In loving memory of Marsha “Gram” Macdonald Lackey

Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully at Blue Ridge Hospice Facility on January 4th, 2026 at the age of 84. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Born on October 11th, 1941 in Miami, Florida to Eva Cannon Macdonald and Malcolm Macdonald; Marsha was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Ronald Runyan and Robert Macdonald. Marsha “Gram” is survived by her children William McArthur and Pamela Gomez; 3 grandchildren Tyler McArthur, Alexis and Marisa Gomez, as well as extended family members and many friends.

Marsha was known for her unconditional love and kindness to all. She had a forgiving heart, a sharp sense of humor, and a spunky spirit that stayed with her throughout her life. She deeply cared about the wellbeing of others and was naturally nurturing, often putting the needs of those around her before her own. Whether through caregiving, listening, or simply being present, Marsha made people feel valued and safe. Throughout her life, she loved to socialize, read, write, listen to music, sing, dance and watch crime shows with her daughter. She always found joy in conversation and connection. Marsha was an activist who stood up for what she believed in and advocated for others with compassion and courage. Marsha’s warmth, laughter, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her; her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the family and friends she loved so dearly.

She started a playlist of some of her favorite songs while she was in the hospital. You can find it and listen here.

Over the last few years, we utilized a service that would call her and ask questions about her life. We have around 145 audio recordings of her responses, and we wanted to share a couple. The first is about how she spent her summers during childhood, that can be found here. The second is about sayings, mottos and expressions she lived by, that can be found here. We hope these make you smile as much as we did.

My cousin Marsha was the funniest, craziest person in the family, I think. She was often around when I was a kid at the house on 153rd street and we saw her often at her mother's home in Miramar. She was one of the first people to whom I came out, and her response was "So?" She often dropped by at 898 in NMB and Fern Hall and Christopher and I were always happy to see her. She kept up with Mother and always spent time visiting her both in Southwest Ranches and later here when Mother was living with us. Marsha and I had some deep conversations over the years about faith, belief. and what might come next, as well as some conversations that were absolutely insane. She was a very spiritual person who could find room to befriend anyone, whatever they believed. She spent many years in Palm Coast with her daughter, Pam, and I was able to visit her there a time or two and eventually moved, with Pam, to Virgina where I was able to visit her a few times as I was traveling between Maine & South Florida. I will miss her dearly. May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine on her.

I will always love my “Mama Lackey.” She often told me to call her Marsha when I said, “Mrs. Lackey” but in the early days, meeting her for the first time through her daughter, Pam, when we were both 18 years old, my upbringing insisted on giving my elder an honorific. Through the next 37 years of knowing her we’d evolve into family with her calling me her “adopted island daughter” or “chocolate daughter.” She was and will always be my “Mama Lackey…” my “vanilla mother.”We stayed in touch through email and social media. Even through the Internet though, I always felt her warmth and love… and could hear her calm, soulful, soothing voice in my head. Mama Lackey always lifted my esteem by telling me that I was beautiful and how proud she was of me, her fellow Libra, for things that I had accomplished. I cherished her even more when my mother passed away. Now, I grieve the loss of her gentle, loving adoration for me (that I didn’t get from my mother) along with her funny and dirty wit that she’d share through memes and videos of scantily clad men. Like any good mother, she was there as mediator and peacemaker to try to smooth things over when her “daughters” (Pam and I) would have a falling out. Once again, even now on her new journey, she’s found a way to bring us together.🥹 Eternal blessings, love, hugs, and kisses to you, my vanilla mother. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💝🥹😣🥹💝🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

It's crazy, but I guess it's the new world. I never met Marsha, we were friends on Facebook. As she went thru her illnesses I hoped it would never come to this. I graduated from Miami Edison in 1966 and the Edison school was one of our touch points. She was kind, caring and I very much enjoyed her posts. The world has lost a beautiful person. She is missed.

I’m posting this tribute from cousin Diana: My mother, Donna (Maxey) Smith was from March to October older than her cousin, Marsha (Macdonald) Lackey. Growing up, these cousins were best friends - perhaps even sisters, as they lived together for a while. In 1987, while my mother was bedridden in our home, Marsha came up to Kentucky to visit our family. On one particular day, Marsha was chatting with other people in our dining room, and I was chatting with other people on our front porch. Well some of our neighbors were on our walk past our house, I heard one of them comment that she was so happy that Donna was feeling well enough to be sitting up. The thing was, it was not Donna - it was Marsha. Fast forward to Marsha and me finding each other on Facebook. From time to time she would switch her profile picture between a current picture, and a picture from her younger days. Remembering the event from 1987, I asked Marsha if she would keep her current picture as her profile picture - that way I could know how my now deceased mother could possibly look. She was very happy to do that for me. My dear Marsha - I am so happy that you are no longer in pain, and that you and my mother are once again living together - this time in heaven! Like my mother, and all the other family members who have gone before her - Marsha will ALWAYS be loved, and NEVER forgotten! Diana Lynn (Smith) Timke

I met Marsha through a group on Facebook. I left the group but her and I had become friends so we became Facebook friends. I loved her devotion to her believes and how she stood solid on them. She was a strong lady, so many times her health was bad but she didn't let it get her down! I will miss her witty personalities but most of her her kind heart. Cindy Bussell central Illinois
