulful and her heart was always full. Monifa, Sonna, my sister Alysan and I would watch "Thriller" and do spooky dances and tell stories, all under Mary's watchful eye... trying to keep us out of mischief. Trick-or-treating in the rain, Sunday church, ice cream, laughing... this is who Mary was to my family. Summer 2018 we FINALLY made it back to visit and we watched Thriller with Mary, Monifa, Alysan, Sonna & the kids. She was overjoyed. It felt being like being home and coming full-circle; surreal.. Love always to Mary and the ways she helped shape us all. She has left quite the legacy with her children, grandchildren and the momentum and energy she shared with all who knew her.
